Sorry if this is a lame question --but I've seen this cabin type referred to several time here---but I can't find a thread that explains what exactly it is. Does the Westerdam have them?

A lanai is the perfect answer for those of us who normally book inside & outside cabins & love to spend their days on the Promenade Deck...If you are one of us IMO Book it!
HAL took outside cabins on the Promenaded deck & put a sliding door in place of the window...When you open that door onto the Promenade deck you will have your own dedicated Deck Chairs for you exclusive use..No more trying to get out early to nab a deck chair on sea days..
When you are lucky enough to get one, you will be spoiled & always want one....
Unfortunately, none of the Vista ships have them as they never put outside cabins on the Promenade deck..:(
We had a lanai in Aug & loved it! Unfortunately my DH is unhappy because the Noordam will not have them either..
As Maxout mentioned only two ships have the lanai, but I'm hoping that they will have them eventually on all the smaller ships..

It's a balcony or deck....depending if you're on a ship or in a house! Some call them Verandas, too.

I did not realize they did not build them on the Ryndam. I thought that ship had had its upgrades.

After Veendam and Rotterdam the plan on the other 3 was to do the interior changes first and then have a second phase at the next drydock for the exterior changes (lanais, retreat area, extra staterooms, etc)
The plan was since adjusted some and while I can't go into all the details, Maasdam will have all the interior changes seen on Ryndam and Statendam plus the lanai rooms

We've had verandahs and oceanview cabins on HAL and we were thinking of trying a Lanai cabin next summer on the Maasdam but read some reviews by passengers - some who love them and some who mention quite a few negative aspects. I think we're going to wait to see if they work out some of the "bugs."
Here's a link to a review by someone who spent 35 days in a Lanai.

It might be worthwhile to research the origin of the word. It is Hawaiian, and refers to both the island off of Maui (near Molokai) as well as (due to its location, a porch or patio. Therefore is might be considered to be a place of rest and relaxation, just adjacent to your main living area. As HAL uses the term, it is an area just a few steps away from your room, but with a view of the sea and open air.
