We will be sailing out on Honolulu next year and want to spend about three days in Honolulu. My eyes are beginning to cross, reviewing all the reports from Trip Advisor. What are your favorites and not-so favorites?

A good place to start might be checking out the Outrigger properties. There are several in Waikiki. Prices vary, but are usually fairly moderate. We used to stay at the Outrigger Reef which is right on Waikiki Beach. I've heard they just finished a major update to the hotel. I've never stayed at any of the Ohana hotels, but that is a family friendly chain also.

They are of course some fabulous upscale places too....

You might check out the ports of call forum here on Cruise Critic. There are probably discussions about Honolulu hotels there.

DW and I spent one night post cruise at the Waikiki Embassy Suites in May 2008. Overall very nice. Great suite, great complimentary cooked -to- order breakfast, nice pool area Within walking distance to several good restaurants and tons of shopping. Not on the beach, but less than 100 yds away. Only ocean view from top floors suites. Property is surrounded by other high rise properties. Can't comment on the price...We were staying compliments of Hilton Honor points.

Wingit - Ironically, I had zeroed in on either the Reef or the Outrigger Waikiki, with a slight edge to the Reef. What did you like/dislike about it? I think the reason I thought the Reef might be better is because it appears that there is green space to the right of the complex. Is that correct? Both hotels have beachfront bars, do they not?

Well, we used to get a very good rate on it - its been a few years so I don't remember what it was. The regular rooms that we stayed in were average - clean and adequate but nothing special. Its right on the beach. Its right next to Fort DeRussey, which is the green area you're referring to. It was nice to have a room looking out over that park-like area if you can't get an ocean view. I think the location is very good. Right where all the action is, close to shopping and restaurants and other attractions.

The Reef definitely has a beachfront bar (its where my husband and I first met!).

As I mentioned, I do think they've just completed a major overhaul so I would check their website for info about the changes.

Enjoy Honolulu! Its a fun city.

I do NOT recommend Hilton Hawaiian Village. The rooms are hit or miss. Our room smelled like mold and we had to sleep with our balcony doors open, we were on a high floor though. Our friends stayed in a different building with no problems.

I've stayed at the Hyatt several times and it is very nice. It is across the street from the beach right at the King K statue. The rooms and hotel is very well maintained.

For a low rise old style Waikiki hotel with excellent rates check out The Breakers http://www.breakers-hawaii.com/

Our favorite until last week has been the Moana Surfrider, Banyan Wing. We are not as happy with it since the Westin took over and now prefer the Outrigger Waikiki. The rooms are very nice and the restaurants are reasonably priced. This is my favorite location on Waikiki beach because you can walk everywhere, the sand is wonderful, swimming in the ocean is fabulous, and there is just nothing like it, IMO. I guess it depends on what you are looking for in a hotel in Waikiki but we have stayed at several. The Sheraton Waikiki has just redone it's pool areas and has a beautiful infinity pool and bar area. If you are not looking for a beach in front of the hotel this is a nice property but much larger than the Moana or Outrigger. Cherie
