Half Moon Cay: We had pre-booked the Eco-Lagoon cruise back in October, so we had the tickets for this in our stateroom. Although we had picked a 10:30 excursion, our tickets read meet at 9:45 in the Vista Showroom. Now, I really like how this was done. Three or four different groups met there and, as we checked in, a sticker with a HAL logo and a number were put on our chest. We had number 13. When everyone was gathered, we were directed to the tender and taken to the island where we were met and directed to the shore excursion booth. We stopped off at a stand and bought 2 bottles of water. We also purchased a Half Moon Cay water bottle for $5.95 that would be filled with Bahama Mama or Sex on the Beach drink. Unfortunately, we were not told we had to fill it right away at the bar right inside the gates, so when Ed went to fill them at the bar in the dining area, he had a slight argument with the bartender who thought he wanted a refill. I would suggest that you buy this water bottle at one of the bars and have it filled right away rather than at one of the stands.

Once we checked in the shore excursion booth, we were taken to the ground transport and taken to the lagoon. Our glass bottom boat was ready & waiting, so we all boarded (approximately 14 passengers) and off we went. This was a very nice shore excursion, especially if you are not a “beach” person. Our guide was knowledgeable. He talked about the history of Half Moon Cay, the employees, the hurricanes and of course, the sea life we saw. Before we headed back to the embarkation point, he offered cold water or diet coke to all the passengers. Once we got back, we took the island transport to the dining area and had lunch. We were slightly disappointed that there were no ribs, so we made do with a steak instead. There were various salads, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken and steak. A separate area held desert & drink station where there was water, lemonade and iced tea. After lunch, we took the island transport back to the beach area and explored the shops. The workers in the shops left much to be desired. It was almost as if they didn’t care if you bought or not. They were too busy talking among themselves to pay much attention to anyone asking about an item.

We walked down to the beach and I waded into the chilly water (after all, it was December). Although the beach was lovely, the sand, wherever we walked was full of pebbles. Since this was our first time at HMC, I don’t know if this was the norm or if it was due to the hurricanes.

Again, since we are not beach people, we headed back to the ship and took the opportunity to take some final pictures of the ship and HMC and do most of the packing. We then prepared our tip envelopes (yes, we did tip extra and kept our automatic tips on) since the service we had was excellent! We headed down to dinner in a sad state of mind as this was our last dinner on the ship. After dinner, we again donated to the casino and then went to Karaoke in the Northern Lights lounge. This seemed to be poorly attended, which is a shame as it was a lot of fun and drinks were half-price. Keep an eye on the daily program – there were a number of times when they offered drinks at half price or buy one get one free. We then returned to our cabin and finished packing, put the tags on our luggage and placed them out in the hallway. We had the option of placing out bags out before 1 a.m. or, if we notified the concierge, we could place them in the hallway before 6 a.m. The Red 1 tags allowed us to debark whenever we wanted to after the ship was cleared.

Final Day – Debarkation: We got up at 7:00 a.m. and went to breakfast in the Lido. While we were gone, our cabin steward made up our room for the next passengers. We had told him we would be very careful not to mess anything up for him. After breakfast, we returned to our cabin and watched them offload the luggage into the port building and watched the info channel. There was one passenger they kept paging to come see customs. After they announced debarkation, we decided to get off the ship. There was no line and we were off and collecting our baggage a short time later. We had our passports and our Customs declaration in hand and breezed through customs. The Customs Official only looked at the front part of the form, not the itemization on the back.

After we got outside, we were told the taxis were on the other side of the buses. We caught a cab fairly quickly and headed to Hard Rock Casino and Resort, as our flight was not until 7:15 p.m. and it was only 10:00 a.m. Hard Rock will hold your luggage without charge at the bellboy’s station. We checked our luggage there and tried out the slots – very cold. We then wandered around the hotel and found there was a mall right behind it. Although we did not buy anything there, it helped to pass the time. There was also a Seminole Museum there, but we did not visit it. We had lunch at the “eatery” in the casino and then collected our luggage and headed to the airport. We got to the airport around 1:30 p.m., grabbed a luggage cart and walked around the airport. It was pretty crowded with all the cruise ship passengers and most of the seats were taken, but we found a bench and sat down and read, with occasional visits outside, taking turns, to have a cigarette. At 4:15, we were allowed to check our luggage. While there was a line at the check in counter, we ended up using the check-in outside which had no line and got our boarding passes before the first passengers in the inside line had theirs. We decided not to go through security until 6:30, so we again found some comfortable seats and read. Boarded the plane and landed in Chicago where the temperature was 8 degrees. What a change!! Luckily, our son, who picked us up, brought our winter coats along.

