Merry Christmas to everyone, and Best Wishes for a peaceful and healthy New Year.

This is a quickie review - too many loads of wash, too many fresh pounds, too much to drink, and too little sleep! Remember, it's only one opinion.

The Ryndam fully lived up to expectations - she's gorgeous. And fully digitized! Our "lowest" inside cabin had the new lovely bedding and robes and was large and convenient as always on dam ships.

Many families were celebrating Christmas, so there was a variety of age groups, and 175 of the best behaved children (aged 17 and under) I've ever seen. They were delightful, and extremely quiet, except for a bit of happy noise on Christmas Eve, which was fun to watch. Their participation in the Club HAL talent show was evidence of a successful kids' program. Santa arrived Christmas morning from the rooftop (got a great photo of him climbing down the ladder onto the Sports Deck (teehee). He was greeted by elves and many children, and distributed gifts in the Vermeer Lounge for all.

Re the much-discussed tipping policy. I was told by several staff members, the front desk, and also the cruise director that if you choose to leave the automatic tipping policy in effect, you may give something over and above their share to anyone you wish, and they DO NOT have to share this with anyone. The staff says they like the new policy because it's fair and equal. The service and attitude of each and every person on board was outstanding. As good or better than any of the 15 or more cruises we've been on.

. Pinnacle was lovely, as expected. All the food was great. Better than the last two HAL ships the two previous years. Our family particularly enjoyed the creative and intense seasonings used by this outstanding chef. He even shared his basic chilled fruit soup recipe. Yum. Entertainment was good. Excellent cast with colorful production numbers. Especially enjoyed Dr. Justin Miller's performances (classical as well as every other kind of guitar and unusual stringed instruments). The officers and entire cruise staff presented several lovely Christmas programs during the cruise.

When the head didn't flush after arriving in the first port, we were told our deck was shut down so that a problem could be attended to. By 3 p.m. all was well. The only other problem was late delivery of one piece of luggage, due to the purple tag being torn off after embarkation. It created a bit of anxiety since it was my husband's only piece of luggage - the anxiety was on my part, he knew all along it would appear. It was brought to the Front Desk about 6 p.m. and they already given him a shaving kit for freshening up before dinner. Was told that Karaoke was not run efficiently, but can't think of any other area that needs improvement.

Enjoyed being with Escrowgal and her family. Maybe she'll post her own review.

Highly recommend a holiday cruise with HAL. It was special.

Will check the CC board tomorrow in case anyone has a specific question.

Bev

P.S. Just read some posts regarding embarkation nightmares, and would like to say ours was a snap! Arrived in Holiday Inn van and was allowed to drive onto the pier where porters took our luggage. Had all docs in hand, and boarded in time to have a leisurely lunch and unpack. Perhaps arriving at 11:15 was a good idea.

Welcome back; sounds like a good time.

Please, if you have the chance, elaborate on Justin Miller's performance(s?). How many? Did he give any lectures? He did a lecture series on my '01 trans-Atlantic; I could sit and listen to him for weeks. His knowledge of the backround on songs, composers, musicians is phenominal.

Who was playing in the Piano Bar? Comments on how that venue went?

Thanks.

Hello Ruth,

Justin Miller did a running commentary/lecture in between selections. Marvelous teacher type and very likeable. He's a newlywed of 2 weeks! He performed everything including the 4 B's. (Beethoven, Bach, and Brahms) The fourth was the Beatles! What a talent. His classical guitar was unusual - nylon strings, I believe, very odd looking. He brought a mandolin type instrument also. He was a huge success.

He was a solo performer one evening. Then the last evening he was featured performer (a fun juggler preceeded him).

We missed the third performance but our daughter went. It was impromptu, with the 6 piece band backing him up, and was on a port day. If we had known ahead of time, we would have stayed on the ship.

Hope this is what you wanted to know.

Bev

Oops, forgot to tell you Dan Bolton was in the Piano Bar. We enjoyed the music trivia several times and our team won a "dam hat" due to daughter's brilliance. ;-)

grandma bev. so glad you had a great Christmas cruise on the Ryndam. Reading it brought back some great memories of just about 6 weeks ago when we were on the Ryndam. Looking back I can honestly say it was by far the best cruise we have ever been on. My DH is working in San Diego and makes several trips to the aiport each trip he saw the Ryndam in port today. When I spoke to him this evening he was calling it "His Ryndam"
I agree with you that I felt the staff did not have a problem with the new tipping policy. I thought the staff was great.
How wonderful that they had Santa arrive I bet that was really a treat for the kids.
It sounds like cruising over Christmas is really special:)

Thanks so much for sharing your review with us.

Thanks so much for sharing! Definitely brought back fond memories of a great week of which I am still compiling photos. It will be quite the collection for those of you waiting, though! .... ;)

Thanks for the reply, Bev; it's exasctly the type of info I was looking for.

Justin must have performed a new show. He was on the Rotterdam when I cruised last summer; what you described I've never seen.
He gives a wonderful performance. If you like music and ever get a chance do go to his lectures. Chock full of delightful tidbits.

Ruth, do you happen to know a website for Justin Miller? Google didn't supply one and I'd like to know more about him. Thanks. Bev

Thank you for the great review. I am booked on February 14 and was becoming worried because of some not-so-positive reviews. I am glad that you gave some insight into the tipping policy as I wasn't sure what to do on my cruise. I am also booked in an inside cabin and am happy to hear that they have also been upgraded. Can't wait until Valentine's Day.

Last time I checked (a few days ago) he hadn't updated his story area in quite a while. If you don't know them the two stories there are interesting.

I'm just back from my maiden voyage on the Vendaam and I'm kicking myself for not getting the chilled fruit soup recipes. Pear, blueberry, mixed berry -- they were wonderful. Grandma Bev, would you mind sharing?

Jeez - I thought I was like Sleeping Beauty and had been asleep for so long that I missed Christmas 2005. :D
