I have only purchased wine packages on the day of embarkation. They often present it as if it is on sale, but likely not. Does anyone know if it is more/less expensive to pre-purchase wine from the HAL web site, or is it the same price as that charged at time of embarkation?

We had fixed dining on our Eurodam Baltic cruise last summer and on a whim I ordered a wine card from the steward that served us every night.
To my way of thinking, we got better pours and better service than on previous cruises when I presented a card ordered online. Who knows?

If you don't mind me asking, what is a wine card? What do you get and approximately what is the cost?

The wine cards are slowly being phased out. Some ships don't even sell it any more. But it is still available for sale on HAL's website -- and is still being honored on all ships. The wine card is for house wine only -- Coastal Vintners. You get a 4 ounce pour.

House wine card -- 10 glasses for $41.40

House wine card -- 20 glasses for $77.63

One drawback to ordering online / in advance is that the prices are presented in the currency of your account (so if you are Canadian, you get HAL's new and improved 15% currency mark-up -- which is better than the 20% they try for on cabin pricing :D)

We usually order the wine Navigator package, and online prices are 135,70$, 228,85$, and 309,35$ for the three, five, and seven bottle packages respectively versus what KK has listed in her post.

Which of the champagnes are considered better than average. I don't want anything too sweet.

For a not-too-sweet champagne, "brut" is the key word. 2 good middle of the road champagnes are Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut and Moet et Chandon Brut Imperial. Domain Chandon Classic Brut is also a very good domestic sparkling wine. (It can only be called champagne if it is from the Champagne region of France). If you want to go up in price, Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label is excellent.