Items I Missed Mentioning:
There was one day when the swells were up to 12 feet and we noticed “relief bags” placed in strategic locations.

On Wednesday evening, the daily program mentioned an 11:00 p.m. activity – Star Gazing with the Navigation Officers. If you have a chance to do this activity, do not miss it. We met on the Forward Sport Deck, all the lights were turned off there and the sky was absolutely beautiful. They handed everyone a star chart for that day and started pointing out the various stars and constellations.

Food was always available. Late night snacks in the Lido were themed and had quite a number of passengers attending. The ice cream bar was open until 1 a.m. as was the pizza/pasta station.

Final Conclusion: This was a very nice ship, albeit a little too big for us. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Food was good and hot, tablemates were wonderful. Crew seemed happy and always smiling. Cabin Steward was excellent, as was our Waiter and Assistant Waiter. Our water glasses were never empty, our wait for food was never too long. We are smokers, but never found this to be a problem. We only smoked in designated areas and found a closed room, right outside the dining room that was a smoking area, which we thought was a very considerate location. The itinerary was good (with the exception of Nassau). The location of our cabin was EXCELLENT! We would definitely said HAL again and would sail on the Westerdam again if the itinerary was to our liking.

What was your cabin steward's name? We will be in 7053 in 2 weeks.

How were the decorations for Christmas? (I know they will all be taken down by Jan 9)

Forgot to ask. Wasn't the suite buffet at noon on the last sea day? If you went - how was it?

That would be too much eating for us - having the suite buffet at noon and the dessert extravaganza at 2:30 on the last sea day.

KK, Are you doing the Western or Eastern Caribbean? We will be doing the Western Carribean and will have cabin 7051 in just 11 weeks.

Our cabin steward's name was Prayitno. He is a new father and very proud of his son - ask him to show you a picture.

The Christmas decorations were lovely. Lots of trees, garlands, lighted decorations on the outside of the ship. The flowers arrangement in our cabin was red & white with Christmas ornaments.

We did not go to the suite buffet, but were told by Roberta that it was very nice.

Since Kris did such a thorough job, I feel as if I don't have to post a review, but I'll just add a few observations:

- The Neptune Lounge is fantastic, a wonderful perk for booking a suite. There is no way in h*ll that I'll get my mom onto a HAL ship in the future unless we book suites now that she has seen the Neptune. ;) Having a mid-ship location just across from the lounge was a definite plus also.
- Our family and friends group had four suites in a row, and our wonderful steward, Abie, had the balcony partitions opened very soon after we boarded. It's nice that the front section of the partition opens completely on these balconies, so you don't have to step over part of the frame when you go to the next balcony. I'm guessing that we had a 70 or 80 foot long stretch of balcony.
- If you walked down the port-side hallway on deck 7 and saw the doors decorated with the red velvet ribbons and bows, that was us. Abie was very happy to inherit our decorations when we disembarked - he said he was going to decorate his cabin. :)
- We received a nice surprise gift, a hardcover book celebrating the Westerdam's inaugural, on our last night out.
- We took part in fewer activities this time than we have on previous cruises. I think we were just stressed out and in need of lots of sleep and mindless sunbathing. We went to one show and donated to the casino only once.
- We had the orange cabana on Half Moon Cay and it was as wonderful as ever. Service was another story. The cabana steward, Ryan, never got me an answer on why we had only 2 floating mats for the party of four. At 11 am, he announced that the buffet lunch was opening and we could get in line. No offer to help bring food back, as our attendant Alex had last year. I realize that butler service is extra, but the servers at the buffet asked why our attendant hadn't helped get food, so apparently that's still a typical part of the service. Last year, we tipped VERY generously at HMC. This year, we left a modest tip - still more than the service warranted - tucked under the fruit plate since Ryan never came back to say good-bye or help pack up. This truly was the only real disappointment in service on the Westerdam. I mention it because it was an anomaly, not because it ruined our cruise.
- The Westerdam was decorated beautifully for Christmas. There must have been 20 trees throughout the ship. I was happy to see decorators setting them up as we boarded on the 12th. It was like having a holiday cruise without the high prices and hundreds of kids. :D

