Good Morning. DW and I will be in Curacao on Oct 23, and I was wondering what the best beach would be to go to for a relaxing day in the sun. Also what amenities are there?
Thanks

There are several beaches that I liked in Curacao. There is Blue Bay: they have a dive shop, nice beach and a little dock with fluffy chairs with umbrellas. they have food (best french fries on the island!) and a bar. Cannot walk to this beach, but it is about a 10-15 minute ride.

Then there is Hooks Hut area. they have a Dive Shop, nice beach and a bar also. They are next to the Hilton in Curacao. They also have a restaurant and they have great Wings and Bittenballen.......YUM. It is not as far away as Blue Bay. Takes about 5 minutes to get there.

Then there is Holiday Beach....close to port and it was close to where I worked, when I lived there. They have a nice beach. There is also a Dive Shop and pool and restaurant and bar. No ride needed to get there. my favorite food there was the Fajitas and frozen drinks and the beer was always cold.

There are lots of other beaches that are equally as nice ALL over the Island, but it took me 1 year to visit most of them as I dove most them.
I will be headed back on cruise in November......cannot wait.

Is it easy to get a taxi back to the ship from Blue Bay? I imagine if going to Hooks Hut area, you could get a taxi from the Hilton Hotel??

Thanks for all your help.

Yes, easy either way. Blue Bay is part of a Best Western site. Can look it up on line. Hook's Hut too. Don't even have to walk to the Hilton, just catch a cab there. Just ask your driver that takes you there to pick ya up at a certain time and they will be there. If not, just let staff know you need a cab.

You can try Playa Porto Mari for a beautiful beach that isn't very crowded and has plenty of umbrellas and chairs. It has a double reef that is very close to shore (50' - 100') with plenty of fish to see in the ultra clear water. It does require a 20 or 25 minute taxi ride (or you can do what we did and rent a car at the pier and drive--it's not that hard to find). They have a nice web site, playaportomari.com, that has all the information and contacts you'll need.

Yes, but the amount is so minimal. the fees help keep the beaches clean. Most of the public beaches are trashy and unkept and no facilities. All beaches on the south, west and east have great snorkeling areas.

i loved the marriott beach/hotel area. Spent a lot of time there, but they charge cruisers to use their beach and pool area. They have a great bar, which is also a swim up bar, great restaurant, wonderful beach, bathrooms are clean, and it is close to port. Maybe a 5-6 minute drive, to the west. They make the burgers on the island.

i like them both. Holiday Beach is just east of the MegaPier@ the Renaissance Marriott hotel. Off the ship ... go left about 3 blocks.

Hooks Hut ... about a 5 minute car ride. took me 40 minutes to walk it, but if you are not into walking...not far.

amen........I just got back from cruise to Belize, Roatan and Cozumel. hands down...curacao has better diving. I really miss the diving there. The water clarity in Belize and Roatan was not good, at all. Cozumel was great, but no match to Curacao. I cannot wait to see Elvis...will have to find Cerita...does she work at the Marriott also? If so, where.?

I just want to beach it for the day and check out the town. I have been looking at Knap Bay, but it is hard to find info. It seems that it also goes by a few other names. I am looking for info on a cab to get there from the pier. How long? How Much? Etc. We are docked from 8-4 so not a long day. I am wondering if it would even be worth the trek out there or if we should go somewhere closer to the pier. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I liked Holiday Beach. I spent a lot of time there as they have a great bar, great restaurant and a great beach. There is also a dive shop, pool, restrooms, and a shower to use before you leave. There is also a casino there, so if someone in your group does not like "beaching" it all day. Never been in the casino so I cannot offer much info there. When I was there, lots of our Military were staying there, so I felt proud to hang with them and share stories of home. Super Bowl was fun them, as most of them were from Pittsburgh at the time.

Kon Tiki is OK, but it is crowded, noisy and the dive shop was not open at the time for night dives. I did not go there much.http://boards.cruisecritic.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Curacao,

You have so much information, just wondered if you can help with this one!

