I am going on a cruise (finally booked it) and need a reasonable hotel (by reasonable I mean with a/c, clean and comfortable) not too far from the pier and close to the Ramblas.

Three years ago stayed at the Le Meridian. Can't remember the address, but about 50 yards off a side street from the Ramblas. Quiet, but very convenient. I am VERY CONFIDENT that this hotel would meet your needs. From the hotel to the pier is about a mile. I also believe they may have a web site or the Le Meridian chain has a web site that you can then go to this particular hotel. Enjoy Barcelona. Fabulous city!!!

I am not sure exactly what you consider 3 star. The Meridian (previous post) certainly would be a 4 or even 5 star with prices to match,, but it does have a great location on the Ramblas. For a genuine 3 star (European standards) I would recommend the Hotel Colon. Its located in the Gothic Quarter (a short stroll from the Ramblas) in an ideal location. This hotel is very friendly to American travelers, and the rooms are all air conditioned. As to being close the pier, keep in mind that the pier is across the bay from the Ramblas and downtown area. All the hotels are going to be a short cab ride ($5 - 10) from the pier. I agree that being close to the Ramblas should be a priority.

We were referred to the NH Calderon, which is a relatively well priced 4 star hotel, north of Plaza Catalunia . There is a web site for NH hotels.

Ouch! The low value of the dollar sure has pushed hotel prices up. We have stayed at the Rivoli Ramblas ( presently $160 a night on Hotels.com) and the Millineum ($ 250 ) both are very nice and right on the Ramblas. Given the price difference the Rivoli would be my pick.
Be sure to stock up on wine at the super market across the street. You can save $20 a bottle over the onboard price.

I would second the Colon Hotel recommendation. If available and you request they have rooms facing the old gothic cathedral with a beautiful view.

Another vote for the Colon. La Ramblas is only about 2 blocks away down a street lined with shops. The hotel has dining out front on the sidewalk overlooking the public square and the Cathedral http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Enjoy your stay in Barcelona!

We stayed at the Hotel Rialto in 2002. Great location in the Gothic Quarter right on Carrer Ferran which leads directly to the La Ramblas a couple blocks away. Clean, well kept 3 star. We paid around $116/night back then, I'm sure more today.
Another hotel I read alot about (positively) is the Regencia Colon, right behind the Hotel Colon and I believe owned by the same company, but less grand with less grand prices. We had friends who stayed at the Hotel Colon and enjoyed it very much!
Good Luck. My experience is that hotels in Barcelona book up fast so don't wait too long!

Ditto Joe's comment to book fast - the Hotel Colon was booked three or four months before our planned stay - must have been from these blasted Cruise Critic members!!! :-) We found the Hotel Continental Palacette just to the north of Plaza Catalunya (the head of Las Ramblas). Their website is www. hotelcontinental. com.

drwong, did you stay at the Continental Palacete, or have you booked it for a future stay?
I'm interested because we are staying there in August and I'm reading everything I can about it.

We have also booked in the Continental Palacete. I know we have air conditioning in this one but am concerned about the small rooms at the back. There have been some negative comments about them...especially those with the "air shaft" in them??? You are right though in saying that hotels are booking up very quickly and most hotels are certainly a lot more expensive than the board people quote from previous years.

You might try the Hotel Montcada. We just booked for late October and very reasonable (from $160US per night). It is a few blocks from La Rambla and received excellent reviews from tripadvisor.com. Opt for the bigger rooms however.
