Thanks for posting the menu, KK. We got to try some of the new selections back in Sept. on the Amsterdam. One morning my sister ordered the "small bowl of creamy cottage cheese" with strawberries. The small bowl was a thimble sized :D ramekin of cottage cheese, whereas we were envisioning a scoop of cottage surrounded by sliced strawberries.

I didn't try it, but I'm intrigued by the Japanese Breakfast. What is tamagoyaki? Maybe I don't want to know!

Tamagoyaki is Japanese rolled omelet.

Sailing on the Niew Amsterdam in February....... Can you get "Clamato" juice onboard. We use it here in Canada for "cesars". I know that many Canadian snowbirds out of Florida mention that it is readily available in Florida but just wondering if it is on the ships as a juice???

I ordered a bowl of cottage cheese on the side with my main order, without fruit or trimmings, and received a small bowl (about a cup-full) of cottage cheese. I'm sure you can also indicate the amount your want.

I occassionally use Clamato to make a Bloody Mary; hadn't thought about it being available on a cruise ship. Have never seen it listed on the breakfast menu, and don't know if the bars carry it.

Maxout, thanks for the photo and description of the tamagoyaki. Is the boiled salmon rolled up inside it (referring to menu) or served on the side?

AfriCan, thanks for the heads up on the cottage cheese, I'll have to remember that and let my sister know.

The oats are steel cut rather than rolled, preserving more of the outer husk and nutrients.

Thanks Krazy Kruisers for posting the new breakfast menu.
As a rule, I normally just order tea and bagels for breakfast via room service. But since that menu have alot of things I want to try,esp the international classics, I'm heading to the dining room for breakfast.
The only thing I'm not a morning person most of the time and prefer to eat alone (don't mind sharing a table during lunch or dinner). Will they let me sit alone for breakfast?

Yes -- when you get to the dining room just tell the person in charge that you wish to eat alone. There are a lot of tables for 2 where they can sit you to eat alone.

The hours vary ship by ship.

For example:
On our first week on the Ryndam the dining room was open from 7:30 - 9 AM on full port days. On Sea days and days that we didn't arrive at a port until Noon or later -- it was open from 8 - 9:30 AM.

Then on the second week the dining room was open for breakfast every morning from 7:30 - 9 AM except for the last sea day.

A breakfast passenger last week on the Eurodam ordered a large bowl of creamy grits (which he got) and ordered them with brown sugar and raisins (which he heaped on from a serving bowl).

As a resident of the southeastern U.S., I welcome the cultural diversity that one encounters on a cruise ship. But I must admit that even diversity should have some limits--grits with sugar and raisins?

Even the Indonesian server seemed quietly startled at the idea.

If HA supplied the vegemite, we wouldn't have to deal with strangers from home looking longingly at our supply and then working up the courage to ask to share it. My friend had to share with the same person for three straight days and she was worried she would run out!:p

On the recent transpacific crossing on the Volendam, several mornings we had small packets (similar to the jam packets) of Vegemite on the table with the jam in the MDR, so it can be done. We didn't eat in the Lido, so don't know if it was available there, but did notice they had some different kind of tea, some kind of tips, available there in the beverage station.

I'm sure it was available because we had a fair number of Aussies on board. However, when we did the full circle of Australia in March/April, I don't recall seeing it.

That said, since it was there and I've heard the wondrous tales of Vegemite, I opened a packet and had a taste. And all I can say is you Aussies are a hardy lot to be able to eat that!!!!!

As for the cottage cheese and fruit, I had it a number of times and found that it came in many variations - cheese on top of fruit, side by side, separate bowls, varying amounts of both...........and not once was there even a hint of the cinnamon mentioned on the menu.

It is an interesting menu. I often enjoyed the Italian fritatta or a make your own omelet with egg whites.

If you can wait until the main dining room opens -- usually 7:30 on port days and 8 on sea days, you can write in anything you want like Eggs Benedict. Waffles, Chocolate croisonts, etc.

We were restricted to this room service menu on our recent Westerdam Cruise even during the hours the dining room was open. Scrambled eggs were substituted for Eggs Florentine. A friend in another suite wasn't able to get Oatmeal for her breakfast. While this menu is more extensive than on some other lines, and we certainly weren't going to starve on scrambled eggs, it was disappointing. The Neptune Lounge staff tried to act as though it had always been the policy to only receive the breakfast room service items. So I called the dining room to ask if the policy had also changed so now we would be restricted to the room service menu if we chose to eat diner on our verandah. They said we could still order from the MDR menu for room service, during dining room hours, in the evening. Then the dining room manager returned my call and made an exception and sent me Eggs Florentine for breakfast. That was very kind of him, and I loved the "upgraded" eggs, but I was sorry that I needed to be a bit of a squeaky wheel to get them.

Hopefully this was all just a trial run on our cruise. Maybe someone who just got off this week's cruise will let us know if the Westerdam is back to allowing room service to bring items from the MDR menu.

