Good Service Should Be Equally Rewarded Is Tipping In The Pinnacle Similar To A Restaurant Or Is It Something "extra" With The Bulk Of The Tip In Our Bill? Westerdam 2/6/05

There is no tip included in the $20 pp charge for dining in Pinnacle.

Presumably, some say, the stewards who work there are part of the automatic tipping and receive some portion of that sum which is charged to our accounts. We Always tip the steward who serves and dinner as well as the wine steward. Sometimes we tip the Maitre d' and sometimes we do not.

There will be those here who will say they always tip and there will be those who say they never tip anything over above the automatically charged amount. Both are correct. Do what feels right for you.

It's always a bit tricky when it comes to tipping habits. I hear the Pinnacle is worth the price and since we're not doing much by way of excursions we will give it a try. after all how many times in life does one have so many choices see you Westerdam folks next week we can watch the eagles win!

The Pinnacle Grill staff do get something out of that $4 that is divided among the crew. It can't be much as that $4 is divided up among a lot of the "behind the scenes" crew.

On our last several cruises we have had 2 wait staff and a wine steward. We tipped all three.

On the Westerdam the maitre'd never came by our table once in either of our visits there. In fact we didn't even see him circulating around the dining room.

Here is the official HAL statement:

"A gratuity of $10 per guest per day for dining and stateroom services will be automatically added to your shipboard account on a daily basis. We are confident that you will find the service onboard exemplary and, should you wish to make adjustments, you may do so at the end of the cruise by contacting the front desk. A 15% service charge will be automatically added to your bar charges and dining room wine account. "

Before the auto tip we would always tip in Pinnacle. Now it appears it is a part of the $10 per guest per day levy. One can always overtip of course.

There was no 15% service charge added to our wine bill in the Pinnacle (but it was a hand-written receipt). We understood that the waitstaff got little or nothing from the auto-tip and offered a cash "thank you" - $20 for the wait staff, $5 for the wine steward. Even that seemed less than we'd normally leave for that level of service at a shore-side restaurant.
