What do you suggest for a family of 3 flying in the night before the cruise. Are there any hotels that will shuttle them to/from the airport and to/from the port the next morning for free? Are they better off staying near the port or in Orlando? What is the fee for a taxi/limi from Orlando to Port?

No free shuttles, the port is about 50 miles from Orlando. There are plenty of town car services, or you can rent a car and drop it off at a Port Canaveral rental office.
If you're flying in late, I'd just stay at the airport Hyatt or one of the airport hotels. If you're flying in earlier in the day you can rent a car or take a town car service to one of the Port Canaveral area hotels; some of those have shuttles to the port, but you would probably be best served by a taxi (not expensive).
