We received our docs for our upcoming cruise from Hong Kong on the Shadow on October 19. We were disappointed to find that the ship will be at China Merchants Wharf rather than the Ocean Cruise Terminal. Does anyone know how far it is from downtown Kowloon to this alternate terminal? I've been researching the internet with no luck. Guess I will just call SS, but thought I would check here first. Thanks!

Hi travelingduo
It's on Hong Kong Island.
Take a look at this link: http://www.discoverhongkong.com/cruise/eng/terminals_China_Merchants_Wharf.jsp

I'm surprised. SS usually docks at the Ocean Terminal.

Thanks, Jennifer. I did see that web site, but it only talks about the distance to the airport. I called SS and they don't have any information except that they say it is 1 hour from the airport. I was trying to find out how far it was from the center of Kowloon where we will be for several days prior to the cruise. We were just trying to figure out how long it will take to get there and if it is easy to get a taxi to take you there. :)

Hi travelingduo
Yes, very easy to get a taxi...depending on the traffic and where exactly u r staying in Kowloon, 15-20 mins drive across to Hong Kong Island.
Cheers

Hong Kong is a very compact city and public transportation is some of the best in the world. It doesn't take long to get anywhere. I dare say you will probably spend more time visiting sites on Hong Kong Island than
you will in Kowloon (but don't miss the Temple Street Night Market in Kowloon).

... it is 1 hour from the airport. The taxi ride is perhaps US$50.

We're on the cruise before you which will dock there and overnight before we disembark. I'll try to post from the ship to let you know what information we get while aboard. We too usually stay in Kowloon (Mongkok actually at the Langham Place), but this time we are just flying home on the second day. In the past it was wonderful to see the ship docked right in town, but as long as we're in Hong Kong it will be great.
There is an express metro to the airport that goes very near the ship and we'll probably pick up a taxi to the metro. But I'll try to post to let you know.
Excited to be on the Shadow and we'll keep the ship warm for you!

When I was in Hong Kong, I, of course, took the Star Ferry to Hong Kongside. As I stood around the ferry terminal, I realized that other ferries were continuing to cross that broad harbour to local suburbs and I don't mean the "rich" kind.
So I hopped on a lower-quality ferry and took a long ride throughout the harbour, boarding small and smaller ferries, paying less and less. There was a "Mr Roberts" moment when the Captain came out of his tiny bridge and watered a small palm. The locals were craning their necks to figure out why that crazy American lady was riding their boats.
Those crossings were some of my more revelatory moments in that city. I could tell a story about accidentally winding up in a doubledecker bus terminal close to the Northern Territories but . . . .
Hong Kong is an exciting, vibrant city - enjoy.
