I'm so happy and excited and wanted to share... I got a visit from the upgrade fairy. From an inside guarantee to a lanai cabin. Who-hoo! I've never had an upgrade before, this is exciting for me.
Yay!

Ooooo! Nice upgrade. From an inside to a cabin with a door. That's a good one.
Have a great time. And don't expect this to happen every cruise. They're just trying to sucker you in. ;)

Lol. I'm prepared to be suckered. I'm willing!!!
It's just a short 4 day cruise up the coast (which is why I probably was offered the upgrade). It was only $40 and I'm traveling by myself.
I've never had anything but an inside cabin before. Because I spend all the money I have traveling and not leaving a lot for anything else. So I'm even MORE psyched!

Woo hoo!!
High fives on the upgrade.
I'm doing a coastal, too (May 5 Ryndam) and have been obsessive-compulsively checking my online docs for my cabin assignment. :) We booked outside GUAR, so one can always hope. :)
You'll have to post what the lanai cabin experience is like for you. I'm not sure I'd like it as having that big patio door with people going by at all hours brings up privacy/security concerns for me.

Fridayeyes - I will certainly post here with my thoughts on the lanai rooms. I'm not very security conscious. I ought to be; I work with criminals for a living, but I tend to be very trusting so that issue wasn't a concern for me.

No worries! Your balcony door is not accessible from anywhere other than your cabin. No one will "get you" or be able to peer into your cabin when at sea. There are secure steel divider walls between the balconies of each cabin.
Just be careful in port. If your balcony happens to face dockside (or another ship) you may want to keep those drapes drawn when changing clothes, etc....!!! :o

I read somewhere on another thread that the lanai doors are mirrored on the outside. This ensures your privacy.
Enjoy your upgrade and have a great cruise.

Wow - that's good to know! I need to try to look through our balcony doors with our binoc's the next time we are in port to see if we can - -see! :D
I remember when we were on the Eurodam and we docked in NYC right next to the Norwegian Spirit. We were ve-r-y close to the Spirit and we got a "wonderful(?)" view from our balcony into a one of the Spirit balcony cabins, of a man wrapping a towel around his waist while standing in front of the sliding. door... Not good! :p No mirrors on those balcony doors!!

Bulgargirl posted that she's in a lanai cabin, not a balcony. Her cabin opens directly to the Lower Promenade public deck. Her cabin doors will be one-way, so long as the lights are not on inside the cabin at night.

Having not been on a ship with lanai rooms yet, this may or may not be the case. The "rules of the road" with rooms along the promenade are that the windows are TINTED, and like any tinted windows they can be illuminated from inside.
In this case, the windows are mirrored. My goal when I get onto Rotterdam is to take a walk around the ship in the evening and see if I can see in while walking by... Surely SOMEONE will have their lights on, right? :)

Thanks everyone!
I will certainly try to take and post pictures. I need to do something about my camera situation, but I will have something sorted out by then.
And I'm TOTALLY putting on all the lights in my room and standing outside to see what can be seen. And I'm sticking my face right up to the window too. I might be pretty trusting, but I don't trust people that much! :D

wonderful news. you'll have a great time. Just a quickie question. how does one get the upgrade fairy to visit? We usually book the inside room and pick our own room number on the J deck, is that a guaranteed room? we book with online website and get a good price, at least in our mind. so how do we get the fairy to visit? thanks.

I don't know how it normally happens. I had an e-mail telling me about the offer and giving me a toll-free number to call. The lady who helped me was excellent and very nice.

I might be pretty trusting, but I don't trust people that much! :DIn the Lower Prom rooms that we've had on the Amsterdam and Statendam, it was still very difficult to see much of anything in our room with all lights on at night because the lights on deck are quite bright, and are on all night. If you like a really dark room (as we do) be sure to bring clothespins or potato-chip bag clips to keep the drapes tightly closed at night.

Just got off the Rotterdam on April 10th and the Lanai are mirrored on the outside and you cannot see in even with the lights on. No worries. It's a nice cabin. Great for one person as yourself but I find a little small for two. Enjoy!!
