Hi,

I have posted info in the ports of call section but it is in the other catageory not even a named port. I'm on the Veendam 2/5 and I'm taking the Banana Plantation bus tour. The US Governement has posted a travel advisory about travel in Guatemala and I'm concerned. It was last updated 1/21/05

I talked to HAL and they say they do not think it will be a issue. It's my life.

Has anyone done this tour do you feel safe?

Thanks

Craig

Craig...

You must use your own best judgement. On the one hand, it is hard to imagine HAL would offer/sell a shore excursion for which they have any safety doubts. On the other hand, that is a very recent State Department update and should be carefully evaluated.

How much do you really want/need to do this excursion?

Personnally, I would pass. That is just me. I am positive there are any number of others here who will say .....Don't be silly; it's perfectly safe. As you said, it is your life and safety at risk.

When we did the Quiriuga Ruins/Rio Dulce Tour in Feb last year, we felt perfectly safe. Our guide did mention that his country was going through some troubles...

That evening, we heard of a couple busses on another tour being stopped by militia on the way back to the ship. Though nothing bad happened, it was certainly unsettling to those who were on the tour.

If the State Department says that its not a good idea to travel there, then I too would certainly think twice about going there just to see some bananas...