I have mobility issues, and may take my scooter off the ship (if it is practical) We are thinking of going to Holiday Beach. Are there side walks to navigate my scooter on? Is there a place the scooter could be left at the Beach?

If Holiday Beach is not a good option, can you suggest another that might work for me?

yes there are sidewalks, just be careful...If parked at the Mega Pier, get off ship and go left. Holiday Beach is just on the other side of Denny's.

I think the Holiday Beach is a great option with moblility. You can possibly leave the scooter at this large area that is by the bar. just a few steps and you're on the beach and a few more after that you are in the water. There is a breaker there so the Waves don't come in.

I worked/lived there for a year and went to MOST of the beachs and a lot of the dive sites.

FYI..Mambo and Kon-Tiki would not be a good option. Just an FYI!

Good Luck...Take care....have fun.

Taxi was $20 round trip. It's cheaper if you put together a group and take a van. They will come back to get you whenever you tell them to.

Scuba dive--one tank dive--including equipment $23

Entrance fee, two chairs and an umbrella was $15

Bucket of Dutch beer was $16

We had a wonderful day. Full facilities, dive shop, restaurant/bar, nice sandy beach. Bring swim shoes. The water is rocky, but fairly calm. Great for snorkeling. There is a double reef right off the beach!

Knip beach for swimming is the best beach, clear water. Knip bay is at the West part of the island.
Theire is no entrance fee but no place to take a shower after swimming.
Porto Marie is a nice beach for snorkeling entrance fee is $2 and $ 3 for chairs has a restaurant and has facilities for shower. West side of the island
Lagun is nice for snorkeling but no facility for shower but on your left hand upstairs is a small restaurant with facilities of shower also.Restaurant is good and not expensive. West side of the island.

Playa Hookshut has a lot of stones lately but has all the faciliteis not so attractive for snorkeling but it is not so far as the three mention above.

I looked at their website and it looks absolutely beautiful! Is the pool really that close to the beach?

I couldn't find an email address on the website to ask for instructions on how I as a non-hotel guest can use their facility.

Can you provide that information? Do we just go to the front desk and pay the fee? Do they limit the number of day passes allowed? Do you remember what the fee is? and one more, I assume cabs to get back to the ship are easy to find?

Thanks for the info, it looks lovely!

Yes he pool really is that close. I never paid a fee, but I was a regular there for dinner and drinks and sometimes just a drink !!!! But if you cannot find their website, go thru the Marriott in the U.S. You also may have to call directly. I would wait until a closer time of your arrival for their latest information. I read where they aren't selling day passes and then were they are. I am sure it depends on the time of year you go and how many cruise ships are in port that day. They don't want to overbook their beach ... it is a nice beach but it is not a long, large beach....but they have a beautiful view of the Caribbean.

Mambo Beach. They have a casino at Breezes Hotel. Food and Bars everywhere. there is also good snorkeling, but the better snorkeling would be at the Dive Bus which is right there also, just not on Mambo Beach. You would also be close to Dolphin Academy.

it will be between $25.00-$40.00 depending on the day and what is going on, on the island the day you are there. Cas Abou is a nice beach, but most beaches on Curacao are nice. the have a place to eat and a bar and nice restrooms and a dive shop and chairs with umbrellas and I do believe that the Dive shop rents out water toys... like kayaks and such. Can't remember what all they have as I am I diver and did not pay much attention to that. It will take you about 30 minutes to get to the beach from the Port.

Blue Bay is Best Western Blue Bay. I have attached a picture of the beach for ya. The end umbrella is mine!!!!!!!!!! they can be found online at www.bluebay-curacao.com (http://www.bluebay-curacao.com).. From a cruise ship you will need transportation to get there. They also have a golf course, the only one on the island.

