Is there any reason one can't drag a chaise over to the shade from that line of trees on the island rather than renting a clam shell? I really don't like those clam shell thingies.

You can move a chaise, but that might not get you shade. As the day goes on the sun moved toward the beach and water. It shines down toward the trees, with you in between.
There are some hammocks in the trees, too. They may provide some shade even in the late morning/afternoon.

HMC lost a lot of shade trees a few years ago during the hurricanes.

We were at HMC in December. We were off the ship by 830, and the beach was cool and shady. However, by 1130 or so, the sun has moved and the trees that are still there provide no shade due to the location and angle of the sun. The few hammocks we saw were all occupied. We found that was a good time to have the barbeque lunch at the very shady pavillion. A quick snorkel , and we were back on the ship. Unless you rent a cabanna or a clamshell, I can't imagine staying in the sun all afternoon, but many do. If your cruise also takes you to Grand Turk, as ours did, you will find a much shadier beach most all day.

Hello SeaBunny...so nice to see you again. I cruised with you on The Miracle on 08...you my dear may drag that darn thing where ever you want I'm sure no one will stop you...I still have the treasure you and your husband gave me..

If you walked down to the "green" cabana there is a lovely spot just beside that cabana, with a hammock etc and shade.. I've seen it on photos.

I looked for everyone I met at the meet and greet, but could barely have time to sit on our lovely aft balcony we were kept so busy busy on that cruise..I'll never go with a big big group again...we played bingo until 4, the casino tournaments etc..group events..it was fun..:)

I am booked on the Nieuw Amesterdam Eastern Caribbean Feb. 06/ll...with just my daughter and I..we have rented every cabana going, she is very fair skinned and will burn if out in the sun too long but loves the beach..

How have you been you look as beautiful as ever..

 By the afternoon there is no way to drag chairs back to the shade. Shade is at a premium on this beach.

If HMC is a last stop you are probably already sun burned. Would advise the glass bottom boat and then returning for lunch in the MDR.

Hello there! Glad that you enjoyed your first cruise enough to go again. I seem to recall you were a bit apprehensive. Maybe we'll cruise together again soon.

Unless you get there very early, you won't be able to drag a chair anyplace because they are lined up, side by side and rows with people using them. Don't know how you'd move one at that point without stepping on and over people. BTW I didn't think I'd enjoy a clamshell when i saw what the thing looked like but I was sooooo wrong. Happy Sailing!

Shade is quite limited at HMC. If it is a bad hurricane season, there is even less shade.

I never considered using the clamshell because I always thought that it would hold in the heat. Since you changed your mind about them...what can you tell me??

I don't know what month you will be sailing, but my experience was in November. I had heard that it was very hot in the clamshell and people used books and things to prop the back open for air. We did not have that experience, but I'm sure weather and time of year make a difference. I actually enjoyed the clamshell, the chairs were comfy and it was nice to get out of the heat and into cool shade. For the price, it was well worth it. We got off the ship early and had our pick of location. I would rent one again if I'm ever on HMC. Do you have any specific questions? Happy Sailing!

We had been twice to HMC and both times rented a clamshell. We only stay on the beach until lunch time - offer it to someone who is lounging on a chaise close by and leave for the barbeque - after which we return to the ship. The clamshell is well worth the small amount HA charge. The variety of trees on the island do not afford much shade and I try and stay out of the sun as much as I can. People drag the chaises in every which direction - either to catch the sun - or to avoid it!

I've been to HMC twice. Both times in December (2007 and 2008) and both times we had picture postcard weather. Our first time, not knowing what to expect, we rented a clamshell but soon abandoned it. We just walked down the beach away from most of the crowds (there were two ships that day) and found a spot under some trees. There were plenty of chaises to move to whatever position you wanted. The second visit we didn't bother with clamshell and again, as long as you can walk a little bit on the beach or walkway, you should have no problem. Now, if you absolutely shouldn't be in the sun due to a medical condition, then HMC probably isn't for you.
