View Full Version : Finally figured out why HAL folks go to bed early

I was looking over a recent Eurodam Review and noticed that they said they went to bed after the shows. This caused me to wonder as to why folks do that. I think I have figured it out. The fault rests with the food service on-board:
1. Breakfast is so good you don't want to oversleep
2. Because of the good breakfast, folks tend to skip lunch
3. By the time dinner arrives you are really hungry from all the relaxation
4. Dinner is so good you over eat (also related to no lunch).
5. After dinner you are so tired that you barely make it to the shows.
6. A show without a drink is like apple pie without ice cream
7. One drink on full stomach and you are done for the night.

So the only alternative for HAL to combat the early to bed syndrome is to screw up the food. How can they expect you to stay up when you have eaten so much food, good food.

They make it so hard on the folks.

How about 10 drinks during the show.....

How about 10 drinks during the show.....

My husband and I went on a HAL cruise and loved it. (14 days to Alaska from Vancouver return). But we did spend a lot of time roaming the decks alone at night. We are both in our very late 50s, but I think we like fun and are still active. We did find it was very quiet at night and I think the passenger ages had a lot to do with this and it was a fairly port intensive cruise.:o

And here I just figured it was because HAL beds are SO comfortable... silly me! ;)

If you can get 10 drinks down after dinner...you aren't eating enough!

Early to bed and early to rise.

It was a ghost town at night on the Veendam last March. You would think that would mean that everyone would be up early, but we were yelled at by an older guy at 9:30 am for talking too loudly in the hallway. I'm hoping we just hit a bad cruise, because we'll be on the Eurodam in a week and a half with our friends and we WILL be having a good time!

We were on that Eurodam cruise and actually stayed up later than usual because the late seating was followed by a late show. On previous cruises we were used to having the show before dinner, not after.;) We occasionally played the slots or checked on email before heading off to bed after the show, but there was really not much else to do, nor did we want to do anything but get into that bed. We are also "early to rise, early to bed" type people. :)

BTW - We didn't skip any meals! :D

Your humorous comments I guess are meant to be complimentary, but on a serious note...the other three ships in your signature you have sailed, do tend to attract a more 'party-hardy' demographic.

I'd never skip lunch, though............Asian stir fry and bread pudding, hungry or not.
Less than four days and "O" here we come again.

I like to watch the sunrise; therefore, watching the moon is out! It is very peaceful about 6:30 on the Lido deck and you get to see the same people every morning.

smoking bar to relax in after dinner or the show so you go back to your cabin to enjoy the last puff and drink of the day.

No, on the contrary, I have no desire to ever go back to those other ships. There is only one line for me, HAL. Great food, Great ship, Great service and fantastic people. It is just hard for me to stay awake when I can hardly move from all the food.

2. Because of the good breakfast, folks tend to skip lunch.

I have to disagree with that one. I think people have an early breakfast so that they're hungry for a big lunch. The Lido was always mobbed at Lunch!;)

I love sea days (about 5 TAs) and the ocean air makes me hungry. I spend most of the day on deck. I don't know if you call it lunch, but a hot dog here, a taco there, and a pizza after a sandwich in the Lido does not make me overeat at dinner. :p
Maybe it's the beer with hot dog, the one with taco, etc. that makes me sleepy?

Once upon a time there was a lady in front of me at the Front Office (I just needed another copy of the Daily Program) who demanded to know why the oxygen levels were being manipulated onboard. She claimed HAL was cost-cutting because if all the guests were asleep we didn't have to pay the crew in the evenings...

There are so many things that could be said that would easily negate this theory... :)

But it was a funny encounter from before I started with HAL that still makes me smile to this day.
