Since cell phone communication is not an option (I read about the fees!), I thought I might bring a few clip magnets and paper/pen as a way of keeping track of my crew.

Will a magnet stick?

I am on the Volendam.

Thanks!

Evey ship that I have been on and used a magnet on the door - It has worked. But I always bring scotch tape - haven't needed it for a door.

You could try walkie-talkies, too.

Have fun,
MaryAnn

Last year, I took a magnetic photo frame to put on our door, but it wouldn't stick at all. (Amsterdam)

On the Zuiderdam last September the doors weren't metal. The door frames were.

Down in the "cheap seats" each cabin has a mail slot sort of thing about eye level beside the door where the ads from the Spa, the shorex people, etc, get stuffed and you collect them when you return to your cabin. When travelling with friends in other cabins, we leave notes for each other in that slot. Not sure if the "fancy addresses" onboard have this or not.

We always bring magnets to post invitations, schedules & notes on the cabin walls. In fact, Alaska is where I buy the hematite magnets I prefer, and we plan to get more this trip.

The rims of the doors will probably hold magnets -thedoors themselves -- no. There is either a mail-box or a clip attached to the wall next to each door for leaving messages - an easy way to communicate.

Magnets are very hit or miss sooo...

We have used these Scotch removable hooks for door wreaths and other decorations:

As well as these "Super Sticky" Post-it Notes:

Post-its, as mentioned, certainly stick to the doors; once our door was cleaned as part of a routine hall cleaning. When the door was dry the post-it I had been using on the door was replaced so someone took the trouble to save it and bring it back.

For door decorations (which I love to do!) I have a long length of ribbon (I used one of those cheap spools of ribbon that you get at Joanne's Crafts; I think it's about 14-16 feet long. I got a quarter-inch strip of elastic, about 2 feet or so long, and sewed it to the ribbon to make a loop. This slips over the door top to bottom and I staple or sew the decorations onto the loop. Easy on, easy off. And easy to change what's on it for a trip at a different season.

Or for Christmas, bring a length of package ribbon and tie it around the door just like the door is a box. You can clip a wreath or something into the place where the ribbon crosses in the front and you'd tie a bow or something.

Our cabin neighbors tell me that they can look down the hall and know which direction their cabin is because they can see the decoration that they know is on a nearby door. (Long corridors, sometimes you're not real sure exactly which elevator/stairs you took to get there!)

[B]HAL kindly has mail boxes for all the cabins. Everyone gets ship's mail in those boxes.

Your cabin has an answering machine on its telephone. You can record messages on it that your friends can call and hear from any house phone on the ship.

Well, your two best options would be for each member of the "crew", including yourself, to have a two-way radio ("walkie-talkies") at hand for instant communication and/or leave a voice mail message on the stateroom 'phone!:)
And yes, a magnet would stick.

To communicate with members of your party in your room or the room steward, use window markers. You can write on the mirrors and it is easily removed.

Post it's work great for me, I can leave one on a friends door, or leave a post it for my cabin steward, if I need extra towels, or a light is burned out or something. I always take them when I travel, now.
