I'm currently booked in 5180 for a Thanksgiving cruise on the Oosterdam. Never sailed in an aft and I'm just wondering if anyone can pass along their impressions...and pictures. I guess my biggest question is...are the aft cabins smaller than their in-line counterparts?
Thanks!

I am not sure if the aft mini suites are smaller or not. I have heard the suites are, but not sure about the mini suites. I have a suite and mini suite booked on the Zuiderdam in March, stay tuned for my review when I return, I'll let you know. Enjoy your cruise.

We were just in 5181. This Cat A "suite" (NOT!) is about 200 square feet, like most ocean view cabins. The only problem we had was the hallway was very narrow and we had trouble negotiating the closets. The trade-off is the veranda is 4 times as big! Photos are in my sig below.

I also have a question about this cabins. Are they open to the balconies above. it looks like from pics, that anyone in the aft cabins above you can see below onto your balcony. Is this correct?

From how I understand it, yes, the aft cabins, the balconies are visible to the people above. The balcony cabins on the sides of the ships, are not.

Wake cabins on deck 8 are nearly entirely covered. Verandas on decks below are uncovered except for about 2 feet. Anyone from above you can see pretty much everything. The side verandas on the inside corners are exposed to the adjacent cabins.

Category A on Vista-Class ships aren't referred to as "suites" of any kind...
They are called "Deluxe Verandah Staterooms"

You're right, Brian... on Zaandam and Volendam, Cats A&B are called Veranda Suites, but there's no Cat SS. Regardless, I think suites should have two distinct and separate areas (if not 2 rooms). That doesn't mean I wouldn't choose a suite again. Our 4th Zuidy will be a Cat SS unless the upgrade fairy works her magic!

The verandas are large, but some garbage from the aft pools do find there way to the upper decks verandas.
I love being aft, but others I have spoken to really did not like the lack of privacy and the debris.

Responding to OP about size of the aft verandah cabins compared to the side verandahs: we were also in 5181 and the comparison to the side verandah cabins is very similar. The side cabins are a little bit wider, but the depth of the cabins is shorter, and the verandah is a lot smaller. We sailed with 2 couples who were in side verandahs and 3 in aft verandahs. The afts felt bigger, even though they were slightly narrower. If you are at the end of the bed or at the closet you notice it a lot, but the verandah was wonderful. If you want protection from the sun and/or elements, or complete privacy on the verandah, the aft does not offer much of that, but I would choose an aft again in a second. When I stood on the verandah and looked up I would sometimes see people above but it did not bother me. I was clothed and not doing anything that I wanted to keep private! :)

I loved the cabins located in the aft. In the seven days on board--one plastic glass landed on out veranda--it was a windy day. We found a few small flecks of soot, but no major dirt or debris. Yes, it's true most of the aft section of the aft cabins are open, but saw few people above, looking down the entire trip. The side section--approx 22' x 6' was TOTALLY covered and NOT open to the other side balconies. Total privacy. When you consider the incredible view, the space on the veranda...The aft cabins are the best! You'll be glad you chose the aft! (The stars at night and the sunsets are amazing!):)
