HI.. Anyone been to halifax??
My ship is going there and there is literally nothing on the offered "tours" that looks interesting.. Pier 21 (Halifax) seems to have lots of walking distance shopping???
Anyone know of anything to do there that is outside of a tour??
Thanks in advanced! Terri

Gee... there's plenty to do in Halifax. It's one of my favorite stops.
Pier 21 is the Immigration Museum, right down the quay from where the ship docks. Costs to get in, but is real interesting.
There is a city bus tour which eventually takes you to the main Titanic cemetery (very reverent stop) and returns you to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic as part of the tour. The museum is varied and you can come and go as you please. If you are not on this Titanic tour, you can get a day pass at the museum and come and go during the day. It's about a five or ten minute walk from the ship.
They have a very pleasant walking tour that starts at the top of the city and works down.
If you don't like taking tours, just walk around the city. Go down to the Maritime Museum and turn left. Go up the hill two blocks and get the flavor of the city.
Also, when you get off the ship, there is an information kiosk. Last time (in October), it was located off to the right inside the terminal. They will help you no end.

We were in Halifax in October on Maasdam. There are some good walking tours of the city with maps available on the pier. It is a good walk up to a large park then across the street a short distance to the Citadel staffed with re-enactors and run by the Canadian parks department. They still fire a noon cannon and the citadel has a good museum of the Halifax area. Then a walk back to the waterfront and shopping/museum areas.

Pier 21 is our Ellis Island. It is the point where most people arrived in Canada for years. The museum is interesting as is the Atlantic Musem. Haxifax is also a historic city with a Citidel (Fort). It is also a shopping center (modern). Depending on time of year there are various festivals going on. Please enjoy your stay here. Thank you from a Canadian for visiting our country.

There's quite a lot to do on your own.
Write/call/e-mail the Halifax tourist bureau and they'll send you data, including a self-directed walking tour. You can also get similar info when you get there, either in the arrival hall or in the info kiosk on the boardwall.
The Pier 21 Museum is great. We could have spent the entire day there.
On another visit, we went to the Maritime Museum, also interesting.
The Citadel is of historical interest, complete with reinactors.
One caution, though...Halifax is very hilly. Kind of like an outdoor stairmaster.
Enjoy.
Oh, and make sure you're on deck when the ship docks. The Town Crier greets you...his act is not to be missed.
Also, if you're a bagpipe fan, you'll not be disappointed. We were there once during a pipe competition.

Titanic cemetary and Peggy's Cove - great places.
Depending on what month you will be there, there are some lovely restaurants along the board walk to get a lobster lunch.

Going to Peggy's Cove is a lovely day and the HAL tour we took included the lobster lunch at a restaurant along the way. We then stopped at the Titanic Cemetery on the way back to the ship. Great day.

We also went to Peggy's Cove, Maritime Museum, Citadel, and the two cemeteries where Titanic victims are buried. Halifax is a marvelous port. Don't miss these key sites, whether you take a tour or go it on your own.

I have a tour booked with Jonathan of Yourcab Taxi and Tours. You can reach him at info@yourcab.ca. His tours are very inexpensive and some great reviews on the Port of Call boards. Good luck.

Halifax is one of my all time favorite ports. One time we rented a car and went out to Peggy's Cove. Avis picked us up at the ship and dropped us off when we turned the car in. We were able to arrive at Peggy's Cove before all the tour buses arrived. On another trip we took a very nice "Titanic" tour offered by the ship. Although there are some ports where I'd just as soon stay on the ship this is certainly one of them.

We liked it so much after 2 stops there on cruise ships we actually went there for a week's vacation and explored the areas in and outside Halifax by car. We loved it!! And it's a long way from California!!!

I live an hour north of Halifax and I love the city.
My favorite things to do? I love walking along the water front and visiting the museums. The Public Gardens are a great place to rest and watch the ducks and pidgeons. The Historic Propeties offer some quaint stores and interesting buys. Try a beavertail on the water front. (It's a pastry!!). Take the ferry across to Dartmouth and return back to Halifax.
'Check-in Nova Scotia' will send you information on the province and more information can be found on the Nova Scotia government webpage.

Take a 15 minute walk from Pier 21 and have a look at St. Mary's University. Green Bay Packers OG Steve Morley is a St. Mary's grad.

I did the half day Peggy's Cove trip and really enjoyed it. The ride back and forth was also nice. If you are looking for shopping, I was disapointed in the shopping along the Wharf and going a few blocks inland. There were many nice restaurants in this area and it was pleasant walking along the waterfront. On the way to Peggy's Cove, we passed a large indoor shopping mall. That is where I would go if I return to Halafax. There were also shops in Peggy's Cove that were very nice. There was also a craft show in the Cruise Terminal Building.
