View Full Version : Eurodam Cabin J1048 vs an outside cabin? Size?

Our Eurodam cruise on Aug. 19 might be impacted if only because of those who are unwilling to cough up the final payment due June 5 due to the volcanic activity if they don't have insurance, so I'm rethinking the potential of being "upgraded" to an outside stateroom on the same deck (a D cabin from the J1048 that we are now booked in.) I had specifically said "No Upgrades" since I don't want to be on a higher deck or chance a forward cabin (I'm prone to seasickness). I'm now wondering if an outside cabin would be OK "if offered and available."
I've heard these J cabins are very nice and seem roomier than the outside ones according to the sf and deck plans.

This cruise will be in some potential rough water...it's going from A'dam to Endinburgh, the outer islands, Iceland , Greenland, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia before ending in NYC...

I'd love comments from Eurodam cruisers who've been in either the D's and or the J's.
(We've got the insurance so we're "going for it" and hope we can get there...)

I've been in two J-cabins on the Noordam, one on the E-dam, and will (I hope) be in another one on the Westerdam in a couple of weeks.

I love them. The size is generous, especially compared to the inside cabins on other decks. IIRC, there's two inside cabins in the space of three outsides on that deck. There's plenty of walk space heading toward the bathroom, and there is good to very good space by the closets, depending on the placement of the bed.

Ruth, others are adding their hopes to your's...

May you arrive safely to board the Westerdam, and enjoy your cruise.

(There really needs to a "crossed fingers" emoticon for these situations.)

Thank you for saying that.
And I know that if I can get there, it means so many others can get to their destinations, too. That would be so nice.

If it were me, I would stick with J1048 over any outside that lacks a balcony. Those Js are fabulous ... they not only "seem" larger than the outsides across the corridor, they ARE larger than those outsides. And, they have more effective storage space than those outsides (the Eurodam, as is true with the Vistas, is woefully stingy when it comes to storage -- particularly drawer -- space in those outside cabins.)

Unless you're upgrading to a Verandah cabin, or higher, I'd stick with J1048.

I was in E1115 on Oosterdam, and K1116 on Westerdam. The K cabin (same as your J, but further aft) was MUCH more roomy. I loved it! EM

Thanks for the info...Rev. Neal, your previous posts about them were one of the reasons we grabbed one for this trip...thought it would be "cozier" if we got into rough seas...looks like we should stay with it.

Rev...hope your upcoming cruise goes off as planned for you...looks like things SHOULD be getting back to normal...

We are booked into a J 1068 for our upcoming cruise on the Eurodam in May. We also have a VD 4048 category booked. Our three children (ages 19, 17, 10) will be in the J category and we chose it based on the amount of space in these particular rooms. I can take additional photos of the rooms and give our review when we return. I am hopeful the airspace cooperates as we chose not to buy insurance :o

Eurodam - Nov 2008 - J1043
Westerdam - Nov 2009 - J1043
Niew Amsterdam - Dec 2010 J1049

Our group consist of two rooms which is 4 adults + 4 kids (as of Nov 2008, 7M, 2Y, 4Y and 4Y). We get 2 J class rooms next to each other. My sister who has been on Princess and RCL said the HAL J class rooms are bigger than the other lines. We really like our rooms.

#1 cheaper but we don't care. This way we can still pay 2 private school tuitions and travel 3x/year. We all eat the same foods and use the same public areas anyway.

#2 spacious enough for the 4 of us, lots of cabinets and shelf space. We keep everything nice and tide and in its place (even with 2 toddlers). My sister even has a crib in her J room. Bathroom two mirror cabinets to put your beauty supplies and I like the shelf under the sink to hold bath items, sand castle building plastic toy things, wet Crocs etc.

#3 completed dark, great for naps so bring a night light.

#4 we had a king bed (or was it queen?). young daughter slept in the pull out. DH, DS and I slept on the big bed, sometimes I'll use the bunk bed.

#5 like the middle of the ship location. Easy to get to where the tenders are - walk down one flight. Easy to get to the MDR, walk up one flight in the main staircase. Easy to get to the lounge where they have their shows. We only used the elevators to get to the Lido (Floor 9) and Club Hal (Floor 10 - actually elevator to 9 and walk up one flight)

Granted if someone gave us a suite for free, we would take it but if we had to pay for an upgrade and in a different location, definitely not. We like our cozy little room and it is enough for our little family.

BTW....no tub, just shower. Big enough for me and my child at the same time - granted I'm only 5'2 and have a toddler with me but not big enough for 2 adults at the same time. If you want a hand shower, you have to request it in advance with your booking people. We always request so we can shower down the kids.
