I've submitted this to the reviews section, but I figured that you all would enjoy reading it sooner.

If you have any questions, ask away.

Cheers,

Deb

~~~~~
First I would just like to note that this was my second cruise (my first was last May on the Statendam to Alaska) and it was my sister's first cruise. I travel as frequently as possible for both business and pleasure. The opinions below are my (and my sister's) opnions only, so take it for what it's worth. If you've read other cruiser's reviews on this site, you can see how different people on the same cruise can have completely different experiences. I always travel with a good attitude, so that might colour my views. =)
OVERALL
We were on the February 6th sailing out of Ft. Lauderdale. What a fantastic cruise! The only surley and not helpful crew members I met worked in the Signature shops (on the cuisewear side, not the jewellery side). Everyone had a smile and was more than willing to help you!
CABIN
We had a small problem with the air conditioning not working in our cabin on the second day onboard, but a post-it note left for our cabin stewards had it up and working by the time we returned that day!
The cabin itself was spacious, with more than ample room for the clothes we brought too much of and all of our other paraphilnilia! I was impressed that the room safe was big enough to fit my sisters laptop in it, and it's not a small one!
The room was always clean, we always had ice and the bathroom was restocked frequently! Our stewards were like magical elves that we hardly ever saw. Well done!
We loved having a balcony to eat our breakfast on in the morning and listen to the sound of the ocean as we relaxed before bed. The VE's overlook the lifeboats, but they didn't impede our view at all.
ENTERTAINMENT
We went to one production show, which was well done, and to LiveWire - a Modern Celtic husband and wife team who were really great. No complaints there.
I played Bingo whenever I had the chance, never won, but had a great time and made some new friends! There was Karaoke in the Queens lounge one night that was really well attended! There were some great (and not so great, but fun) singers. Several (including me ) got to participate in the "Eurodam Idol Contest" the following afternoon. What a hoot! It was fun (and a bit nerve wracking) to sing a bit (DJ Dave still owes me a Weng Weng for cutting me off too early, LOL) on the main stage.
The best entertainment we found though was at the Ocean Bar every evening. Lawrence would bring us our drinks without asking and we would settle in for the cool strains of The Neptunes (a jazz trio of Bass, Drums and Piano). They played all the great standards that got the couples all dancing. You see, I'm 36 and I have yet to meet anyone of my generation who can dance as well and as nicely as the "older" couples that were cutting up the dance floor in the Ocean Bar. They were a joy to watch and it was a fantastic way to end the day.
Neither my sister nor I smoke, so we avoided the casino and sports bar as much as we could. This was the only place the smoke bothered me. No big deal though, as there were plenty of other places to be.
We never quite made it to the Nothern Lights Dance Club, although we meant to. Same with the cullinary demonstrations. We did go to see two of the movies playing in the theatre on board (Surrogates and Julie & Julia), nice room, comfortable seats and we brought our own drinks =)
FOOD
We ate everywhere, so be prepaired...
Room Service
We ordered breakfast every day (so we could eat it on our Veranda). It was never right on, but we always had what we ordered, plus... so no complaints here. We usually kept the extra fruit bowls in the fridge for an afternoon snack!
Cantallo
We ate here on the first night on the ship. It was okay. My Veal was done perfectly, but my sisters chicken marsalas (or whatever) was bland. Service was great though.
Tamarind ($15pp)
We like it so much we ate there twice! Absolute perfection from your first shrimp cracker to the amazing desserts. Try the Tamarind Chocolate (it's a chocolate moose infused with chili peppers), its so freaking good - I'm still dreaming of it. The Wasabi encrusted Beef is the standard by which I will judge every other piece of beef that I eat. It was so tender that I could have actually cut it with my spoon. I could have eaten here every night!
Rembrandt Dining Room
We only ate here once, but the food was excellent, hot and our servers were nice. We ate with two couples, and got along well.
Pinnacle
Tamarind ruined me for any steak, but the food (and my fillet) was very very good. Especially the desserts =) My sister had the Creme Brule trio (coffee, vanilla & chocolate) and I have the "volcano" cake. So, SOOOOOOOO very good (both of them). The only complaint was that the service was a little slow, but we put that down to there being a large party of over 15 - not a big deal, we weren't going anywhere =)
OTHER
The anchor thing. I am going to have to take the blame for this. So sorry to all the passengers that I inconvienced. You see... I didn't want to leave Half Moon Cay, so I asked the Sea God Neptune to see what he could do.
First he brought the wind up, which brought the swells. Causing the last tender of the day (that I had been place on, kicking and screaming (jk)), to be unable to dock. That worked for me, take me back to the island!
The captain then decided to move the Eurodam so that it would act as a breakwall so we could deback the tender, BOOO I said. After chasing the Eurodam for the better part of an hour, we finally got on board, close to 5:30 pm.
