From Aug.17 till Aug. 21 2005 the big event "Sail Amsterdam" takes place.
Many old (sailing)ships will attend and all kinds of shows, fireworks etc. will take place.

If you are on the sailing of August 23 ex Amsterdam it might be worth to come to the city a few days earlier.

Thanks for the wonderful information! Sadly, we leave Amsterdam on the 9th but I know there are others that will be in town and will want to book hotels now, as I would think the town would be full for an event like that!

Great, we debark from the Prinsendam in Amsterdam on July 26. As we return home by train, we have some hours to kill. Might be an interesting thing to do.

Is there a website where I can find more informations?

Ah, I somehow misread the first post. Thought it says it starts July 17...
But it is obviously not the case....

Ine,

Thanks so much for the information. Can you offer any other details?

We will be sailing on the Maasdam from Rotterdam on August 18, 2005 and plan to arrive in Rotterdam on the 15th or 16th from Paris and are in the process of planning how to occupy our time for two or three days precruise.

Thanks!

Oops! Sorry for the last post. I just realized that I was thinking of the termination date of the cruise in Boston. The cruise leaves Rotterdam on August 2nd. Another "senior moment".

I think you will stay in a hotel in Rotterdam (Hotel New York?)
The city center is rather modern since it suffered a lot during WWII. Therefore it is totally different from e.g. Amsterdam.
There are some nice boattrips through the harbor etc. www.spido.nl (http://www.spido.nl)

Also you can go by train to the old city of Delft which has a real nice old center and you can visit Porceleyen Fles for Delft Blue http://www.royaldelft.com/index.cfm?

Also the village of Kinderdijk whre many windmills are is worth a visit. I think there is a ferry going that way or you make book a tour.

Have fun.

I seem to have PC problems getting into the board, it seems I cannot post my answers sometimes.
Therefore my reply takes a little longer or doesnot get into the board.

Lucky us...we are sailing on the Prinsendam on August 23 and will be arriving in Amsterdam on the 20th. Thanks Ine for the wonderful information as we have been busy reading travel books on Amsterdam and Holland. We will also be in Amsterdam for three days on the post cruise end so if you can think of any excursions to other cities, please let me know. My E-Mail is karenjburnham@hotmail.com. Happy New Year!

There is another thread regarding hotels in amsterdam in which I gave some threads with info. (like http://www.vvvamsterdam.nl/)

Also very nice to visit is Zaanse Schans, which you can easily visit by train.
This is not a real museum since people live in the houses. But you can see how ao "klompen" clogs are made, visit a small cheese-factory, see the 1st Albert Heyn (now part of AHOLD) store, clockmuseum, a dressmuseum various still working windmills (mustard, paint etc.) all along river Zaan. A boattrip over the river is also possible. Many things are outside, so you better hope the weather is o.k. Take the "stop"trein into direction Alkmaar, get off at Koog-Zaandijk. From there it is abt. 10 minutes walk, easy to find.
Guess where the name Zaandam (HAL-ship) came from?

Of course as mentioned the old city of Delft (Delft Blue at Porceleyne Fles)
http://www.royaldelft.nl/ or
The city of The Hague with the Peacepalace and the searesort of Scheveningen. Or maybe a combination of this.
