This topic has come up from time to time on this board as many cruisers sail on Silversea on itineraries in various parts of the world and have questions with respect to using their cell and smart phones. This doesn't tell you everything you want to know but it does give some information along with a few suggestions. The article is from the New York Times.

That was helpful; thank you for posting.
I have an iPhone and called AT&T about what to do. They recommended turning off the data retrieval settings to avoid all the downloads for apps and other downloads. I decided not to get the international roaming package because I do not anticipate that it will make much of a difference to me (I don't plan on many calls). Now I'll have to see if my choice worked to avoid excess costs on the trip I will be taking to Europe later this week.

When we travel we also are sure that the international roaming is turned off on the iPhone and have had no problems. If you want to make any international calls be sure that they know that you want international calling. If you make a lot of calls then you can add the additional international service with the additonal monthly fee as it lowers the per minute charge from most countries and then when we get home we remove that. But if we don't plan to make too many calls we just stick with the international calling but we do not get the extra plan.