About an hour later the captain came on (everywhere, even in the staterooms) and let us know that they were having trouble with the hydralics for the anchor and were attempting to fix it so that we would be on our way. Well neptun was able to weak his havoc until 10:30pm, when his (and mine) evil plan was foiled by the Captain, who decided (with permission from the relevant authorities I assume) to drop the anchor and about 450 ft of heavy chain and pick it up on the next cruise.
So, um, Sorry about that ;-)
Great review. I was already excited and now I'm sitting here wondering how I'll make it through the next 6 days till we leave.
Thanks for your review. We were suppose to be on this cruise but needed to cancel. Haven't been on the Eurodam yet but hope to soon.
How were your ports other than HMC? Sounds like it was quite a little adventure trying to get back to the ship on the tender - I'm sure you will always remember it.
Ports...
Grand Turk - We did the Reef & Ray. It was my first time snorkelling in the ocean (5 years ago you couldn't get me in the water for fear of jellyfish and sharks, I'm mostly better now...). It was fun and a great first snorkelling experience. Afterwards we went to the beach and met Freckles, a female stingray. I got to "hold" her and she gave me a "kiss", it was a bit fishy, the kiss - but she was so soft and serene.
Margaritaville's food was overpriced and undercooked, but the Margarita's were good. We spent the rest of the time on the beach and in the water. It was a good day.
San Juan - If my sister asks, I LOVED the jungle ziplining. All I can say is... I never have to do it again. It was well run with good guides and perfectly safe. Never Again. No offence to the guides.
The city itself is beautiful; when we get the chance to come back again we would do our own city tour of old San Juan ourselves. There just wasn't enough time to see a lot of the city before dark. We did some shopping, but the stores were closing at 6pm.
We had dinner at a restaurant just across from the docks and hit the cold stone ice cream place on the way back.
St. Thomas - *sigh* I want to live here. Preferaby on "Island Girl", we booked a half day tour on her (not through HAL) and had the perfect day of sailing and snorkelling. The snorkelling was WAY better here! We had tonnes of fish, small sting rays (far away at the bottom) and TURTLES! Just Awesome!
Doing this in the morning left us the afternoon for shopping. And we shopped and lunched and shopped, before taking a taxi back to the pier. The perfect day.
Half Moon Cay - We had a Cabana, just my sister and I. We would do that again in a heartbeat! We had #14 (Red) is was partially shadded all day and the water was refreshingly cool. We didn't go to the BBQ because the snacks provided with the Cabana were more than enough (Veggies & Dip, Fruit & Chips w/ Salsa, Guac & Sour Cream)
I would do the same itinerary again, just to see different aspects of the islands we visited!
Hope this was helpful!
Cheers,
Deb
[B]Great review. Thanks for going to all the effort to post for us.
DH and I were on your cruise b-to-b and watched from our portside veranda as your tender attempted to come alongside. We were just about right above you - midship. When the tender left and the ship moved, we really got concerned but knew at all times, safety was paramount.
Then we saw the Cliipper leave. :eek:
We were very happy when we saw all of you safely come back aboard.
There was quite a chop and wind that seemed to have come up very quickly.
Our first week on Eurodam, we had a great day at the beach at HMC but Eurodam was the only ship. When we learned we were sharing with ZUDM the second week, we chose to stay aboard for the day and were happy we did.
All is well that ends well. :)
It was a great cruise.
I enjoyed your review lots and lots.
May you be rewarded with many carefree days in the red cabana on Half Moon and on the water in St. Thomas.
About causing that trouble with the anchor though.....you better cut that out:D
callmedeb, great review. We were on that cruise and it was a wonderful week despite the anchor problems. It would have been great to be stuck there another day as the Disney Magic was on their private island because of high winds.
Hi Deb:
You're young and I know you and your sister will have many more very pleasurable cruises. A smile, a laugh and a good attitude helps not only you, but the people around you, enjoy the day.
On a =X= TA a few years ago, there was an employee who met the elevator in front of the buffet every morning with the biggest smile and best attitude ever. No one could go into breakfast after meeting him with a sour look on his face. Both DW and I thought he was the one person who made the trip most memorable.
I was on the Grand Princess in San Juan the same day as Eurodam that week. Got a great shot from El Morro of the Eurodam's arrival. Have been to SJ 6 or 7 times; this is the first time we have seen a ship pass by when we were at the fort. Very nice, DH was thrilled.
We were on this cruise also and enjoyed it . We were on the tender probably just before yours and the wind came up very fast. We did have vibration problems the entire cruise in our room on the 8th deck and don't know what caused this. It was a pretty rough ride back to Fort Lauderdale after the anchor incident and our entire room vibrated all night. We were fortunate that we did not have airline reservations - so the late arrival only delayed our plans to visit Miami (we were driving). The Captain and crew did everything they could to keep everyone informed and help out in any way they could.
In Grand Turk we rented a golf cart for the day and drove all over the island. We went out to the lighthouse and it was very enjoyable with beautiful sights.
In Puerto Rico we rode Segways. This was great fun and our guide was wonderful.
In St. Thomas we took the 99 Steps tour which was good. This let us see the island before spending the rest of the day shopping.