Holiday Beach has changed their name in the past year. they can be found on line at www.venotocuracao.com (http://www.venotocuracao.com). My pictures of Holiday Beach are pretty much party or diving pictures and not OF the beach itself, so I did not send a personal picture. From the cruise ship, you can walk.

Both beaches are excellent for snorkeling and diving. Good Luck on Making your decision.

Thanks for the updated link. It did work but when I checked on the beach it says it is a private beach:
Curaçao Private Beach
Considered by some as the ‘Crown Jewel’ of the Holiday Beach Resort, or our ‘Ace in the Hole’ is our private white sand beach that surrounds the semi-circular, blue lagoon. Enjoy a spectacular sunset while sipping a refreshing island beverage under the palms lining the picturesque lagoon. For guests who are staying in the cabana suites, the miraculous experience can be witnessed while lounging on your own private patio.

The beach and lagoon also serve as the launch platform for the novice SCUBA enthusiasts. After graduating from the pool area, guests are encouraged to encounter the beauty of the Caribbean in this safe and secure environment. Following an open sea session, divers congregate for a toast at the Tanga beach side bar, while enjoying the traditional Caribbean music playing in the background.

Is this the same one you spoke about in response the the poster with mobility issues. We will be there in October and a member of our party also has mobility issues so we want to be sure of our plans before we leave. Thanks.

They may consider the beach Private, but IF they did that NOONE would be at the bar/restaurant.!!! half of their rooms are for US Military ... plus there is a dive shop just to the west of the bar/restaurant. So go have a drink... eat and enjoy. Just tell them you are going to the Casino or Beach bar.........there won't be a problem.

Mobility is not an issue here but it may be a little rough because of the pavers/bricks, but the area in the back is pretty smooth. Should not be a problem.

We are looking for good snorkeling and beach time. Above it states a price. It this round trip or one way? per person or per taxi?

Sorry just getting really really confused on all the places to pick from

It is all worth it. There are other beaches/places that are closer. Hooks Hut for one....that has great snorkeling and beach time and closer to Pier.
Cos Abao is a little bigger and busier. You do get to see a lot more of the island going to other beaches, but if that does not interest you at all, go close.......to Holiday Beach, Hooks Hut, Mambo Beach. It can be confusing for those going for just a day as it was tough to pick which one every weekend...for a year. Glad to be back in the States though.

Good Luck on the decision making.

Yes, I knew that you worked for them. I asked you in another thread about it. You had mentioned in a post that you work in the football industry, or something like that. Since I am a HUGE football fan I had to ask.
They are looking good this season! It must be exciting around there!

It is, but they allow tailgating to start 4 hours before game starts so some fans come in sloshed and have no idea that there is a football game going on.!! We have Cowboys this Sunday....let the rivalry begin. It is all in fun..only a game. I was in Curacao for a SuperBowl, when Pittsburgh won their last SuperBowl. I was the only one there wearing a LONG SLEEVE Cowboy shirt. I thought I was going to loose it...about died in the heat, but the beer was cold. I was at Holiday Beach !

I would think so. You do have to enter the Hotel lobby to get to the Casino, which will be on the left. continue to walk thru the area until you reach the pool, also on the left....pass the pool and the restaurant/bar is on the left.

No .... the island is new to American Tourist somewhat. They haven't figured it out yet, like Mexico and other places have.... But they can and will make their money on food and beverages and tips. It is a nice beach and it is small.

i see an excursion taken from the cruise ship for a boat ride to van der Valk Beach. Is it only accessable by the water or can i take a taxi. How far from the cruise ship..

Most likely going to go to blue bay but it is always good to look at options.

Well, I have read and reread also. I am more confused now than ever. lol!!

Holiday beach. Public or private?

Holiday beach, this hotel Renaissance Marriott hotel or this hotel Veneto Casino?

