I have a friend who mentioned he might bring a bota bag to fill with his wine. He wondered if I thought this was OK.
To be honest I haven't seen a bota bag since college.:D So, I thought I would bring the question before my peers and see what you thought.
Thoughts, opinions, funny pictures anyone?

I haven't used or even seen one since our skiing days, where it was convenient to have on the slopes. Why would he want to use one on a ship? I think he'd get some strange looks for sure! :)

I had to google it. :o Never heard of a bota bag.
I can't imagine why they would want to bring it on a cruise.

I had to do some quick research to find out what a bota bag was like. I am now a little smarter about the matter.
So, tell me this, all of you experts, does the wine taste funny?
I understand the traditional bota bag is leather with resin, tree sap, or latex lining it.
Umm, isn't that a bad thing?

I had to google it. :o Never heard of a bota bag. We just called them "wine skins".

They were very popular back in the 60s, particularly on the ski slopes of NorCA.
I don't recall ever seeing anyone using one on a cruise ship.

I can't even imagine putting wine in a boga bag for any length of time. For a short time -- like a day -- okay.
But why even bother when HAL permits everyone to bring as much wine onto the ship as they want??

Bota bags are still seen on the ski slopes of Tahoe. They are the in thing with the younger snowboarders. I took a bota bag with me on my Alaskan cruise. I filled it with schnapps. Although the outer skin is leather, the inner bag is lined with plastic.

Oh he`ll fit right in on a HAL ship.
Can you imagine being with this guy when he hoists his bag and slurps his sangria.
Tell him he can enter the 21st century any time.

Wow, same as the rest, so I'll tell my story.
First time skiing, was 17, all iced over trying to snowplow and crashed and burned. Dislocated knee and pain - so I sucked on the bota bag full of screwdrivers I had on me until they shot me up with Demoral (spelling?).
Hell, I'd put it in a Bubba Keg and suck on that - bota's are plastic inside anyways, and the keg would hold the temp better whilst basking on the deck.

Truly, after some of the recent threads we've had, I can hardly wait to see where this one goes :D
My opinion (seeing as you asked) is that he'd be better off walking back to his cabin to refill his wine glass, rather than carrying a wineskin. Not just him -- everyone. I couldn't stand those things "back in the day", and I don't feel any more kindly towards them now.
Of course if he'd a sandals-wearing, cigarette-smoking robe wearer, who tips badly, it'll all work :D

...the portable wine bag (aka a zahato by the Basques) comes in handy when herding sheep and hiking about but may be frowned on by the beverage staff.
Geez, reminds me of 'ancient times', i.e., keggers, crazy love and funny little non-tobacco ciggie-butts.:D
Rock on. An umbrella drink anyone?

I thought the "rules" were that drinks brought aboard were to be drunk in the rooms?
I dunno. If I was going to bring anything along those lines I'd bring a big insulated cup to mix drinks in my cabin, fill with ice, and then take out to the deck.
Wouldn't the wine get warm on the ships deck? Like really warm? I wouldn't have a problem seeing it, I just don't like really warm wine. Unless its mulled.

I love the "herding sheep" comment here about that hippie thing. So funny.
Oh yeah, I saw a bumper sticker recently, oh, forget it. Not for this board.
But, honestly, if you want to drink your wine, why put it in one of those disgusting things that have seen better days? What is it, like 35 years old. Kind of fascinating how these things grow on you like mold.
