It's OK Danno. I get just as upset when people spell Millennium with only one 'l' or one 'n'. You just have to learn to let it go. Book another cruise. That always helps. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Apparently they have a drug under development to get rid of the symtoms of cruise withdrawl...it makes you boring, lifeless, dull, cranky, uninspired. To get a better sense of it's effects just find someone who doesn't cruise...this is what we will become http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif.

"the" usage is an iffy complaint.

"I'm going to the mall" "I'm going on the bus" are correct, so how could "the Zenith be wrong?" Guess the only complaint I would have is when they include "the" as part of the ship's name by capitalizing it - The Zenith.

I have more of a problem with "That was the funnest trip." "That was so fun." - instead of "That was so much fun."

And of course, the infamous - borrow/lend - gone/went - misusage.

A lot of misusage/misspelling is time related - no one has the time to edit all their mistakes - nor really cares to.

(And, of course, my incorrect use of prepositions at the end of sentences must annoy people, but I just can't make myself structure the sentence the correct way. It sounds unnatural.)

This isn't a resume - so we can just let people's foibles go, can't we?

Okay, I've never been on a cruise, but something comes to mind. In an old movie, I heard Cary Grant (Mr. Impeccable) refer to one of the Cunard Queens as "the Elizabeth". Maybe I was born after my time, but if it was good enough for an ocean liner, it ought to be good enough for a cruise ship.

What would John Maxtone Graham say?

I have a guess at the cause of the problem.

I agree, it does sometimes seem unneeded to say "the Zenith". The first cruise ship I sailed was Century. That sounds better to me that to say my first cruise was on the Century.

But here's my guess. We're talking shorthand here... the actual names of these ships are not just Zenith or Century, but rather (in these cases I think) it is M.V. Century, and M.V. Zenith. Motor Vehicle.

It does make perfect sense to say I am sailing on the Motor Vehicle Century. "The" is the article for the noun "vehicle" and "Century" is just the adjective, although in this case a proper name.

Same applies to US Navy ships, USS Nimitz... I was stationed aboard the United States Ship Nimitz.

I dunno. I'm no linguist, but it sounds good to me! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thank you all for my Saturday morning chuckle!

Folks, you must note that Danno lives in North Bay, Ontario. We don't really know what life is like in North Bay!!!!!!

Here in Montreal...we would say that we are going on Celebrity, but we would also say that we are going on The Zenith.

As in England, we go to university. (In the U.S., I think you send your kids to college)

As for funner...the first time I heard it, my kids were little and I just figured it was a mistake that little kids make. Now it seems to be part of the "new English".

When I was taught (oh,so many years ago!) if someone asked how I felt, I was to answer that I felt well, or not so well. Now it is good or not so good! When asked how I am...I now also answer "good, and you?"

I was a teacher in the 60's and even then, grammar was not any longer emphasized. When I was a student, it was mandatory.

Things change...go with the flow.

Relax, Danno. The snow will soon disappear! (We have fresh snow on the ground this morning)

Have a Happy Easter!

This whole thread is probably totally unimportant but it is fun and interesting.
I must confess that I am one of those who would say that I was on the Century. After reading this thread I realized that I would not say I am going to the Macy's (nor if I had more money the Bloomingdale's).
I was beginning to feel that I might have been guilty of abusing the English language http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Then I stopped to think and realized that I would also say that I was going on the Orient Express not I'm going on Orient Express. Now I am totally confused. What is the underlying grammatical principal at work here?

rwb
April 11th, 2004, 01:12 PM
Gardencat, your analogy mixes apples and oranges. "The" is used before nouns. That's why you feel uncomfortable using it in front of an adjective like "Macy's". The original poster takes too narrow a position, endorsing a convention that is contrary to conventional American English.

Nearly every American dictionary takes the position that "the" is properly used before the name of a ship. The American Heritage Dictionary notes specifically that "the" is used "before a proper name, as of a monument or ship, as in the Alamo or the Titanic." Webster's and the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Disctionary also note that "the" is used "before a proper name as of a ship....the Mayflower." What could be clearer?

American English has developed a sophisticated set of conventions regarding the need for the definite article before proper names. Generally, "the" is not necessary before proper names of persons or places (unless the place is only partially stated, as in the Phillipines, or is composed of multiple words, as in the USA). It is, however, frequently used before the proper names of tangible things, as in the Empire State Building or the Midwest. Nearly all dictionaries and most manuals of style explicitly endorse its use before the names of ships.

The single exception is the US Navy, which does not use the definite article before the names of Navy ships, arguing that only one ship of a given name is in commission at one time and thus there is no need for the specificity provided by the definite article. The Navy does not, however, take this position in the case of private or non-US vessels.

Yes Danno it has been fun or, as my teenaged son would say, "It's the bomb!"

Having been in the Navy and serving on several ships, "THE" is NEVER used. A ship is christened and considered to be a living entity. That is why ships are ships are called "she."

Also, the correct names as the ships are registered would be "M/V Summit", not "M/V The Summit."

Well I don't know what the US Navy says but according to the people who write dictionaries it is perfectly fine to put "the" in front of the name of a ship.

Chandris, Celebrity's predecessor, actually had two ships called THE VICTORIA and THE AZUR. Whether it would have been appropriate to talk about having "been on the THE VICTORIA" I do not know...

Now, what about Concorde? People would generally talk about "taking Concorde", not "taking the Concorde". Arguably it should have been "taking a Concorde" since there were more than one. After all, I have never heard someone say, "I took 747 to New York", unless maybe they were talking about a flight number 747...

I know the cure for my cruise withdrawal, unfortunatly, I haven't won the lottery or robbed any banks , so it looks like it won't happen until next year

Hi Doug! Interesting, all the people I have spoken to have called it THE Concorde since it was such a different way of flying. The actual plane was not important, it was the fact that you were going on the fastest commercial jet around and actually going faster than the earth was moving that was so remarkable. (Breakfast in Paris, up, away, and landing in New York in time for ... breakfast!)

.........I guess it must be a "Canada thing", or is it "THE Canada thing"? ey?

You know how Canada got her name, don't you? They put all the letters of the alphabet in a bag, and gave it to someone who started to pull letters out. As he pulled them out, he was to announce to the crowd what the letter was, so....he started and...
"C....ey" "N.....ey" "D.....ey"
And that's how Canada got her name.
Is it OK to call Canada "her" or is it "it"?
