What is your favorite red wine?

My Fiance and I are BIG red wine drinkers and have tried many recomended from the local liquor store. I have tried to make a trip to a specialty wine store in the USA when I am there on the weekends but never seem to be able to as the hours I am there they are normally closed. I haven't had much luck in Canada, I once went to a specialty store... (no kidding) asked for a recomendation on a Red Zinfandel She brought me a blush, I said NO RED, she said that was... and continued to tell me I didn't know what I was talking about that that IS red and there is not such thing as I was asking for! I know I am very young but I do know my WINE, and do have a taste for a nice bottle!

So in saying that, what is your fav... we are wanting to get stocked up on some nice bottles while we have money before paying for our wedding.

My DH and I got on a red wine kick last year when we went on a lo-carb diet. Found a good Merlot to be very smooth and drinkable. Especially like Blackstone, a California wine. But for cheap and remarkably smooth for the price try a nice little Merlot from Australia - Yellow Tail. Marilyn

I just went wild last week at Apple Jacks. (Liquor outlet). I ended up with 3 cases of wine. So far, they have all been wonderful. I stay towards Shiraz and Cabernet Savignon. Rosemont Vineyards out of Southern Australia has a great Shiraz. In fact almost any wine from Chile or Australia are very good. The other thing you need to remember is that wine involves the taste buds and everyone has different tastes. The best suggestion I have for you to try different wines. When you find something you like, stick with it.

Oh ya, we LOVE Red Z and Shiraz, and seriously have tried almost every bottle! From $10-60!! Chianti (sp) is nice as well.

Actually, the clerk was at least partially right, there are only red and white wines. Those with a pinkish tinge (right thru the deep rose of Tavel) are classed as red while the beige/tan ones are called white.

If you really like Zins, though, I'd suggest you try some Sangiovese - especially the less expensive ones (the pricier kind are pretending to be Cabernets or Chianti Riservas). Harder to find is Carignane (a grape originally from the Rhone valley) but it makes a delightful round, full, but light red - Beaujolais-like without the floweryness.

The Syrah/Shiraz wines from warmer areas of New South Wales or Central California can be mind-blowing with their great big nose and taste.

Finally, there's Pinot Noir - shy, but elegant, my favorite grape. Those from Oregon state tend to be excellent, but there are very nice ones from California's Anderson Valley in Mendocino county - if you can find them.

obCruising: Of course, few, if any of these will show up on a HAL wine list.

If you like a red wine have you tried a Shiraz from South Australia. Either a Penfolds or Henscheke's Hill of Grace. Australia's most expensive wine is Penfold's Grand Hermitage but there are cheaper bottles of Shiraz from Penfolds on the market.

Coonawarra is the best area in Australia for Shiraz and that is in South Australia.

The best Pinot Noir in Australia comes from the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula here in Victoria. It is grown in a cool climate area just like Burgandy in France.

Enjoy, there is nothing like a good bottle of wine.

-daveShe was handing me the blush and telling that was the RED and there was no such thing as a bottle of RED the same colour of a Shiraz, merlot, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions I will take a look at the stores this weekend. I do like the SOuth Africa wines, and of course Australian. I have a good list to bring with me to the store now...

Two red wines that I enjoy and get at our LCBO by the case are Domaine de Saint Augustin 1999 and Chateau de La Beauze (Bordeaux Superieur).
Both wines are about $12.00 a bottle (fair price) and easy to enjoy. I have also picked them up in Vancouver. Happy Sailings...Leslie Swiger:)

My favorite red lately is a Meritage from Hann of California (less than $20/bottle). I also love the Californian Franchescian (sorry for the spelling) Cabernet, just a bit over $20. From Australia, I'm a Black Opal or Rosemont Shiraz fan, about $12/bottle. I wish I could get some of my favorites on the HAL list!

Our favorite table wine is Francis Coppola's (Niebaum-Coppola) Black label Claret. It sells for around $15. It is very good with food (label lists it as a Cabernet Sauvignon). We like the Niebaum-Coppola wines alot, they are Napa Valley, CA wines. You should be able to get them anywhere in the States.

For Zinfandels we like the St. Francis (Sonoma CA) Zin as a table wine. It's around $15 as well.

For special occasions (hardly ever happens) we like Rubicon by Niebaum-Coppola. We like the Sterling wines as well. Justin, Frog's Leap also very good. All these are very pricey.

We will bring all our wines for the cruise. I expect to pay the corking charge. But then we get to drink wines we really like.:)

Blackstone is my favorite merlot. Very soft in flavor with no bite at the end. I saw a sign the other day in a liquor store that Blackstone merlot was chosen the best red wine under $15 in this country. It costs about $10. Smoking Loon also makes a good merlot with a slightly smoky overtone, around $8 per bottle.

When I feel like a white wine, Santa Margherita is an excellent pinot grigio, more expensive than the very good Ecco Domani pinot grigio and Cavit pinot grigio.

I think DH ordered wine for our stateroom on the package order form. That's nice. Since we will be eating late, it's nice to relax on the verandah in the evening and sip a glass of wine while we watch the sunset.

Hello CanadianMAG,
We had a wonderful red wine recently--a merlot by Teatown Cellars out of Napa Valley. It was suprisingly full and had a good dry finish. I had never heard of Teatown Cellars before and look forward to becoming better acquainted with them.:p

Cheers to your upcoming cruise!!
