I am considering a cruise to Hawaii in January from California and am curious as to other's experiences as to weather, smooth sailing and use of pools and decks for lounging in the sun this time of year?

The first day or two out, and the last day or two coming back will be on the cool side. My first cruise to Hawaii was round trip from LA in late February and I needed a wind-breaker on the aft deck.
You can always use the inside pool.
The seas over can be rough. Usually they are of a long, rolling motion.
