Did anyone have a problem storing a laptop in the room safe? Mine is 14.75 x 9.50 (37.5 x 24 cm). Will it fit or do I have to hide it in the room so that it doesn't grow legs ?

I doubt it will fit in the safe... simply stow in the wardrobe or in a drawer. No way do you have to worrry about it 'growing legs'. Pigs might fly too!

My Acer netbook fits very easily in the safe on Eurodam but on none of the other ships. Most of us agree, laptops are perfectly safe being left on countertops in cabins. I have a lock for mine and never even bother to use it. If you feel uncomfortable leaving it out, put it in a drawer when you leave the cabin or even store it in one of your empty suitcases.

I think it will be a tad big. Room safe won't take much more than an 8½ x 11 sheet of paper IIRC. That said, I have taken my laptop on nearly all of my cruises, leave it out in the room without giving at second thought and have never had a problem. If you remain concerned, you can always bring a cable lock.

The safe in our cabin on the O-dam was too small to store a laptop, or my netbook, for that matter. So, to be on the safe side :p, I left my netbook plugged in, sitting on the desk, 24/7 during our cruise. It was always there when I returned and, frankly, I never gave it a thought. God apparently still watches over fools?

Not going to fit....we always bring a lock and then lock it in one of the big suitcases under the bed or in the closet area. Although on HAL I am never to worried about the stuff in my room vanishing. :)

I always just leave my laptop on the desk. No one has ever touched it. I would not worry about it. It does not fit in the safe. I just found it more convenient to leave it set up.

The safes on the E-dam are larger than on any of the other ships. On the S- and R-class ships, the locking drawers on the nightstand are wider than on the Vista ships, and your laptop may fit in there.
It would have to be a small laptop to fit in the locking drawer on the Vista ships.

We have a very expensive Sony travel computer, we were just on the Veendam for 14 days and left it plugged in, it was never even moved. Hotels now that is a different story, we locked it in the safe or took it with us. I think valuables are very safe , we did lock up our money and jewelery.

We've never locked ours up on board ship. We will just place it in a drawer if we need the top space, but it generally stays right by the TV on the desk/dresser top. Never once have we had any type of problem! :)
We do lock it in one of our suitcases when staying in hotels, however. That's a whole other ball of yarn!

I just always use the travel lock/cable with it and cable it "just in case" to one of the bars on the desk. Cabin doors are open often while crew is cleaning, so I just feel safer knowing that it's tethered.

My husband keeps his on the dresser/countertop. Always open and ready to use. Always there and never bothered. He has put it in a drawer if we are off the ship on an excursion for the day. But we never worry about it!

I had heard that the safe's were larger on the Eurodam and you could store a laptop but ours was very small on our recent cruise on the Eurodam. No way could any laptop fit except maybe one of the new small notebook type ones. Maybe the safes are larger in a "suite".
It was the first time my DH had brought a laptop and he just left it out on the desk and it was fine.
By the way, one night while we were dressing for dinner, I was in the safe and got my wallet out and forgot to put it back in the safe. Over $800 in cash was in the wallet with credit cards. We were out most of the evening and when I returned I noticed it was out and my heart almost stopped. But .... it didn't look like it had been touched and nothing was missing. :)
We have never had anything taken from our stateroom on a cruise.

I have never had anything missing from a cabin and my cameras are more expensive than any laptop.

That's strange. I quickly noticed that my safe was significantly larger on the E-dam. I was in a J-category inside, not a suite.
I don't know if it would have held my laptop, but mine is larger than are made nowdays.

I have a 19" Acer, and I just put it out of sight (i.e. bottom of closets, drawers) in its case. That shouldn't be a worry. Nothing will happen to it.

Your cabin attendant doesn't have time to mess with your stuff...turn it off...stick it out of sight...no one will bother it.

Mine fits nicely in the locking nightstand drawer, but the only time I've put it there is when there was an announcement of work being done in the cabin by someone other than our stewards, such as on the veranda railings or carpet cleaning. Other than then, it stays on the desk.

How big are the safes on the vista ships?

How big are the safes on the vista ships?
The Vista safes appeared to be the same size as on the earlier ships. That is to say, small. I was able to stack my wallet, change purse, passport, and a few other things of that nature in it. There's no way my jewelry case would fit.
The inside is larger than the door opening, so that, too, makes a difference in what you can put in there.

As Ruthless said. The cabin safes on Eurodam, not a Vista, are currently the biggest in the fleet and are operated by a combo code. Here's a pic of one of them bad boys on Eurodam

The same laptop that fit handily inside my Eurodam safe was a no go on the Zuiderdam. I just propped it up next to the safe and all was well.

My Acer Aspire 11.6" fit in the safe on the Ryndam this last summer. I was surprised and hadn't even thought about it before the cruise. I did have to angle it to get it in and it did not set flat, but was fine. I still had room for my wallet, passport, etc. :)

I have been bringing a laptop on my cruises since around 2001 and haven't had any problems with laptops evolving legs and walking off. For the first few cruises I would store my laptop in a drawer (usually one of those in the night stand) and that was that. More lately, however, I tend to just store it in its travel bag by the bed when I'm not using it. Mine is a MacBook Pro 17-inch and so it won't fit in those tiny (and rare) drawers to be found on the Eurodam.

As Ruthless said.
Why, John. I didn't know you cared. :o "Ruthless" is a pretty strong love word, you know.
Or perhaps you don't know the story of why my husband called me that? I don't recall sharing it with you.

Which reminds me of an excellent point. Be sure to check the front corners of the safe, when you are packing to go. Many items, expensive jewelry included, have been left there because it's kind of a hidden area. We found, and turned in, a diamond cocktail ring left by the room's previous occupants. Or, who knows, maybe the occupants before them.

Locking Drawers:confused:???? Please explain...I've not been on a HAL ship so this is new to me. Thanks The top drawer of each nightstand has a lock and key. Sometimes a key is missing, or the lock is broken, but we've never had a HAL cabin without a least one that worked.

On our Veendam cruise last month the night stands had keys on the top drawers so you could lock them if you chose to and take the key. The drawer is wider than the safe and would be better for a laptop. Also was nice to have as our safe went out of service and they weren't able to fix it for several days.
