My family is interested in taking a cruise on the Navigator for a major event and would like to make sure we can get a nice family photo out of it. I read in Frommer's Alaska Ports of Call 2010 that there wasn't a photographer. It would be hard of course to get a family photo without a photographer
Thanks in advance for your time.

Regent did away with the ship's photographer about a year or so ago. I think overwhelming opinion was that folks didn't like them, and I guess they weren't selling many photos.
But it does make it awkward. I think they should have occasions with some nice back drop where staff members could offer to take photos with your own camera. I think you're stuck asking other passengers to take your pictures. At least you won't pay for them!

Wendy. Thanks for the info. It isn't what I wanted to hear, but it is always good to know the facts. Indi

Wow - that's so interesting. In May we were on the Mariner & while I really mostly decline any ship's photographer's offer of a photo, there were a couple times when I was wishing for one.
I figured it was just the 'luck of the draw' that we didn't encounter one, but so good to know there ISN'T one! lol
I imagine there is a way to set up a photo ahead of time though, given that we were able to arrange audio/visual support from crew for a group presentation. Not sure, but worth looking into. :]

You can count us among those who are very happy that Regent have dropped the photographers, but for those who need one, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't possible to get help from other passengers or crew when needed.
The various lines and delays caused by the official photographers on cruises are something we are grateful not to have to endure on Regent now, but we'd happily help out for anyone in need.

I have found that depending on the staff, many are happy to take snapshots. Some of the staff are hobbyists. I am a professional photographer and have had many conversations with other passengers about photography and have taken photos for fellow travellers. Of course, you can also commission a photographer on land in port to create a family portrait for you. Some photographers would even consider travelling with you as your personal photographer

You could also hire a photographer in port to do a family portrait. There are some in Anchorage that I could refer to you or in Vancouver on the other end. Wedding and Portrait photographers even at a distance meet at the local conventions, workshops and seminars. Heather Dunn is in Wasilla and works in Anchorage and Mark Budworth of Softlight Photography is in North Vancouver. Both are excellent.

When are you going to do the same cruise that we are on? Not for your photographer skills, but, just to be on the same ship at the same time (along with our mutual friends that we have yet to cruise with). Have you considered the crossing on the Voyager next year (November 28th?)
