Just got a call from my sister in law from a whalewatching trip yesterday in Maui, crowing about all the breaching whales. They even had to stop the boat and wait until they thinned out before they could head back. Bummer for me. Does anyone know how long in the season the good whalewatching goes? I think we went the last of Mar/early April and saw several whales but no breaching. I'm getting itchy camera trigger finger!!!!

Actually, April is still pretty good for whale watching. It starts getting thin around May and June.

Last time we were there, late Feb early March, in 2003, we saw more whales than on any of our other visits. As we were checking out our condo on the Big Island, one breached just a few hundred yards off shore, a great welcome to the islands.

Mid February is the best time and Maui is the best place. The narrow channel by Lahaina is the whale grand central station then. I haven't seen much whale in Big Island in February, not closeby the way in Maui.

We saw two different pods off of the Napali Coast of Kauai late last April. Pretty late in the season for whale watching but we got lucky I guess. We had several breach within 200 feet of our boat, quite the experience.

Since they run the tours for whale watching from Dec 1 to Apr 30, the months of Jan, Feb, and Mar are probably best with Dec and Apr marginal. We saw a lot of them the middle of Jan.
