Are the cabins soundproofed and relatively quiet? I'm in a veranda on the Oosterdam and am a light sleeper.

Do yourself a favor and get a white noise machine like we have. We take it everywhere as it drowns outside noises. Depending on the deck and area of the ship, you could have some noise. However, it is amazing how much better I sleep on a ship than I do at home. The beds are really comfortable and the rocking is real soothing.:)

All the HAL cabins we've been in seemed to have good soundproofing. Our TA always makes sure we're not under a public area or near an area that could potentially be noisy.

And perhaps we've been lucky to have quiet neighbors

We have never been bothered by next door neighbors. The only time we've heard them is when we're both out on the veranda. Even being under the Lido we only rarely heard them scooting tables/chairs above us. I wouldn't say the cabins are soundproof, but they're very quiet.

Avoid being under the Lido Deck and get a white noise machine.

The carpeted areas of the Lido are fine. If you are an early riser, any noise from above will go unnoticed.

Was just on the Ooosterdam in December and the Zuiderdam a couple years ago and had the same problem on both of them. The ventilation system in the cabins runs 24/7. I am not a light sleeper, but it was annoying getting to sleep the first couple of nights until I got used to the noise. It is not overly lound, just annoying. Never was able to figure out how to turn the thing off.

Check the deck plan. If you're under the Lido deck pool area, the noise from the chair dragging by the deck hands in early am can wake the dead.

I thought that living in a suite would be quieter than the other cabins, but it isn't....

Most noises are either not heard or easily ignored. Early morning door slammings by neighbors can be a problem as can the noise of the winches dropping the tenders (in tendering ports). But otherwise, I also sleep better on a ship than at home...

i cannot stress enough how important it is to get a cabin where there are other cabins above and below. definitely look at the entire deck plan. i am also sensitive to noise and this has worked very well for me. it is amazing how well they soundproof cabins on each side of you. i think they do a MUCH better job than the vast majority of hotels. try and stay a little further away from the elevator. the further away, the less traffic near your door.

I am a sound sleeper so I could not tell you if you hear noise.

Thanks for all the help. I bought a "Envirascape Sound Spa' at Target for less than $13; it has 6 different sounds including the white noise. The white noise sounds like static and will drown out most outside noises.

How about for cabins that are directly above the show lounges? I am faced with the decision to book a "guaranteed" category B cabin on the Zaandam, and several of the potential cabins are above the show lounge. Would it be noisey in those cabins when the show is on? Thanks in advance.