I love Half Moon Cay - but love it much more when there is only one ship on the island. It was quite crowded with two ships being there.
Deb, thanks for the review.
We boarded the Eurodam after you, so thanks to your anchor shenanigans our embarkation was delayed till 3 pm. :eek: But I think the delay gave a few more people the chance to get to the ship on time after a week of travel nightmares. :) I spoke to someone in the terminal while waiting to board and he landed in Ft. Lauderdale at 3pm!
How did they handle having everyone onboard much later than usuaul? Did they ask people to leave their cabins and wait in public areas? The ship arrived at 12:30 pm and when boarding started around 3 pm everyone was able to go to their cabins right away. They turned the ship around very quickly and we sailed around 7 pm.
Since we anticipated having lunch onboard we had no food left at our friend's house and with two new travel refugees arriving at 4 am in Miami, we had to head out for lunch. We went to Lester's, our usual diner, only to discover that they had no electricity in the area but they were still serving food. So while you were eating our lunch in the Lido, we were eating whatever wasn't made using electricity in the dark in a diner! :mad: But nothing was going to get us down and a few hours later we were waiting to board teh ship fr a great cruise. :D
They took excellent care of us on Eurodam while waiting to arrive in FLL and disembark. We were permitted to stay in our cabins same as all disembarkation days. They extended breakfast hours to later than the usual early shut down on disembark day and then served a full lunch in Lido. They had the same, wonderful, full provided Lido lunch. I never inquired so don't know but suspect the dining room was open for lunch as well.
We were treated amazing while waiting to arrive and all the ship's crew did everything you can imagine to assist and make us as happy and comfortable as possible. We were kept informed with accurate and timely info. I can think of nothing more they could have done.
And on top of all that, Hotel Manager, Stan Kuppens, actually came and stood at the gangway as we all left. There are few who would have stood there and been available for anyone who absolutely felt they needed to say something to him other than Thank you and Gulang, Gulang.
Absolutely! Even with the size of the ship it's very easy to meet people (if you want to) and to participate in everything (or not)!
My sister and I did quite a few things separately (she went to the gym, I went to the spa, I went to bingo, she went to the gym...) and never once did I feel alone.
I think you would really enjoy it! She's a great ship with a wonderful crew!
Sorry about that ;). My sister and I were the last passsengers through customs (at 2:30 pm) so we got to see your long line waiting to board. My favourite were the two boys dressed in the hot pink tropical vegas showgirl attire. It made me want to get back on the boat, what a fun week you must of had! :D
Dining in the dark? Isn't there an upscale restaurant in London that charges you an arm and a leg for that experience? LOL.
Glad you had a great cruise!
I was absolutely floored that he was there at the gangway. The group in front of us grumbled, stuck their noses in the air and glared at him as they left.
My sister and I took the time to smile, shake his hand and compliment his crew and the ships crew. What a hard working bunch!
I was just happy we had an extra 1/2 day on the boat, as it cut down the land time in Lauderdale - which was 55 degrees and windy as all get out. LOL.
I reserved it before the cruise with Nathan's Golf Cart for $80. Numbers are: 1-649-946-1896 or 1-649-231-4856 or 1-786-472-3282. You go through the gate leading to the terminal to pick it up. There were some extras sitting there that could have been rented on the spot I believe. We enjoyed it and you could park it safely anywhere. We were able to see everything we wanted to see on the island. They do drive on the left side of the street there.
jwitt - Thank you! Beautiful photograph. I would have responded earlier, but I was actually on the Eurodam when you posted the photo. :)
Interestingly, when we were in Grand Turk, some type of work was being done on the forward port side anchor. For some reason, I thought it had to do with the dropped anchor in HMC. There were many passengers gathered around the bow when we returned from our excursion. Take a look at these photos. The anchor appears to have a large chunk of coral wedged in it.
What does everyone think? Could this be the anchor and was coral the culprit? I don't understand why they would be working on it in Grand Turk, when I thought the anchor was left at HMC three weeks before (although they did get back there the week before our cruise.)
The photo is of the one and only anchor they had left at that time.
The Starboard Anchor is the one that was cut off in very deep water, rather than at HMC in much shallower water as the Captain had wanted to do. (Seattle decision, now they've lost that anchor whereas at HMC they could have recovered it)
We were on the following cruise (with Boytjie and Typhoon) and in HMC they did not drop anchor at all, but used the ships positioning system. This cost them a bundle in fuel.
Will try to post my photo of the empty Starboard Anchor Well. The straight on one shows an anchor visible in the Port Anchor Well for comparison.
(and also found a snap of the two Cast Members, boys in Drag in costumes from the shows, who came off the ship for Photo Ops.
Thank you for that explanation. :0 Perhaps the port anchor got caught up in coral at Grand Turk on our sailing and they were trying to free it. When in HMC, I am not sure if they anchored or ran the ship's system. The ship did stay exactly in the same position the entire visit.
Sounds like you boys had a great cruise! :D
