Does holland Eurodam or the Ruby Princess have contests such as " sexy leg contests" or " Hairy chest contests?" We are trying to decide between Princess and Holland. We are in our 40's and not really into wine tasting and art lectures but we are not party people either. Just looking for a cruise that will be relaxing and not boring.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

HAL does not have any contests like that on any ship.

Such contests certainly are not consistent with the "personality" of Holland America Lines. I've never seen such a contest on HAL, or Princess either, for that matter. I would be terribly disappointed if things denegrated to that level.

Are you saying you like things like 'sexy legs' or 'hairy' chest?

You say you do not like wine tasting or art lectures. What do you like to do onboard? Can you give us a couple of examples.

Have you looked at Royal Caribbean? IMO they are halfway between Carnival and HAL in terms of onboard activities.

I 've only been on one and my husband has never been on any. We like the activites like shuffleboard and ping pong...the quieter activities. We really don't care about the parties on deck.

Ping pong, bingo, shoot the golf ball in the hoop in the pool, slot machine tournaments, trivia games, cooking classes, tea in the afternoon and wonderful libraries that have puzzles and board games, sudoku and trivia on paper every morning etc. Very relaxing cruise.

Holland America provides just enough for you to find some activity to enjoy. However, their activities are more social than spectacle. They aren't set up so you are providing entertainment to the other passengers, like the contests you mention.

So you have Teas where you can meet other passengers. One of my favorite activities was the mixology class. Got to meet some very nice and fun people in that one.

So in a nutshell, Holland is much less hooting and hollering and more experience sharing. The focus is on you being entertained, not everyone else focused on you for their entertainment.

From what you say you enjoy, Holland would fit perfectly.

One other thing, I am in my Fifties and the itineraries are so port intensive that I needed the sea days just to recover LOL.

OK, sorry to be a butthead, but I saw this thread and starting laughing. I know I've only sailed once, but to picture most of my shipmates' legs bared just, well, it just, no - you wouldn't want that.

(I'd of won, though - I got a gut on me but biking 3,000 miles/yr gave me GREAT legs!!!):D

HAL, sometimes on its longer cruises, has one activity that I believe is unique in the industry....a model ship building contest.
Teams of up to 6 may enter, and gathering materials that they can find on board, construct a model ship that is judged by cheers from the audience for appearance, and 'seaworthiness' when placed in the lido pool.

Even my 21-year old granddaughter, who went on a Carnival spring break cruise a few weeks ago, said she was too mature for the crowd. Huh????? Too mature????? Must be a side of her I have yet to discover.

On our two week cruise they had a 'marriage game' which was held like a game show. It was hilarious, they had questions that were all over the map and lead to some really creative answers. It was a great way to spend an hour and a good time for all watching.

Try reading some of the Carnival threads, you will be amazed. It is an astonishingly different culture, but then, different ships for different folks.
Your granddaughter is probably more mature than you know!

Carnival also has ship building contests. The ships are no where near as elaborate as they seem to get on HAL. But then there are more kids building them and it is a real family experience.

On our Westerdam b2b last Feb, there was a sexy legs contest, as well as a belly flop contest.
I was kind of surprised; I didn't expect to see that on HAL.

With all us seniors on HAL, I think the only contests we could win would be for the most varicose veins and the most ear hair ;)

How about 'droopiest boobs' for women and 'most bald' for the men? :D

Actually, I'm glad that HAL doesn't usually have those kinds of body comparisons contests. Doesn't seem in keeping with the image I have of HAL.

You got me laughing on that one! We are in our mid forties and I guess I would rather see the ear hair and be on a quieter ship , than to see people partying until they get sick....

Shootr, I saw you like shooting. Can I ask , what kind? Do you do it as a sport??

Little of everything. Started shooting trap out of high school but gave up tournaments when the kids came along 11 years ago.

I don't do well at long distance target - never had a decent gun and my eyes are failing me, but can pop pretty much anything inside of 200yds. I use a modified SKS and AR15 for that.

Inside 100yds I have a Remington 597 .22 and, wait for it, my AR15 pistol. I can touch targets inside 75yds one handed with it. It's what I keep for home protection, along with a Springfield Armory V10 .45 Compact for out on the town.

My family never hunted, so I totally missed out on that experience. I don't have a fever for it so I don't miss it, except when all my customers start planning and heading out during the season.

As a side note, Arizona is on the cusp of finally allowing concealed carry without a permit. All sides are happy with the rules and it should get signed in within the month!

How 'bout you?

Best I can do for now! When DW gets back next week I'll have her take a good one! ...and if you're good I might wear my cycling shorts when she takes it.:D

...and no, I don't shave my legs - I'm not THAT big into cycling!!!

HAL does have the sexiest scooter and most wicked wheelchair contest.

Almost forgot the wild walker races.

During our 2008 Thanksgiving cruise aboard the Eurodam there was Adult Pool Games on the 2nd sea day. The first event of the games was a male sexy dance contest. Being the oldest (and least sexy) of the male contestants, the CD had me go last, and whispered in my ear to sit in one of the judges laps (they were all female).

I guess I'll do anything for a DAM dollar.

Okay, that's interesting, I wasn't aware, having never sailed on Carnival. You are right about some ships on HAL being elababorate and sometimes very creative.

 One great thing about HAL is the lack of created poolside "excitement". We actually saw several people reading books!

The only activity I witnessed was a golf pitching contest where the winner hit the most dolphins. If you want a screaming MC with nonstop poolside noise this may not be the line for you.

On one cruise HAL we did
Susan Wood created mayhem poolside
with horse racing....
I have never seen poolside so busy
as we all lined up to place bets,
and win HAL tokens.

I haven't seen horse racing played in years. :( It used to be such fun. I never knew why it was stopped. Anyone have any ideas?

We won the horse race on the Viking Serenade. 1990 or thereabouts.
The pot had grown to around $600.00 as I recall. They were fun. I`d like to see them return.

I am sure they still have horse racing Ruth,
but seems to be mainly on the longer, voyage cruises ,
when they have several sea days in a row.

Last year the Westerdam (Carribean) had the sexy legs. speed don't (opposite of speedo), and other pool contests with Jazzy. It was in good fun.
Lots of trivia games and battle of the sexes (the males won no matter how much the CD tried to get us to lose - females got 2 pts for each right answer, males got 1).

The Amsterdam (Alaska) had more subdued games - nothing at the pool.

The itinerary influences the activities

If anyone really misses horse racing you could come play @ the Assisted Living where I work. Sometimes they change the animals to go with a theme, should be Bunny races coming up! I think they only play for pennies though

If they do, I haven't seen it. I do take longer cruises, and those with several consecutive sea days. Cruises over 30 days, crossing the Atlantic, would have horse racing, if any cruise does.
