View Full Version : Washers, coffees, OJ: HAL newbie questions

Hi everyone- despite lots of past cruises, I'm feeling like a newbie all over again since we've just booked our first HAL cruises. Please help me with this first round of questions...

-Washers on the Maasdam: do they dispense detergent automatically, or should we have our own detergent sheets? Don't want to mess up the fragile sewage system on the ship!

-Free fresh squeezed OJ: Only in the buffet, or in the dining room at breakfast also?

-Free lattes and cappucinos: Only in the dining room and only after dinner? Or are they available at breakfast and lunch and in the buffet also?

-Corkscrew and wine glasses in the stateroom? If not, do we request from the cabin steward or from room service?

Thanks very much for your help!

-Washers on the Maasdam: You'll need to press a button once to dispense detergent. Press more than once and you'll still have too much suds to rinse out properly. If you want fabric softener, bring your own sheets for the dryer.

-Free fresh squeezed OJ: Only on the buffet, but possibly in the dining room at breakfast if you ask. They'll have to run to the Lido to get some.

-Free lattes and cappucinos: In the dining room. But there some sort of machines in the Lido too. I'm not a coffee drinker, sorry.

-Corkscrew and wine glasses in the stateroom? They've been in our cabins. If not, just ask your cabin steward.

Detergent - Can't confirm for Maasdam, but on other ships it is automatic. Should hold true for Maasdam as well.

The good OJ - Lido at breakfast, anytime in the MDR.

Free lattes/capps - Anytime in the MDR or Pinnacle. Never in the Lido or Explorations Cafe. The push-button machines in the Lido are plain ol' coffee. Once you get your first cup, servers will wander by to pour refills.

Wine glasses/corkscrew - if not present in your cabin (may vary by category), ask your steward. (We had them in our last Verandah Spa cabin on Ryndam, but not in OVs on other ships.)

Caveat - there is some possibility that this info will vary by ship. YMMV.

I've generally gotten fresh squeezed OJ in the DR without asking.

I've never had a corkscrew in any of the rooms I've been in but I'm usually in the cheap seats:D.

If you're booked in a qualifying suite, the coffees in the Neptune Lounge are excellent.

We bring our own corkscrew ... but don't put it in your carry on when flying!:D

-Washers on the Maasdam: do they dispense detergent automatically, or should we have our own detergent sheets? Don't want to mess up the fragile sewage system on the ship! You will need to press a button to dispense the special bio detergent. Bring your own fabric softner sheets for the dryer. The washer requires 8 quarters and the dryer 4 quarters. You can get change at the front office.

-Free fresh squeezed OJ: Only in the buffet, or in the dining room at breakfast also? Fresh squeezed orange is always available in the Lido. But you have to specify that you want it in the dining room -- otherwise they will bring you the canned stuff.

-Free lattes and cappucinos: Only in the dining room and only after dinner? Or are they available at breakfast and lunch and in the buffet also? Free lattes and cappucinos are available only in the dining room and available at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

-Corkscrew and wine glasses in the stateroom? If not, do we request from the cabin steward or from room service? Back your own corksrew in your checked luggage -- some ships run out of them. Your cabin stewards will be able to get you wine glasses.

Thanks very much for your help!

Enjoy your first HAL cruise.

Yeah, that wouldn't be cool, would it:D? I don't generally bring my own wine. I have enough trouble lugging my 2 suitcases full of clothes.

Thanks everyone! One more question please...is the dining room open for lunch on sea days, or only on port days? Thanks!