I have a group of 20-30 people depending on me to find the best beach, close to the peir, that has a great sand beach, chairs, shade, no waves, food, drink and bathrooms. I do not want to take them someplace only to find out that we can't use the beach. That would be bad!:(

We are thinking of hooks hut, but if we can save the taxi fare and go to holiday beach instead, and still have all the amenities that would be better yet. PLUS we have a couple with mobility issues as well.

Advice please. I have a headache!!:D

Marriott Beach is NOT a natural beach and it is a private beach and only accessible thru the Hotel with a room key.

Holiday Beach area does belong to a hotel, but I never had to pay an access fee because I ate at their restaurant, drank at their bar. Since you have that many people and mobility issues you might want to give them a call to verify so you will know in advance. The island is not ADA certified by a long shot, as we know ADA in the states. Something to keep in mind. Hooks Hut is wonderful too, but getting on the beach may present a problem with accessiblity on to the beach. If they can get out of their chairs or scooters, then there won't be a problem. Holiday Beach is Veneto Casino............Marriott Renaissance is Carnival Casino.
No waves at either beach....there are ususally no waves at any of the beaches on the south...

I can not find any beaches online in a google search for Holiday Beach and Blue Bay. Are they called anything else? Would love to see some pictures of the beach, but nothing comes up under their names. thanks in advance

I have to say from the perspective I saw it, Holiday Beach did not look very appeaking with all the industrial stuff nearby and the port so close. But others have reported enjoying it so perhaps it looks better once you are there. I took this from the balcony of our cabin on the Millennium at port last March. The rest of the pictures show Porto Mari which is not close to the pier but worth the ride in my opinion.

It is really not industrial .... it is the desalinazation (sp ??) plant, Aqualectra. You can actually drink the water in Curacao, unlike parts of the US.. Their industrial area is in Spanish Waters areas, which is up the channel, past the shipping piers and to the left. They jet ski, sail, and wind surf in Spanish waters, but I never did because of the Oil companies, Valero and Curoil are all back there. There is a great wreck dive just yards off the MegaPier but noone can dive the wreck as long as there is a ship in port. The water is very clear and lots of sealife in this area, just like the rest of the island.

Guess it depends on what ya want to do ... be close, be halfway or 45 minutes away...... there is a beach for everyone. Cannot see them all in one day, but I am going to try in November

lsimon thanks for the pictures. even if that is a water treatment plant it still looks industrial with the smoky stacks in the background. I would be dissapointed if my day was planned going to a beach day on Holiday beach i can do that at home which has beaches close to industry. That is why I go away. But the other beach porto playa mari looks great and just what i would like to enjoy for a beach day. love amstel bright, nice cold small bottles, yum.

I had one other trip to Curacao and missed a beach day to shop because when we pulled into the pier noticed it look kind of industrial and went to plan b. which was our loss for not being informed about other parts of the island.

Curacao: As for US drinking water being a problem! It is great in my area and I haven't had any issues in the other parts of the country. Where have you had problems?

A few weeks and I'll have my own opinion of beaches in Curacao. Planning on Blue bay at this point. And I'll drink Amstel Bright not water even though it is purified salt water.

Thanks to everybody for all the info.

I have tried to read through all the posts here and I am still not sure where to go. We are a party of six and would like a nice beach with snorkeling and facilities. I see that some are recommended over and over. LSimon had some great pics on another thread. Sorry can't remember the name of the beach. Could someone please tell me which ones have amenities (changing facilities/bathrooms/food), how far from the port and how much it would cost to get transportation there for the six of us? Thanks!

The only beach we've spent a lot of time at is Porto Mari. After we spent a day there we wanted to return on our next trip to the island and are planning a 3rd trip there next spring. Porto Mari has all the facilities you are asking about and all are very nice. Taxi cost is $10/pp each way or $20/pp round trip. Admission was $10 for two of us, including chairs. I can't say exactly how far from port it is but seems like the ride was a little over 20 minutes or so.

