View Full Version : It's Time for Another HAL Shipbuilding, by Crusinetta!!!

Getting us all prepared her for another Crusinetta Ship Building Voyage:)

Crusinetta boards the Ryndam this Sunday, 10 October 2010 and already has assigned her obedient and yet loving helpers (otherwise known to us here at Cruise Critic as "the WayTooFineDamers) what they will be needing in the way of supplies to build the next DAM ship: The WayTooDamFine.

So Bookmark/Subscribe to this thread and I will be posting the photos as they come in.

Any questions or comments ask away and Cruisenetta will answer, in between building spurts that is:D

I am a newbie to HAL, will be taking my first HAL cruise on October 30th. What is this shipbuilding that you are referring to. I have seen it talked about before on these boards, and I am curious if this is something on every cruise and what does it mean?

I will give you what little I know of it.

On board HAL they sometimes have Ship Building contests. Everything must be found on board the ship you are cruising on.

The ship builders (cruisers) must build the ship and then it has to stay afloat for a specific amount of time, I think in the Lido Aft Pool Hot Tub.

Crusinetta is a real expert at these. And her builds are a lot of fun to watch come to life.

She takes photos of each step and either Spinner or I post the photos and keeps everyone up to date. This build Spinner is also on a cruise so I get to do it:D I am so excited!!!

I am sure Crusinetta or Spinner, or someone else, who has better knowledge than I, will be along shortly and correct any errors/misinformation I might have given (I hope no errors, but with me ya never knows:D)

The correct name of Cruisinetta's new Ship is "The WayTooFineDam"

Sorry, I was so excited I misnamed it:eek: And it took me longer than the allowed 15 minutes to figure that out...So I could not edit the original post:o

Thanks for the info. I think I understand, now that you have explained it. Is there anyway to know if my cruise will be having a ship building contest?
Thanks again.

I asked Cruisinetta and her reply is: "I always have the person in charge of the Meet & Greet request it. They always have it if it is requested."

I think they call it the 'Whatever floats your boat' contest, and the finished vessel must not only float, but do so holding at least a six pack of coke, preferably a 12 pack. On Oosterdam, sea trials may have been held in a hot tub, but the finals were in the main pool. Carolyn

We were on the 7-26 sailing of the Amsterdam to Alaska.

I just happened on the ship float out. Was very disappointed that had not seen anything about it in the Daily News.

Would have liked to have seen the whole show. Only saw one ship.

It would be nice if HAL was to publicize a little better.

She must also be enjoying the new itinerary! My friends are on board the Ryndam right now and are unexpectedly in Nassau, Bahamas after their stop yesterday in Key West due to a hurricane. They are continuing on to Half Moon Cay and Turks and Caicos instead of the Western Caribbean ports. Sounds like a good impromptu cruise! I will e-mail them and let them know to be on the lookout for the WayToFineDam!

I'd want her aboard the next time a ship loses power at sea - I have the feeling she'd know how to McGuyver the thing into shape!

I think your friends can find out when the Sea Tests/Trials are by asking the Cruise Director... I'll ask Cruisinetta in a moment.

LOL, I just typed in sea trials, and the WooHooDam came up after it :D Since building with Cruisinetta, I have been following all of her ship building adventures.

Usually those Sea Trials are held on the last sea day, after 1:00 pm and usually before 3:00 p.m

Lynn has built smaller ships, but it took 3 of us to take her to sea trials, selling inaugural tickets along the way!

What/who is there to be angry at? It's not like anyone can control the weather. I guess that people can be angry at themselves for picking a cruise in Hurricane season...but maybe that's why they are cheaper ;) Who knows. Oh well. At least you aren't all sea sick and tossing about in Paula.

Hi there. That is a huge change from "exotic" Western Caribbean to mostly Bahamas. At least they are taking you somewhere. We missed 3 ports (of 5) on Maasdam Montreal to Boston in August/September and just headed straight to Boston.

What hurricane? Angry or disappointed?

The WayTooFineDam is really taking shape on this the 3rd day of the new build:) Sea trials are Saturday, 16 October 2010. I am told that they are usually held between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

Note how Huge she is by comparing her height and length with the sofa and coffee table.
Keep in mind that ALL ship building materials MUST be found on the Real Ship and cannot be brought aboard.

In answer to a few questions asked, Cruisinetta replied with the following answers:
[
Question: Will the The WayTooFineDam be donated to the Ryndam?

Answer: "Sometimes they keep them and that's fine with me."
[
Question: How long did it take to build this ship? Thanks!

Answer: "It took around 8 hours to build."
[
Question: Can Cruisinetta take a close up of the life saver and lounge chairs?

