Back today from a Pre-Cruise Denali trip and a week on the Navigator (8/4 southbound sailing)
Our entire trip was handled by Regent. Our Alaska bound air was on Alaska Air. The flight was comfortable and the pre-reserved individual video/entertainment players were terrific. Alaska Air also guarantees you will have your luggage quickly and that was definitely the case.
Arriving in Anchorage- we were met by the cruise-tour agents—Premier—which is a sub contractor of Regents. Overall during our four days in Denali, the tour leader and bus driver were terrific. Our leader did an amazing job of detailing the history, culture, economy, wildlife, politic etc etc. The bus driver kept the coach comfortable, clean and on schedule.
Upon arriving in Anchorage, we were transferred with luggage to the hotel--we stayed at the Sheraton. The rooms were comfortable and check in with the information on baggage (some was stored until ship time—some went with us), ground transfers, itinerary etc. Food at the Sheraton (dinner) was disappointing; however the Sheraton breakfast was much better.
The pre-cruise tour was excellent. Just terrific. We spent a bit of time on a very nice motor coach—then transferred to the observation lounge cars of the train. The meal on the train was sufficient. Hotel in Denali was at the Grande. It was more rustic. The views were lovely. The food ranged from amazing to average..as did the service. We were very pleased and appreciated everything the staff did to make us feel welcome. The tour of Denali park was on a bus—with upholstered/fitted individual seats—so when someone says it’s a school bus—that is not quite right. The tour lasts about 8 hours however—it feels like it flies by—we saw so many different species of animals—bears, moose, caribou, dal sheep etc etc..and the guide was a state park officer—very knowledgeable. We did an extra add-on and would absolutely recommend a flight seeing tour of Denali (the mountain) It is spectacular.
The last day is spent heading south again—and included a stop for pictures of McKinley, a visit to a dog sledding training center etc and then a night at a fabulous resort/spa. The rooms and food at this resort are just outstanding!
Embarkation was smooth and worry free. Our luggage arrived very quickly and with no problems. Our suites were very nice, clean and well appointed. Our steward was attentive without being smothering. We asked for some changes to what was stocked in the fridge—it was all done by mid morning of the first day. Meals in the ships restaurants were very nice. Overall we were quiet pleased with the food and service—We took advantage of all of the various venues including tea, the caviar experience, etc in the Navigator Lounge, and ate regularly at La Veranda and Compass Rose. We ate outside at the Grill once and enjoyed it—and part of our group regularly used room service and was quite happy.
We attended a few shows and found them fine. We also did some shopping on the ship—making use of ship-board credits. Part of our group used the salon facilities—though another member of the group could not get an appointment as they had all been booked very early in the cruise.
Disembarkation was easy--we took the Regent coach to the airport and easily made our flights. Regent book our returning air on American.
Rather than go on and on—please ask if you have a specific question. We would absolutely recommend Regent and the Navigator.

Leaving this Saturday for my precruise Denali then cruise. Did u have to leave some luggage behind that was sent to the ship during Denali tour?

Panic mode is setting in regarding packing. Worried about packing too much, too little.... Did u use laundry onboard?

Did u enjoy your excursions?

Thanks, Sue

We are following your itinerary, but it will not be until 2011. However, we are hoping that things next year are similar to what you experienced. Were you told in advance how to pack for the pre-cruise tour or did you have to re-arrange your stuff after you arrived? Did you do your flight-seeing during "free time" and were there other options for extra tours? Is there anything you wished you had done but didn't? We will be anxiously awaiting your reply! Thanks again.

i did the same tour last summer- loved it-

luggage wise- we packed four suitcases- two for each of us- one each for the land tour and one each for the cruise- we left the two for the cruise at the hotel and they transfered it to the ship. so just pack what you want for the land tour in one suit case and cruise stuff in another suitcase

i did use the self-serve laundry facilities while on the ship- was crowded- only had 4 washers and driers (i think) the big issue was people would start a load and go off and leave it unattended and not come back in a timely fashion to switch wash. very rude i thought

when we boarded the bus for the land tour- the guide passed out a list of optional excersions to do- my husband did the flight over mt mckinley (loved it) we wanted to do a jet boat trip but the water level was to low

hope this helps

There are 8 washers and 8 dryers. Two each on decks 11, 9, 8, 5.

