It seems like every time we've been on another line that was in port with a HAL ship, we always had a better berth at the docks. Is this because of the size of the ships? I know that some of the mega vessels need a lot of space, but I always felt bad for the smaller ones, it seemed as though they were not a priority at the docks.

Having said this, I am happy to say that we leave for our first HAL experience on 2-13, & so looking forward to it.:0

macable - Just what you said and seniority. Those lines who have been comming to the specific port the longest get first dibs on where they dock. Thus HAL has been around quite some time and they truly do have seniority!

You'll notice that with the "tried and true" ships of Alaska. The newer ships of the fleet seemingly get the more remote pier .. i.e. the Oosterdam docking at a more remote pier in Juneau, Alaska but that could primarily be due to her size as well. Princess and RCI are always at a more distant pier from town.

I believe the order of arrival into the port has something to do with the docking location as well. On long piers, the ship arriving first is usually tied off near the base of the pier with subsequent arrivals further along the pier.