Happy cruising,
Susan

Hello:
We are the couple that sat with you and your mom at the Suite luncheon at the Crow's Nest. At the time I did not know that we had been corresponding a bit on the CC board....did not put 2 and 2 together until I got off the ship! We enjoyed your family (gave your dad the AFLAC duck) and had good conversation with them and you. We enjoyed the cruise and now are freezing.....guess we will have to warm ourselves up with the memories of the warm days.

We had the green cabana on HMC and had excellent service from the cabana guy...can't remember his name but he brought us everything...lunch, floats, continuous offers of drinks and ice teas. He was never far away and always looked after us. He even cleaned off our table after eating and wiped it off whenever we went in for a swim. So sorry to hear that your service was lacking.

Perhaps we will meet up again. Enjoy your cruise through the Panama Canal in the Spring!

Hi Margaret!

So funny that you should post this afternoon. I'm up in PA visiting with my family and probably an hour or so before you wrote your message, my mom came across your card in her purse. That got my dad and I giggling about the AFLAC duck you gave him - he loves it. We enjoyed meeting you and Bob very much as well, and I'm sorry that we didn't put two and two together while we were chatting at the luncheon. It'd be great if we ended up on the same cruise again.

And speaking of next cruises - I think HAL's marketing dept. is getting pretty savvy. As soon as I got off Westerdam, I had an email announcing Oosterdam's deployment on Mexico cruises next year. The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2005 have suite prices almost as good as ours this year. Hmmm........ ;)

Happy cruising,
Susan

Sailing on the Westerdam March 21 for the Eastern Caribbean. Traveling to Nassau, St. Maarten, Tortola & Half Moon Cay.
You mentioned Naasau, what would you do different there? Problems? Any suggestions? Have been to Grand Bahamas and several other locales in Bahamas, Found snorkeling to be nice! Never traveled to Naasau. Also have enjoyed Half Moon Cay. Any body have suggestions/ like or dislikes for: St. Maarten or Tortola. Really looking forward to just being pampered and in caribbean climate! From Missouri and really getting a break here on our weather! Trying to enjoy while we can. Sailing from Fort Lauderdale, arriving early and looking for fun things to do close to port. Have always found best lodging$ and info such as photos on internet. Any suggestions or comments on Fort Lauderdale port lodging? Appreciate review!

Many enjoyable cruises to all,

Great review, Kris! It was a fun week, wasn't it? I thought I'd just add a few of my experiences to your already comprehensive list.

In Nassau, we also took an early morning carriage ride to get the feel of it. Then we took a tour from Vincent at Festival Place. We had a very nice informative look at the city , Fort Charlotte, and the amazing Atlantis resort. We grabbed a cappuccino, did some quick shopping, and headed back to the ship just in time for sailaway.
In Sint Maarten, we took a local taxi tour of the island with stops at Orient Beach and Marigot and got back in the nick of time for our America's Cup excursion. What a complete and total blast that was! I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
In Tortola, we were picked up shipside and ferried to Virgin Gorda and the Baths--a must-see for anyone willing to scramble through some incredible boulders to a gorgeous beach. We were returned to the ship where my DH had lunch while I disembarked to do some serious shopping. We met up later in the middle of a crosswalk, shopped some more and had drinks and a snack for me (no lunch!) at Pussers.
At Half Moon we rode horses up and down a trail and into the ocean-a remarkable experience- and enjoyed the beach and rather chilly water.
Our sea days were spent relaxing. We enjoyed the shows we saw. I don't find many comedians funny so we skipped that night and one of the others, I think. We didn't use the casino either, or the pools. We met lots of great people, won the scavenger hunt, learned about the stars with Kris and the navigators, watched the talent contest, and had a wonderful time. Beautiful ship and decorations, good food, great service, the best fellow passengers ever, and we're looking forward to next time!