If people leave their stuff in the washer or dryer after the cycle has finished, I just take it out and put it in a basket. Others have done this for me when I lost track of time, and it is totally fine.

Luggage
We did one bag for two people for the Denali and one bag for two for the cruise.
The bags were tagged differently while at the hotel in Anchorage. The bag tagged for the ship is stored for a week--the bag for Denali rides the bus up to the Denali hotel and is in your room when you arrive there.

Laundrey
We used the machines on board. Only issue is if another passenger leaves their stuff for a long time. I would fold dried clothes and leave them on the counter. If stuff was wet, I would put it in a dryer --or restart the dryer if it was too damp... While I didn't like having to fold another stuff--its much nicer than finding your clothes wet on a counter! I ran into a couple of oler ladies who had taken someone elses stuff out wet--and left it on the counter!

Sightseeing
We did the optional flight tour offered by the Regent agent/Premier. It was while in Denali and was in the afternoon during the free time. We realize that you can opt to do these things independently- however enjoyed having things detailed/handled by the responsible Regent agent.

Kids
I should mention there were 510- pax on board this past week--and the Regent agent told my husband 70 of them were under 18. While we notticed them from time to time--in general it was not an issue. In fact we noted more rudeness from adults (note laundrey comment above--) Another good example--we took a flight seeing/crab feast tour. One woman was there taking lots of smoked salmon on an appetizer plate (her second helping) before the last 4 of use had even gotten our first taste! We also saw a guy illegally filming the Cirque show --- for the most part any "bad" ahvior we saw was by adults...

Excursions:
We wished we had been on the flight (helo) and dogsledding trip. Our excursion was cancelled due to weather on the glacier...that was a disappoinment--
We hear it was "the best" excursion from those who did the same itinerary we did...So if you can book that--do it.

Flight/crab feast...was a disappointment. While the meal was fine--the flight was fine -however short. Its a one way with a bus and the other way by plane.

We absolutley recommend the flight seeing to Denali as the add on. We did the plane not the helicopter--as the helicopter will take you on a tour of the park if the mt is not available (weather) The plane is an all or nothing--meaning if they fly--you see Denali--If they don't fly- then you pay nothing.

Whale Watching- Was absolutely worth it--we saw several humpbacks with full breaching etc --it was amazing and fun.

Zip line was fun--it was one of the free excursions. We had a nice time and three of the four of us are in shape--For the one out of shape--it was still doable.

We heard about the Jet boat near Alyeska--we heard it was amazing--they went up the river to a glacier and had a fabulous time. Had we known it went to the galcier--we would have done that too.

Alyeska- The food at this resort was fabulous. Had an amazing Kobe steak for dinner.

I am glad to hear that Alyeska continues to improve. The first time we were there, it was not good--very mediocre food, rude staff. But I had to go to a meeting that was held there 2 years later, and it was way better. So much that we returned again. I think the management changed completely between the 1st and 2nd visit.

Where did u eat while in Alyeska? Thinking about eating at the top of the mountain. If u ate here, did u need reservations?

Love reading about your trip. Will be there soon!!

Jack Spratt is a wonderful restaurant that is just down the road from the Alyeska. Well within walking distance and absolutely delicious.
The restaurant at the top of the chair lift is pretty good--prices are high to match the elevation. You would definitely need reservations. We usually eat there once per trip.

We eat at Jack Spratt at least 2-3 times each visit. It is that good, and reasonably priced.

Do not eat at the hotel restaurant in the main part of Alyeska. Mediocre at best. There is much better food and service found elsewhere.

We tried to get reservations at the Seven Glaciers the day before we arrived--and couldn't get a table--so I am surprised to see a poster saying they got a table upon checkin--perhaps because we wanted a table for 5? idk

You do need reservations. I had planned to make a reservation weeks ahead of time -however our party of five couldn't decide....

In the end, We ate in the bar next to restaurant at the resort. We ordered from the restaurant menu...the scallops special app was fabulous and the Kobe steak was a wonderful piece of beef--(cooked perfectly--we like them pretty rare-med-we all had a great meal. The staff was wonderful--very very accomodating.

Breakfast the next day was nice--a full buffet with plenty of choices.

While there it was rainy--and had been a long day...so a martini and steak was just perfect
