Luggage weight

I am now thoroughly confused. Previously when dh and I have travelled first class we were allowed 70 lbs. I posted on another thread and was told that was not the case any longer, so I went to do some investigation at Continental. It said we were allowed 70 lbs, but when dh checked in online, his boarding pass says 50 lbs. :confused: Just weighed "my" suitcase and it's 55 so hope we will be okay. Have not packed hubby yet, but am hoping his clothes aren't as heavy as mine. LOL

Travel sure is more confusing. I get the feeling that maybe we should take an additional small suitcase that we have on hand as we are going to have stuff that we are going to buy when get there.

Continental changed their baggage allowance about a year ago. The 70lb limit applies to international flights for folks in BusinessFirst. Domestic travel allowance is now 50lbs.

If you're at 55lbs they can (and probably will unless you get someone nice) charge you extra for the overage.

Overage charges may cost more than adding another piece of luggage. Be very careful ... and check your airline website for current info. Voice of experience ... I once paid $100 extra :eek: because two pieces of luggage weighed 52 lbs. each - and that was several years ago.

The ship allows 200lbs per person. Airlines are a whole different story. It depends on the airline, and which "class" you're flying in! 1st Class is allowed alot more weight and bags than coach!

The ship allows 200lbs per person.Where did you get that number? I've never seen any weight limit stated. All the Know Before You Go doc says is:

Baggage Allowance
Airlines, limousines and other transfer vehicles have luggage allowance policies which may limit the amount and/or weight of luggage you may take with you and/or impose excess luggage charges. You are responsible for complying with the policies. Please keep this in mind when packing.

Kittycat ... When you're done, if you weigh his suitcase and it's under 50, you can transfer some of your stuff to his to get below that 50 pound limit. We packed a smaller, collapsable, case for port purchases prior to boarding. Since we drank those purchases :D while on board, we collapsed it again to come home. If we'd bought too many souvenirs, we would have been prepared for the return trip.

We fly Delta and they have a 50 lb. weight limit for both domestic and international. First and Business Class allows 70 lbs.

The ship allows 200lbs per person. Airlines are a whole different story. It depends on the airline, and which "class" you're flying in! 1st Class is allowed alot more weight and bags than coach!

There is no weight limit on a cruise ship!!

If you are only 5lbs over most check-in agents will let you off, especially in first class.
I would make sure you keep it at a max of 55 lbs though. If you can move a couple of things to make it closer to 52/53lbs that would be better.

I would not take a chance unless your DH's bag weighs much less..Usually they weigh both bags together, but you never know if you get a new Agent checking you in & is careful not to bend the rules..You might, as you mentioned & others suggested,want to check another suitcase at a less expensive price..Also it's a good idea to cross pack..I am retired from the airline industry & would never travel without cross packing..Put some of your clothes in DH's bag & vice versa..There have been too many times when just one bag was lost...

When we went to Alaska, we checked three bags & the third one was much less than paying excess baggage rates..

Also, we try to keep each bag at 47-48 lbs each, as don't believe those hand held scales are as accurate as the check-in counter scales..

I think I'd try to get the heavier bag closer to 50 lbs. We travel almost exclusively on American Airlines as my wife, because of business travel, has advanced frequent flier status with AA. That means over half of our travel winds up in first class. They treat her very, very well with first class check-in and priority bag handling no matter what class her tickets and I get to hitchhike along on her perks. We have a little handheld bag weight thingy at home and we try, like Betty, to keep our bags around 48 lbs or less. She or we have traveled almost every week for the past six weeks so lots of time in airports and checking in. Some agents have been very observant, some not so when it comes to bag weighing. I do know that coming out of Las Vegas two weeks ago, and we were flying first class, the agent weighed our bags individually and made specific mention that they were under the 50 lbs limit. Thanks to Mrs. K's travel, and she does a lot bless her heart and back, we don't have to pay baggage fees but I don't know if that would hold true for overweight bags.

I asked him to weigh it on another scale and it weighed 48 lbs. So I was okay. On the way back I had added some stuff and it was exactly 50 lbs. I hope to pack light in Nov. for Eurodam so I will have room for a few purchases, but now I am worried about the luggage direct thing. Your credit card is billed automatically. I wonder if HAL has scales to weigh your suitcase.

Also, if one is travelling to a destination that has high humidity, the clothes will "absorb" the moisture from the high humidity and therefor add to the luggage weight for the airline(s) weigh-in for checked luggage when returning home!:)

Also watch out for the weight of your carry on for international flights. Foreign carriers have very low weight limits on carry on baggage. If one of your flights is operated by a foreign carrier (even just as a "code share") you can get hit with this limit.

Recently flew Virgin Atlantic round trip Heathrow -- I believe they might code share with Continental. Carry on bags were ignored at O'Hare but carefully weighed (and then checked, in our case) at Heathrow. They were very patient with our need to do some packing reorganization, but very firm on their weight limits for baggage in the cabin.

I wonder if HAL has scales to weigh your suitcase.

If you take your suitcase up to the fitness centre, where the weight scale is, you could weigh your suitcase there. Otherwise, as far as I know, HAL doesn't have any other type of scale for passengers to use. Last cruise, I borrowed one of those hand held things from another passenger, but I couldn't get it to work properly, and just hoped that I was okay. When I got to the airport I did some re-aranging, and found I was just at 50 pounds for one suitcase, less for the other, smaller case.

look around on internet, there are different very good brands for sale that cost around 20 USD.
It is a handle with a strap to be fixed to your luggage handle : it says the wheight in lbs or kg.
Small as a camera, fits in your handbag.

Sounds like the one we have and it does work great. Seems to be very accurate. :)

I wonder if HAL has scales to weigh your suitcase.
I have seen scales on two ships, but have never looked for them on others.
There was one in the atrium on Lower Promenade on the Rotterdam and Amsterdam the last time I sailed each ship. I just happened to notice them as I passed by. IIRC, I remember hearing about the one on the Rotterdam on a previous cruise.

Check at the Front Desk on your ship to learn if they have one.