I've also been to Kontiki once and it is closer to the port. We only went there for lunch and it was a nice facility, with food a little more upscale than at Porto Mari - although Porto Mari had a nice selection of beach food including some fresh sea food. I've heard there is snorkeling there and don't know if there are changing facilities or not.

The beaches I've read the most about are Porto Mari (which we've been to), Cas Abao (which we haven't but are considering) and Kontiki - all of which I believe have the facilities you are looking for. Porto Mari taxi is $10/pp each way and I think I read that the cost to Cas Abao is about the same. Kontiki is closer and less expensive but I'm not sure of the total cost. Porto Mari had an entrance fee of about $10 for the two of us which included beach chairs. There were no umbrellas there but chairs were available under palapitas and in shady areas near trees. I don't know what the fees are at the other beaches. The only time we went to Kontiki we only had lunch at the restaurant there (pretty nice) and didn't sit on the beach.

We were taken to the Mambo beach as part of our excursion and I didn't like it at all... it was dirty and smelled like raw fish that was coming from the kitchen there on the beach. The beach chairs were old and crammed into this tiny beach. I would not go there again. Seemed like a beach where a lot of locals hung out but not many tourists.

Blue Bay Resort was very nice. It is closer than Porto Mari which is really where we wanted to go, but Blue Bay was half the cab price so we went there. Blue Bay was very nice, 8.00 pp ent.fee includes chairs, shades, pool and beach. I loved the beach and thought it was beautiful and peaceful. There are some large rocks to beware of but you can see them so it wasn't a problem for us. We had beers and snacks from the snack bar, very reasonably priced and they take US dollars but change is in local currency. There is also a full resturant a la carte and seemed a bit more pricey. Pool was mostly empty, large and shady. Very quiet. I don't care for the louder noisey beaches and this was perfect for us.

I've seen some posts about Holiday Beach that paint it as a nice place. This surprised me since it didn't look very nice viewed from our ship. Yours is the first post relaying an unsatisfactory experience there.

We have been to Kontiki couple times. Can't remember the fares now. I think it was very cheap. Here are my guess, taxi $5 pp, resort entrance fee $3 pp, drinks $3-5. We usually just hanged around the beach. Last year, we brought our own snorkeling equipment. The ocean was rough outside of the breakwater, but was calm inside. Unfortunately the rough ocean stirred up the sediment that affected the visibility.

There are no buses. The taxi fare as of 18 months ago was $10pp each way ($20/pp round trip). I've read a couple of posts that say if you have less than 4 people then there may be a higher minimum cab price of $40 each way ($80 round trip) but can not confirm as we've always gone in a larger group. Many of the taxi's are vans which can easily carry around 8 or so. If you have only 2 and there is a minimum you might be able to hang around the taxis a bit and see if there are others going there to group up with - the taxi drivers and dispatcher would probably help with this.

Did you arrange for the taxi to return for you or do they regularly come through/taxi stand?

We've always arranged a return time with our driver when he dropped us off. There is no taxi stand there and the only taxi's I've seen are those waiting for arranged return trips.

We are going to Curacao next month. Our ship will dock from 8am to 5pm. This is our first time visit the island. We plan to go to porto marie and also want to tour around the port such the floating market. How long do you suggest to stay in porto marie? Should we tour the town first or go to the beach first? Thanks.

We did this with friends a couple times. We went to the beach first and had the driver pick us up early enough that we'd have a good 2 hours+ before we had to be back on the ship. We had the taxi driver drop us off by the floating bridge and walked into town and then walked back to the ship.

If I'm starting to run late I'd rather be close to the ship then far away - so personally I'd go for the beach first. Only problem is you're then carrying your beach things into town with you and also might have slightly damp swimwear on - although it is hot and dry enough there that I don't remember that being much of an issue.

Lots of differing info here--we leave on Thursday for Friday 12/3 sailing. So, we just like a quiet clean beach--which one? I believe we can walk to Holiday but must take a short cab to Hooks Hut--is there a local bus? We much prefer riding with the locals.

