Could anybody tell me if the J category staterooms on the R class ships (Rotterdam, Volendam, Amsterdam, Zaandam) are good cabins? Are there any noise problems with these cabins?

Excellent cabins. The only noise we've noticed one cruise was from the couple next door who apparently didn't get along too well - but that can happen in any category.

Thanks so much, Mary Ellen. It looks to be a convenient location.

It is a very convenient location. Just steps away from the largest verandah on the ship. ;)

Over the years we've booked everything from the insides to the full suites. The J cabins are currently our category of choice as we now require a shower stall and I do better in a mid-ship location. It fits our needs and the TV makes an excellent 'window'. :D

That's where I always stay when I'm on the S-class ships, and where I've been staying when I can't get "my" K-cabin on the R-ships. They are just fine.
And they're bigger than the outsides across the passageway! :D

Can anyone tell me whether or not the J staterooms you've been discussing here can accomodate 3? HAL's site is not clear to me. Thanks very much.

Not the ones I've been in on the S- and R-class ships. But I usually get the same cabins.
The deckplans for the ship you are looking at should have a symbol for triple cabins. Check for the symbol in the legend, then look for cabins with that symbol.

Don't confuse the J-categories on the S- and R- ships with those on the Vistas and the Signature ships, though. Those ships have many triples/quads in J-category on Main Deck.

Thank you, Ruth. This is why I am somewhat confused......I am currently booked on Volendam in an MM (dolphin deck) which as I understand will accomodate 3, but the deck plans do not show the 'symbol' for a triple.

Our TA advised there were limited triples on this ship, limited to MM category. I was really hoping for a triple inside on a higher deck, but since I am 'tagging' along on this cruise, I don't feel it is my place to insist we move to a higher deck! (but figured if I did some research, it might help convince my travel mates to move on up!)

Either way, I'll be thrilled to be on a HAL ship once again, and happily introducing my SIL and her friend to the joy of cruising, and the great service and friendly crew of HAL.

Thanks again for your response.

Ruth C., I greatly appreciate the information you provide on so many cruising topics. Thanks to all the others who contribute to this board, too. I will be a first time cruiser this summer, along with nine other members of my family. We will enjoy our cruise so much more with so many of our questions laid to rest!

How nice of you to say so!

Here's hoping that you catch the same virus the rest of us are infected with---that great love of cruising which has no antidote.
