My sweetie and I will be cruising on a special occasion, and we'd prefer a cozy table for 2 whenever possible. Will this be possible each time, or will it be luck of the draw?

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

As You Wish Dining simply means that you get to choose where you want to eat.

Under this program there is the fixed dining at 5:45 and 8 PM on the upper level of the dining room.

Then there is the Open Seating on the lower level of the dining room -- open from 5:15 - 9 PM. Here you can choose any time you wish to dine -- just show up or make reservations from 5:15 - 6:15 and 7:30 - 9 PM. The time from 6:15 - 7:30 -- no reservations. There are few tables of two that are cosy here.

Then there is the Lido for dinner -- buffet style -- from 5:30 - 8 PM -- has nearly all the same items as the main dining room.

And you have the specialty restaurants -- Pinnacle Grill on all ships, Canaletto on some ships and Tamarind on the Eurodam.

And you can also order dinner into the cabin -- place order within a half hour of the dining room opening.

Those are the choices for As You Wish Dining.

What choice did your TA give you -- fixed or open seating?

You can always get a table for two in the MDR Open seating if:
1) you show up at slack times, say before 5:45 or around 7:30, or
2) you make a reservation in the morning, or
3) you are willing to wait

Don't know what you consider cozy however please consider that the MDR is busy and not as intimate as perhaps a restuarant you amy go to for a special occasion.....but it's still fabulous!

You can make reservations in the MDR for a table for 2 starting at 8 AM each morning for that evening. On our cruise on the Eurodam on 12/05/2009 we found a table/area we liked and HAL reservations allowed us to reserve the same table for three nights in a row.

Forgot to mention: Dial "88" from any house phone or cabin phone to make dinner reservations

On the Eurodam we noticed that almost all of the 2-tops are adjacent to other tables and the occupants were usually talking among the various tables. We never did figure out why get a table for two and then talk with other tables anyway. Those that aren't adjacent to other tables seem to be along busy walkways and next to the busy waiter stations. Neither local is what we consider "cozy".

Please clarify something for us.
We have (the beloved) Fixed Dining at 8pm. However, in one port, we won't get back to the ship in time for an 8pm dinner. Will there be anywhere on board for us to eat at 9:00?
The Lido buffet closes at 8pm.
And if we have Fixed Dining at 8pm, I assume we are not allowed to suddenly show up at Open Dining at 9:00pm (or any old time).
I had thought we might have room service, but I see here that you're saying one has to "place order within a half hour of the dining room opening", and we'll be on shore somewhere and won't be able to do that.
So, will there be nowhere we can eat at 9:00ish on board?
Does it mean we have to find something on shore?

If you are on a HAL tour it's possible that the Lido will be kept open, and serving, until shortly after your tour returns. That's what they do at lunch.
Double check the hours of operation before you assume you have to order from room service. Too many times I've had a late lunchtime burger I didn't want because I didn't even check that the main line was still in operation.

Thanks. I'll write it in my notes right now to check both lunch and dinner times at the Lido for days when we'll be returning from shore excursions.
