Anna,
I recommend a day tour to Chichen Itza. We booked a small van tour (10 people) through our hotel and had a wonderful day seeing the ruins. A day at X-Caret (a nature park with a beach, underground river to float, and folkloric shows) was also great fun for us. We also booked that through our hotel in Cancun. There is also a fun restaurant to eat in downtown, but I can't think of it right now. If you are staying on the 'strip' in Cancun, it is easy to take the city bus to downtown (there is a Wal-Mart there for buying last minute items or cheap snacks). It is best to have exact changes for the bus as they only give you change if they happen to have it.

First let me say Anna, that your city of Barcelona is probably the most beautiful city in Europe. We have just returned from our second trip and absolutely loved it.
It has been many years since I have been in Cancun but here are some highlights of what I remember: Day tour to Tuluum to tour the ruins etc. Also Xel-Ha (sp?) lagoon is a nice place to snorkel. You can go into a cave and see cave paintings etc. We rented a car and drove to the two places rather than take a tour. It was very easy and the road was good. You can do both in one day if you like. Have a great time!

Anna,
Thanks for all of your help concerning Barcelona on these boards!
We have been in Cancun twice. Definitely go to Chichen Itza! We rented a car for the 4 of us. We drove and came back in 1 day. It probably would have been easier to take a van from a booth in the hotel. Tulum (the ruins near Playa Del Carmen) are beautiful since they are right on the coast. We took a boat to Isla Mujeres for shopping and snorkeling. We also took the ferry from Playa del Carmen to go to the island of Cozumel for the day. There is a fun restuarant in the Flamingo shopping center where the waiters carry drinks on their heads. Fun for the kids and adults alike. I can't remember the name, but it is like the one in New Orleans. Senior Frogs also is fun for the kids for dinner if you go early before the real rowdy crowd comes for dancing. The beaches are beautiful and it is a great place to relax!
Have fun!

We did two weeks on the Mexican Riveria last year instead of a cruise, we had a great time. We went to Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, took the ferry to Cozumel, Xel-ha, didn't make Xcaret, but heard it was great. The bus service is wonderful, very safe and very cheap. Have a great time.

Good for you, Anna! Here we are in Southern California and I've only been to one place in Mexico and that was Cozumel, so I'm sorry I can't help on Cancun.

You don't happen to be stopping in California, do you?! If so, we're here for you!!!! I can get to LAX in around an hour with no problem! Just let me know!

Many many thanks for all your replies.

Nanette
We will go directly from Madrid to Cancun and we will stay in a hotel close to tha Xcaret park, it's a pitty beacause we have never travel to the US and I am sure it's a wonderful country.
I hope to visit your country within four years because it will be my silver wedding and then we will spend all our summer holidays (3 weeks)to do a USA coast to coast.
So, for the moment we must wait till your visit to Barcelona to know each other.
Once again many tahnks for your kindness
Best regards / Anna

Anna, 4 years will pass quickly! We would love to help you plan the west coast portion of your trip! By the way, is there anything "American" that your kids would like us to bring? Please let us know!

Any news on the Lirica? I hope they are working on it! Are you taking the kids to Mexico? So you've been married 21 years? We're going on 29 in July.

When I read that your 18 year old daughter likes to go to clubs at 11:00, I felt terrible that this will be our first big trip without our almost 24 year old son! He probably would have had the best time seeing Barcelona with your daughter!!! Maybe another year!
