My husband and I like to snorkel on our own without a tour operator because we like to snorkel for hours on end. With a tour, the snorkel time is usually between 45-90 min. Any suggestions for good snorkel spots we can get to on our own from our cruise ship?

St Kitt's is not the best sport for off-shore snorkeling but I have found that there is decent snorkeling at South Frigate Bay (extreme southern edge by the rocks) (saw an octopus there) and South Friar's Bay (reef bands just offshore and more fish than South Frigate Bay). Both spots are a reasonably short taxi ride from the docks. Return taxis are also pretty easy to get from both areas.
Personally of the two I would recommend South Friar's a bit more. There are other snorkeling spots but I have not tried them - so I won't comment.

Best St Kitt's snorkeling that I did was from a boat (S*h*i*t*t*e*n Bay - yes that is the name) - lots of fish and coral.
