My 88 year-old father will be cruising with my family again this Christmas, this time on the Noordam. Since his last cruise, he has started wearing adult diapers. Are they available on the ship? I tried the search function and got a whole lot of info about infants. My guess is they are not available, which will cause some creative packing for us.

Thanks for any insight. Jerry

You could call ships services and ask.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that tomorrow.

Cool Cruiser

Not sure what Three Mile Island has to do with anything, but thanks. At least I know how to use Google. :D

Never seen them sold in anywhere on board. The personal items & OTC meds available for purchase in the small area of the main shop on the HAL ships are "bare-bones' at best.

Calling HAL ship's services as Sails recommended and asking if they could have some available for you to purchase, (possibly from the ship's medical department..?) would seem to be your best option.

Your other option might be to purchase a large quantity before boarding, have them wrapped in something innocuous, put a ship's luggage tag on the outside, and have them brought aboard & delivered to your dad's cabin with your luggage. I can't even imagine trying to pack enough to make it through a cruise.....

And BTW, Jerry, I commend you for taking your elderly father on a cruise with you despite this difficulty. I only wish I had my dad here to take along with me. He passed away when I was only 15 years old. :( I would gladly do whatever I needed to do to see to his needs.

Have a wonderful cruise & God bless you. :)

Even if they were available for purchase onboard you would not want to pay the cost they would charge. I needed to purchase one small box of feminine products and it was $10.00 for a 16 count package :mad:.

My late mother lived and cruised with me and used something similar. I just packed throughout both her luggage AND mine (just in case). They roll, fold and or "squish" quite nicely.

Enjoy your cruise!!!

Jerry: Several years ago I played tour guide to a senior lady in Ixtapa, Mexico. Adult diapers were available in a pharmacy. If you are on the Dec. 23/10 sailing I notice your first foreign port is Montego Bay, Jamaica. You may wish to google for a pharmacy there. Good Luck and enjoy your Holiday cruise on the beautiful Noordam. Gail:D

No, they're not available. They do squash pretty flat and you can find all kidns of creative ways to stuff them inside of things, like shoes (wrap the diaper in a zip bag), or other "nooks and crannies" in your luggage. They're hard to find outside of the US, so take plenty..more than you think he'll need.

Just like for kids, you'll need to bring what you need.

That is what my Mom and I do when we cruise together. She buys what she needs and we stuff them in where ever they will fit. But, if you are not flying, I love the idea of just putting them in a box and sticking a luggage tag on them. You know people pack boxes of wine on board. Just get a liquor store box from wine and stuff them in there with a luggage tag. Even if you are flying I think you could use that as one piece of luggage on the flight (assuming you don't need to use your luggage allowance completely for your other suitcases).

Just keep in mind that they are soft and can be fitted in many many places in your luggage!!

Good luck.

You have to pack your own supply (my issue is from an auto accident). I do one of 2 things, if we are flying to the departure city a day or more ahead I ship a box to the hotel and mark hold for arrival with a duffle bag in the box to repack. If, like our next cruise, we fly down the same day then really no option but to take an extra bag. Again, we use a duffle bag that can be collapsed and put in other luggage for the trip home. Or, if we buy too much stuff there isn't any issue of where to pack it, diapers out and souvenirs in. There are luggage shipping services that will deliver to the ship but they are expensive, about $100.00 each way. Also, we tip the cabin steward extra on the 1st day for handling the disposal. Other then the logistics it isn't any big deal.

By the way if you are packing wine for the cruise, diapers are a great packing mateiral. Never have had a broken bottle.

Just a suggestion ........ But it would seem that you could box up
the necessary supplies (in a separate suitcase and/or box) --
mark it "Medical Equipment" - and check it as baggage --
at no cost.

Just going on the fact that Medical Equipment/Supplies on an
airplane do not count as extra luggage charge. You just
need to be sure that it is the only thing in that suitcase and/or box.

I didn't know that!!

One more suggestion for when you get on board. My Mom always asks for a garbage bag from the steward because the bathroom garbage is usually a small can and you don't want to put that garbage in the main part of your stateroom. This made it easier for her and for the steward!!

Have a good trip.

I agree that you should take the cruise with your father. These days don't come again, I can attest to that as both my parents are now deceased. Further, one additional thought on the diapers .. they have these plastic-type bags you can buy where the air can be sucked out of them and they compress the contents a lot. That coupled with having a separate bag for 'medical supplies' and you could have enough for an extended period.
Hope it all works out for you.

I wonder if the infirmary carries them (rather than the shops). I agree it seems that it might be a common request on ships.

I also think it's great you're taking your dad on a cruise and also that he's still cruising at his age! I hope I will be cruising at 88.

Agree with Sail that Ships Services might help..

There's also a WEB site called Babies travel Light:

http://www.babiestravellite.com/

They deliver needed baby diapers to cruise ships..So call them, 1-888-450-lite, ask if they know of a company which would deliver adult diapers to the ship...

Per the Know before you go booklet, there's a company which delivers wheelchairs for rental to HAL...Maybe they would deliver diapers or know of another company..

Care Vacations/cruise ship Assist: 1-877-478-7827 ..

Only other suggestion is to plan to get to the port a day in advance & go to a large store like Walmart or a drug store & get them there..That's what some do who take infants with them..

Hope this helps...It's wonderful that you will be taking your Dad on your cruise..I have fond memories of having my Mom with me on a trip to Portugal & Belgium, before she got sick & passed away...

Cheers....:)Betty
