DH wants to buy a real Panama hat while we're in Panama (in a couple weeks). Does anyone have a recommendation where to get one in Panama City or Fuerte Amador?

You can find them in just about any tourist spot in Panama.
For top quality there are several small stores in Panama Viejo (old town in Panama city).

"Panama Hats" are all over . . . but, beware, "Panama Hats" are made in Ecuador and always have been. There is a genuine Panamanian campesino hat which is worn by farmers all over Panama and hand woven, but you rarely see them in shops in Panama City. The movie-style cheap "Panamanian Hats" are sold all over, and you will find some of the good, expensive ones in better stores. Most of the stores in the ports will have both.

Regards, Richard

Thanks to both posters for info on Panama hats. Do realize they are made in Ecuador but wanted one of the nicer ones.

in fort amador you will see a duty free store taht sells liquor, cameras, etc...
they have panama hats, the store is only 15 seconds of a walk.

at the YMCA crafts market which is a 15min drive you could get them here also.

panam hats range from 15.00-20.00 minimum price or if you want a very fine hat it could cost you up to 100.00 !!!!

in these places they have a good selection and high quality of hats.
