DH and I will be on the Statendam for 28 days beginning Dec 10. We have never sailed over Christmas before and this will be our second HAL cruise. How much Christmas spirit can we expect? Is anything special done for the holidays? What about New Years Eve? Any unusual things to pack that we normally wouldn't bring on a cruise?

Hi there, We sailed Statendam for Christmas and New Years this last year.
There are decorations through out the ship. Several Christmas trees and some garland. Christmas morning they had Santa show up in the theatre and all the kids line up and presents were given to each one. Nice presents. It was a hilarious time because everyone that wanted to tell Santa what thay wanted came on stage and sat in his lap. Some were 70 years old or more. And no they were not all women!.
We bought a small decoration to put on our door and saw quite a few do the same. You do have a Turkey Dinner in the main dining room if you want it. The service crew put on a few shows for the holidays showing their home customs for the holidays . t was lovely. Please attend.
New Years ...They will give you the hat , the noisemakers and the paper whistles as well as a party to dance the New Year in. Even provide you a free glass of bubbly. Bring a party outfit :D and you will have all you need.
We are going on the Maasdam for the New Year this Dec.
Have a great time!

Thanks for the info on holiday festivities. Looking forward to seeing a few WELL- Behaved children on board to enjoy the Santa-type anticipation.
So far we have bought over the door wreath hangers, magnetic hangers and strong suction cup hangars for hanging stockings and decorations. We use over the door hangers for hanging clothes when we are packing at home and have thought one might be useful when packing on board. One thing I am always wishing for in our cabins is a hook to hang things like hats and walking sticks.

We bring these along as they are useful, easy to install/remove with no damage to surfaces.

I may pick up a pack of those. I'm looking at a shower caddy made by 3M to hold more of the necessary shower items.

DD and I used the hooks on the wall for the robes that were provided. I believe they were on the walls close to our beds. We decorated our rooms with battery accessible lights and some sit around items in our room. A small Christmas Tree from guest services would have been nice to order.
I enjoy and travel every Christmas/NYE. I am a school nurse so this works with my scheduled, unfortunately, it is also the costliest. Oh well, we only live once.
