View Full Version : Just Had a Thought About Ships in Europe........

I wonder if folks who are currently on Eurodam and other HAL ships heading to Europe (Westerdam ?)are offering cabins for good prices to guests who are already aboard for them to remain for the next sailing?

Seems it could work out well for people who cannot get flights home, seems hard to get hotel rooms and prices are probably very high, they may as well stay aboard and sail the next voyage if they can get a good price.

Guests can't get to the ship and those there can't get home so they might get another week or ten days unplanned days aboard.

My in-laws are on board the Westerdam right now. They didn't have any trouble getting to the embarkation port as it was in the US, but I believe they disembark in Rome, and we don't know yet if they'll have problems getting home. Also don't know if they have insurance. All we can do on our end is be ready to wire money if they need it.

I have wondered too if HAL might not just end up bringing them back to US soil if there are berths available from people who couldn't get to the ship.

Well that would certainly make sense. I would much rather be onboard ship waiting for my opportunity to go home than wait in an airport or who-knows-what kind of hotel.

I think it would be difficult to impossible to determine how many cabins they could re-offer to guests currently onboard. Unless HAL knows for certain that Mr. & Mrs. X will NOT be taking the cruise, there is a possibility that they WILL be taking the cruise. Some pax may have done land tours pre-cruise, some will be coming from Europe thru various means, some likely even live in the port city. Others may have rerouted their air travel.

I guess they could stick everyone in a room someplace, take their names on a "waiting list", and see at sailing time who could be accommodated.

I think the logistics could be a nightmare.

Yes it would be pretty difficult logistics, but having the present passengers debark and wait to see if there is a cabin would work. If I were in that situation I would be willing to be on call to come back to the ship if the alternative would be sitting around at the airport for days!

As far as what we read there is no problem flying back from Rome .It is not one of the impacted airports .

Right. I was thinking that some folks may be delayed, but meet up with the ship later. Unless folks flat out cancelled their cruise ahead of time, that would be logistically cumbersome, waiting to see who would meet the ship at a later port and who would intend to do so, but then give up and cancel half way through the cruise, etc.

I have been checking the flight status to/from Rome (we are flying to Rome May 16 for our cruise on the 19th) and every flight I have checked has arrived. This is to/from the Charlotte airport. Maybe some couldn't get to/from Rome because of the way their flight was routed but there definitely are some routes, like from CLT, that do not appear to be affected.

Princess did that for the passengers that were supposed to disembark at Santiago on March 2. The earthquake prevented many from being able to get there to board and the disembarking passengers couldn't get a flight out or hotel room. They sold the cabins at a greatly reduced price per day to those who needed / wanted to stay onboard. Princess set a good precedent and I'm sure HAL will follow suit.

Not sure if I can go into the specifics or not so I'll err on the side of caution and speak in general terms... but yes, there was a plan put into effect if people wished to stay on for the next cruise

Thanks to those who commented re: Rome. :) We're not sure what their itinerary looks like, but their ultimate destination is CA.

BTW, re: CLT? I fly into CLT on Sat for business in Wadesboro. :)

Passengers on the current Westerdam TransAtlantic cruise are due to disembark in Venice on 4th May. Venice airport has been open for the last 2 days so they should not have a problem.

I have been following the situation very closely as DH and I are due to board the ship on 4th May for the next 2 cruises. We are flying from Brisbane, Australia and are feeling fairly confident that we will make it.

Sure hope so !!!

Back when we had 9/11, many ships were in various ports in Alaska -- and HAL did offer cabins at a reduced rate until things got straightened out.

Not sure if this will post or not, or even be able to be opened; but if it can, it's fabulous.

Off topic, but WOW, DBA......

That's a fabulous line up of cruises you have booked.
Looks like you are coming close to having sailed the whole fleet.

Hope you have many great cruises !!