And must we buy a daypass at Holiday or Hooks?

Sea Aquarium, Mambo and Kontiki are basically the same beach /area. They have separate entrances but are on the same strip of beach/water.
I liked it there but it's not great for snorkeling unless you go around the breakwall and that often has some sizeable waves.

For those who want to take a quick FREE swim, and have the opportunity to do some other things in your day, here is a suggestion.
There is a beach that is relatively close to the pier called the Sonesta Beach. (At least that is what is used to be called)
You catch a local bus which are quite reasonably priced, to the "World Trade Center" which is by the Marriott Hotel. A few hundred yards further, at the end of that road, is this cute little beach. It has two sides, a windy and a calm side.
It has some nice snorkeling depending on the wind/wave activity. You can swim from there, into the "beach" of the Mariott which is right beside it. You can't walk from the one to the other because they have a fence and a guard there, usually to keep the locals out. The locals swim at this beach and it has palm trees and some cute little beach huts on it. Check it out on google maps.

Thank you. We carry our own gear as I like the fit of the masks and my own personal snorkel - as opposed to one that's been in someone else's mouth. Sometimes we bring our own fins and sometimes we rent - did each between our two trips to Porto Mari.

One suggestion - for plain swimming bring water shoes. While the beach has nice clean sand it is a little rocky (coral) right at the water line.

Lsimon and Mosetter - Thanks for the tips! We will have our water shoes with us for an excursion on Dominica, so we'll just throw them in the bag for Curacao, too!

I'd love to take our own gear, as that's always better for fit and the idea of not having something in my mouth that's been who knows where! Taking just the snorkel is a good idea ... not sure I can fit fins and everything in our luggage. Still, it's nice to know there's a dive shop if we need it. Thanks!

We were there the same day you were. Yes, it was more crowded than when we were there 10 days earlier. That's because it was Christmas week and everyone was on vacation. Yes, the coral is dead from the hurricane in 2004, but there were still more fish here than at any snorkel spot we were at in the 21 days we were on the cruise. Yes, if you didn't walk over to that one entry spot into the water where there was much less coral to step on then you would have found it uncomfortable to get into the water. All in all, they have sun loungers, shade umbrellas, restrooms, restaurant/bar, showers, and crystal clear water with snorkelling that is less than 8 feet to the ocean floor. We saw lots of flounders, squid, parrot fish, trumpetfish, and dozens of other species. Along the wall behind the beach were many species of iguanas and several types of birds. I'm not claiming it's the best snorkelling ever, but it was a very nice spot and of the 24 people in total who went there on our two visits, every one of them said they had a fabulous day and wished we didn't have to leave.

We took a tour of Curacao and the last stop was Mambo Beach. The tour guide suggested we just exit the tour at this point then take a taxi back. So, we took a very nice tour including the rum factory and city tour for one hour fifteen min for $30/couple. Oneway to or from Mambo is $20/couple. So for $10 more we had a nice tour.

I can't say enough about the beach. When you pull up it is a muddy parking lot (of course they had lots of rain prior to our Arrival) but don't let that turn you away. There is a $3 charge for beach entrance but not with the tour guide as they are there for a bit then leave. Of course, dh and I just stayed so $6 saved there. They have chair rentals for $3/each and plenty of shade trees. There are clean restrooms and a nice place to get some carryout food. Or the servers will come to your chairs. We had some delicious fries for $2.50. Note they provide change in their currency but you can exchange back closer to ship. Of four miracle ports, Curacao was our favorite.

Does Holiday Beach have another name? I'm not finding it on the Curacao website list of beaches.

Does anyone know if its possible to do a day trip to Klein island during a docked day in Curacao? I've heard its a 8 hour trip - with an hour boat travel time there and back.

Does anyone know anything about Cas Abou beach? Looking for something with chair and umbrealla rental, restrooms, and a restaurant. Which beach would be most suitable? Also, I will be using a travel scooter. Thanks.