Answer: "I will send more pics when I get home the internet is just too slow."

Question: And what is the green thing?

Answer: "The green thing is a funny I bought at Pirhana Joes LOL."

OK folks, that is it for today's photos. More to come when Cruiseinetta returns home!!

I love her work, her inventiveness, and her scrounging talent.

I know she relies on her team for much of the scavenging - but also that she sends them out with a "shopping list".

It amazes me she can waterproof ship's shops paper bags so thoroughly with plastic wrap.

Best of luck on the sea trials!

Patricia, I am also so amazed at what she can build out of the things found on board the ship. And not some little newspaper fold up, like I'd make, but an actual replica of the ship she is on.... WOW!!!

Betty, Partially right on the answer. Carrots are the top of the lifeboats (can see that plainly in today's photos) But the bottom is incorrect:D Believe me, if she had not told me, I never would have guessed!!

OK as to using the Memory candle for Laura.

Make sure you have a Post box open (like I have right now to reply to you.)

Open a new Browser Window or Tab: Go to my page here: http://joanjett2000.topcities.com/HAL/Special/Laura-Kerr.html

Decide which of the graphocs to use. I chose the smaller one. Position your mouse to the right of the graphic and drag it to the left. The graphic will change coloring. NOW go to the top of your Browser and click on Edit, Then click on Copy.

Come back to your post and follow these steps.

Type in whatever message you want in the post and then go to the top of the browser once more and click on Edit and then on Paste.

The Memory Candle should be there

Hope this works for you Betty. If not let me know.

LOL, I apologize to all, but I really am having a ball with all of the guesses being made:D

I knew when I was asked to do this Honor, and yes, to me it is a great honor, that it would be a lot of fun. But with Lynn throwing the Question for me to ask ya'll, it has turned into so much ore fun and more:D

I will say that there has been one correct answer given. But I will let Cruisinetta tell you who that winner is and what the correct answer was:D

You can keep guessing if you want to... Still fun I think:D

Just keep in mind one of my last clues was that the bottom of the lifeboat/tenders is not edible:) So no, salt shakers is not the correct answer.

I keep checking my computer almost every time I'm able to, to see what has been added to this link. :D

Here's my guess..... I'll go along with another poster on the cotton balls or gauze shaped with glue or something to form the bottom of the tenders. I've been enlarging the pics to try and see.....it even looks like they've been carved, but you already said no on the soap bars.

Believe me, I am also having so much fun with this thread. Cruisinetta is definitely a talented lady!!

One thing that you may not have realized, since you are fairly new, as you put it, is that the ship is almost an exact replica of the ship she is on at the time of her builds. This ship is modeled after the Ryndam.

LOL!! :D Are the tenders the white thing that is on the red Hillshire Farms lunchmeat container lid in several of the pics? I've been studying that, but can't figure it out. Maybe some sort of paper mache? You really have my curiosity up on this.

Yes, I did note that this was taken after the Ryndam....my latest ship on HAL (actually I've only been on HAL....why break a good thing!). I'm hoping to do another cruise next summer.....just watching for the fares!

Ok I am home now. I am amazed at all the good ideas you have for the bottom of the lifeboats. Some are quite amusing and some excellent ideas. I could not use the spoons this time because this ship required huge lifeboats. The ship itself was 6 feet long. I could not have made it this big if I was in any other cabin. Thanks HAL!! :) As for the Bahama cruise, many very angry people. We did understand that we could not go where a hurricane was but just thought they could have come up with better alernatives. Most would have prefered to stay out to sea the day of Nassau. I had a great day in Grand Turk. It's just gorgeous. Anyway, back to the ship. I think I read that someone guessed toilet paper. YOU ARE CORRECT. It took three days for those darned things to dry. Then had to find a good way to cut them. And yes that is one of them on the Hillshire Farm box. LOL. Very observent of you! ;) I am a little pooped right now, so I will catch up with you later. Niters!

Now, still have to log in all the bills which were deducted this month from our Checking Account, & definatly should balance the check book & double-check all our credit card statements...

Aw shucks Joanie, you were great. Thanks so much for filling in for Spinner2. Not sure we will be posting the next two ships. Next up is the Woohoodam, then the Tidyzuidydam.

I'm ready to post the photos of the next two and I'm sure Joanie will help me!

Joanie's going to do Sheepledam! It's her turn and Sheepledam is special to Joanie.

OK Marney, I guess it's you and me again for the Woohoodam and the Tidyzuidydam. LOL. I am amazed at how many hits we got for this ship. Thanks all for the kind words and the guessing game was a hoot. I will put something new on the next ship and we will have the guessing game again. Till November 13th, Netta, OUT