No one has mentioned the daily specials, which we enjoyed so much on our recent cruises (dollar pancakes including various fruits, for example.) I hope that expanding the breakfast menu wasn't accompanied by elimination of the daily specials?

Unfortunately, there are no daily specials any more. However, the one I liked (omelet with asparagus and swiss cheese) can be ordered off the make your own omelet section. I know there were a number of waffly, pancakey specials also, so there may not be a way to recreate them. I'd not thought about it since I don't partake of them.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.........

Vegemite is something I grew up with and still eat most days on toast at breakfast. When I travel abroad, I take a stash of Vegemite and a good bitter marmalade (not together!) for my toast. I don't like huge breakfasts.

One thing I do like though is a poached egg - which I couldn't get in the Lido last trip. Will try the MDR this time around.

Funny you couldn't get a poached egg in Lido as they offer a selection of eggs benedict. I would have thought they could have served you plain poached eggs if that is what you wanted. Did you ask at that section?

I got Grits in the Pinnacle and they were like water. Not like the kind you get in the south or in my kitchen, creamy with butter and oh well, sweet and low, no sugar being diabetic. Even the package grits are better than what I got.:( Think I might bring a couple of pkgs. and get half and half and hot water from room service.

I must be the only Aussie that does not like Vegemite, not my flavour, looks and tastes like axle grease or worse. So if HAL does not stock Vegemite, then I would not be worried at all. However peanut butter, love that and all the cruise lines have that.

I had friends who cruised on Volendam around Australia, earlier this year, lot of Aussies on board. The ship had to load some vegemite on board on reaching Sydney, to prevent a mutiny.

sail7seas, I did ask for my eggs but was told they weren't poaching at the stations - only fried or omelets, neither of which am I a fan. No matter. I look forward and am hopeful.

I was thinking the same thing....
sort of reminded me of that scene in "Five Easy Pieces" where Jack Nicholson asks for toast, and they say they don't serve toast.
So he asks if they have tuna sandwiches on toast, which they say they do... so he says something to the effect, "Fine, just get me a tuna on toast and hold the tuna"

Only PS, S, SA, SB and SC passengers can have breakfast in the Pinnacle.

BUT -- it is not always in the Pinnacle on all ships. On some ships it is in the King's Room and on a couple of ship's it is in the corner of the main dining room on the upper level of the dining room.

The lower level of the dining room is for all passengers for breakfast.

Also...

When the ship is in Code Orange the first few days, do not always rely upon the Concierge to be accurate when asked if Pinnacle is open for breakfast. There have been times when we were misinformed. We called Pinnacle ourselves to verify and sure enough they were open but the concierge had told us no.

If in doubt, verify.

When I saw the heading for this thread, I thought for one delirious moment that perhaps they had decided to restore the breakfast specials which used to make the morning trip to the MDR an opportunity to fantasise about what culinary delights might be awaiting one. Still, I know I can survive on Eggs Royal for breakfast for at least three weeks because I've done it.

It comforts me to think that eventually when cruise prices go back up to where they were before the recession, an offsetting benefit may be the restoration of the special breakfasts.

Breakfasts on HAL ships are tops, no matter where one eats. If I could eat breakfast for dinner, i would be one happy camper.

Thank you for the new menus. We noticed the addition of more international dishes on the recent Maasdam dinner menu as well. This is a good trend - more flavor, variety and better economics than the slab of meat/fish accompanying undistinguished sides options for dinner I found myself growing very weary of this last trip. The new flavor combo adventures and international offerings were very welcome.

Plus many countries have their big meal at midday and only lighter fare at night - again just the opposite of the Anglo-American dining tradition. (Ergo moving to only appetizers for main dinner entree items being an alternative for this dining preference.)

Keep it up Hal. Plus we are seeing more and more international passengers in larger groups as well, so this is good marketing positioning too to widen menu choices beyond the traditional Anglo-American offerings.

I can't swear to it, but I think I saw Clamato on the Rotterdam on my 2010 Alaska cruise. IIRC it was on the Bloody Mary bar that was set up on the Lido deck by the pool in the mornings. I know it is used to make a variant of a bloody mary but can't think of the cocktail's name off hand. So those of you who asked about it might want to check the bar.

Can you get shirred eggs on HAL? I always associate that with ocean liners.

My breakfast favorite is the Sunshine Parfait. I always have that and a Raising Bun.
Also might mention that Guava Juice is available in the Lido, but not in the Dining Room. We wish it was also available in the dining room!

Typhoon is correct......

That breakfast menu is served on all the HAL ships. :)

Thanks! Sounds so good!

Once each week DH tried to order the Kippered Herring -- didn't have it either week on the Ryndam.

No wonder - it probably stunk up the whole kitchen. My Grandma used to cook it once in a while & it stunk up the whole house for hours.:(
