I have observed the Fed Ex people set up in the lower atrium at the end of a cruise. I have not checked them out or compated the prices of shipping items direct from ship using them
I am looking for info from people who have done this. Is the pricing comparable to normal Fed Ex shipping? I am trying to compare using that service to the cost of extra bags on the airlines.

Hi Karen,
I have used FedEx shipping on several cruises. It is really convenient on both ends of the cruise. They pick up your bags at your home several weeks before the cruise and can return them to your home about a week after the cruise lands. It is available for all Grand Voyages. I don’t know about intermediate length cruises and I have never seen them on shorter, say one week, cruises
The cost has been varying but I believe it is somewhere around $2.25 a pound. This is a bit more expensive than taking the bags on a plane, but considerably more convenient.
Going to the ship, you must use make arrangements through Holland America because otherwise, there is no one to receive the packages. Coming home on international cruises, you pick up your luggage in the terminal as usual and go through customs. Then, as soon as you’re through customs, there is a FedEx truck there to take your luggage. I have never tried using the FedEx truck without arranging the shipping home through HAL bit it might be possible and would probably be cheaper.
I hope this helps.

Don't know about shorter cruises, but complimentary shipment of 2 bags PP (both ways) by FedEx was a nice "perk" I received for booking by June 30th for the September GV. I am a "DD." Classes BC or higher were given "unlimited." Cabin classes FF-MM would be charged $2.25/lb.
HAL sent detailed instructions with the letter about visas, etc. I was instructed to call HAL's luggage department to make arrangements. Of course, 2 bags wasn't going to get it with me for 69 days so I will pay $2.25/lb for the 3rd bag.
I think it's the best perk I could ever want. I can't imagine schlepping 3 big suitcases from SC to Seattle, especially solo.

Hi Mary Ellen,
You can really thank your TA for the two bag shipping perk because IIRC HAL doesn't offer it with a DD cabin and doesn't offer anything for booking 86 days early on a Grand Voyage. HAL does offer a discount of three percent of a Grand Voyage price for paying in full 120 days before sailing.
So give your TA a big hug for the perk.

someone on this board took the 'unlimited' to heart. they shipped a recliner. i forget who it was, but they even had photos to prove it. too funny.

Thanks for your responses but this is not what I was talking about. I know about the Fed Ex bag shipping at $2.25 lb...(that is WAAAY to pricey for me at $112 for one 50 lb bag!)
I was referring to the BOX shipping they have set up in the lower atrium the last few days of a Grand Voyage. There is a Fed Ex rep there (who gets on at the last port before home...Honolulu in my last case) and sets up to ship boxes for people. They have the boxes there and you pack them and ship them. It is THESE rates I was curious about.
