OK this question is not quite about cruising but I will be seeing the Oosterdam in port in San Diego.

Here's my question, I am going to fly down to San Diego tomorrow to see DH since he is still owrking down there might not be home for another 2 weeks unknow right now. His hotel the Hampton Inn offers free WiFI so I thought I would bring my laptop out to try it out and see how much of a hassle it is to drag it around traveling before we go on the Westerdam in 7 weeks I do not plan to check in my small suite case that fits over heard and I will have my laptop but I normally would also have my purse. I know that there are signs all over for only 2 carryons. Will this be a problem and I will be forced to check in my Luggage or should I just put my wallet in my Lap Top case and pack my Fanny Pack to use as a purse when I am out and about in San Diego? Any suggestions from those travelers that bring their lap tops?
Thanks for your help:)

You will be fine with your laptop. They are exempt from the 2 carry on limit.......jean

Really, Jean? I didn't know that. I really believed that (at least on AA), they counted laptop as one piece. That is great to know.

I air travel quite a bit and have never had a problem bringing on a laptop and carryon.

You need to know that you will be required to take your laptop out of the carrying case and boot it up as you go through security. So you don't want to have to much packed in the carrying case that would hinder you from getting it out in a timely manner. You might think about just using a fanny pack and not bothering with a purse (leave at home). I didn't take my laptop on the ship, but I have traveled with it. I love having it. I use to carry discs and floppies, but have switched to the "thumb" drives and that is even more convenient.
Have fun in San Diego. Weather should be great.

According to the FAA you are allowed one carry-on and one "personal item". The personal item would include a purse, briefcase, laptop, small backpack, etc. Therefore you are only allowed two items, an actual carry-on and one personal item. Hope this helps.

Slip the laptop into the outer pocket of your roll-on bag. Whether or not they'll count a roll-on, laptop carrier and purse as three carryons depends on a number of factors including airline, frequent flyer status/cabin class - and the size of the purse!

Of course, things can always vary but the "rules" for most flights are one carry on (appropriate size) and either a purse, laptop, small backpack or larger camera case. I have repeatedly seem them require folks to consolidate in two cases, while some flights they board like pack mules. How big the second case can be seems to be a function of the personnel working at the time and the capacity of the plane. I have also been on serveral flights that folks were required to "gate check" their carryon bags due to limited overhead space. These are just my observations from international and domestic flights.

Male logic/suggestion: pack an empty purse in your suitcase and carry your laptop in a seperate carry-on case w/a fanny pack for ID, etc. I know my DW would reject this idea in a heartbeat, but what the heck!

My experience has been that if the 2nd and/or 3rd "personal item" will fit under the seat in front of you, the airline (assuming SW) will not give you any grief.

Going through security at McCarran, they have never booted up our laptops. but you will have to put it in one of those gray bins by itself.

Say "hi" to Tom and have a great time!

Thanks Bill, Thanks everyone else too:) yes it is Southwest. I think I will pack my Fanny Pack (to use as a purse) while in San Diego and put my ID, Credit card and cash in my Lap Top Case. So that way I will only have my Lap Top Case and my carry on luggage. I am figuring this will be a try run for flying to FLL in March. Although that will be TED aka United and I will have DH with me but it will be good practice.:D I was even thinking taking the camera to take pictures of Dave's Bon Voyage on the Oosterdam. One more thing to take for a less than 48 hour trip:eek:

Will the picture be with or without the suspenders? :D

They aren't suspenders... I think dave explained this once on another thread - they are straps to a backpack, if I recall correctly.

Got it. Never do a walking tour without the backpack (binoculars, sunscreen, guide book, change of clothes, snack food, aspirin, and more!) I have to carry all that because DW's backpack is taken up with camera bodies, camera lenses, memory cards, filters, and bunches of stuff I don't even know the use of!

Rita: I'd never wear braces over a jumper! (American: I'd never wear suspenders over a sweater!):)
