We were on the 1/5 to 1/15/05 cruise. I loved all the Signature of Excellence additions, especially the new mattresses. We were on this same ship the same time last year and my only complaint was the dreadful mattress in my room.
This was our first experience with the new tipping policy and I must say that I didn't notice any significant difference in service. It is true that the dining room waiters and busboys seemed busier, but it looked as if the head waiters were taking up the slack. The head waiters were the ones who kept our beverages filled. In past cruises, the head waiters never graced our table until the last night. I'm glad they are helping.
We were in cabin 6209 and it was a good location. I was on tour with a lady staying in cabin 6117 who told me that due to a design problem, all the water from deck washing came down on her balcony and there was two foot of water there every morning. She said they would come and clean it up every day, but said little could be done to prevent it. I'm sure that was inconvenient for her!
We enjoyed our cruise just as much as last year. The Volendam is a great ship!
