Thanks for the information (this is the first comprehensive list I've seen). Unfortunately, everyone who said the books were pretty much useless was right!

Mine have always been a gift from my TA. That's the only source I've ever heard of.

Some people have reported that they get them on a regular basis.
We have rarely gotten them. And I have no idea why we got them on our recent Ryndam cruises.
They are not issued by HAL to everyone.
The old ones were no use to us and these new ones -- not a single coupon we would use.

Since 9/11 our TA's company - a major AAA -- have not given out any gifts -- no big deal.
So we know that our coupon books did not come from her.

I'm wondering about any 'fine print' on the Navigator's 7-bottle wine package coupon. Specifically, if it could be used when purchasing the package with a Beverage Value Card.

Are the coupon books the same as the Onboard Value Booklets?
We just booked two HAL cruises for 2011 with our travel agent and the Onboard Value Booklet is listed as a promotion for both cruises. We also got reduced deposits so I don't know if this is a promotion from the affiliation my travel agent has with a larger group or not.

One and the same. For everything in there, you have to buy something before you can use the coupon. It either entitles you to another one, or more of whatever, or a discount on something.
There is nothing that can be used without shelling out some of your own money. Now, on some things you might be making the purchase anyway, but there's no way anyone can get much benefit out of all the coupons.

MHO this version slightly better than the previous ones. Get one fitness class free for one purchaed? I might've done that anyway so getting another free is a small bonus.

We got some sort of coupon book the day we left the ship last week on teh Nieuw Amsterdam. I dont know if it's this same list of things because I'm too lazy to go get it right now :-) So, an answer to where one gets these, might be "after you cruise" :-)

I have absolutely no idea!! We have only gotten them 2 other times in the past. And there has never been any kind of a card indicating who gave them to us. They were just sitting on the desk when we got to our cabin.

I'm wondering about any 'fine print' on the Navigator's 7-bottle wine package coupon. Specifically, if it could be used when purchasing the package with a Beverage Value Card.
Fine print on that page:
Cannot not be used in conjunction with any promotional programs, sale items, Mariner Society, Holland America Line discounts, or any other discount programs. Limit one per guest per voyage. Coupons are not refundable, non-transferable and have no cash value. Photo copies not accepted. Beverage offers valid only for guests 21 and over. Service charge applies after discount.
So I would assume that you could not use the Beverage cards along with the coupon.

Yes -- it is the Onboard Value Booklet.
We always book with the cheaper deposits that we get from booking future cruises while cruising.
Maybe because you book with a larger agency you get them that way.

do these coupons work?
If you fulfill the requirements, they do. For example, I purchase an Internet plan, so the coupon gets me extra minutes. If you purchase the BINGO card, you get the second card.
The thing is that every coupon needs a purchase first.

Not from our TA --- since 9/11 none of the AAA's in our area give any kind of gifts.

Now this doesn't happen on all ships -- but nearly every day on the Ryndam -- for both weeks -- there were all kinds of specials being offered for extra minutes for the Internet - which was great for people who didn't get the coupon book.

Hi,
WE just got off the Zuiderdam on the 24th. Those books were also on our sailing. We however did not have one in our room but both of my sisters did. We just went to the front desk, and they gave us 2 for my husband and I. There were many others in line also getting the books..all the front desk did was ask for your cabin number and mark down that you had received one for the number of pasengers in your cabin. Everyone in line was getting one.. no questions. So I assume it was from HAL itself.. as eveyone was from different places etc and they were just handing them out. I usd a few things.. good if you were going to spend anyway. You could get a free bingo card if you bought one, free souviner glass etc, you also could use the coupon to get a free entry into one of the slot tournements if you already bought one.Fyi.. only the person who bought slot entry already can us the second..ie you can't share it with Dh ec. So.. it was a little helpful.

These books are nothing more than a sales aid to sell on board goods and services. The line does not just leave them laying around in a rack as then more people would recognize them for what they are. Instead they use psychology to make recipients thing that they are "getting something".

I emailed my HAL PCC the other day asking about the coupon book. He said he/they weren't availble to give out but that someone going through a travel agency could get one.
I'd love to have one for my Dec. 23rd Noordam cruise. Is it a HAL generic coupon book good on any one of their ships? If so, if someone had one they weren't using could you get in touch with me? I'd be happy to send a SASE to get it from you before I leave on the 21st of Dec.
I would actually use a few of the coupons for things I am going to be purchasing on the cruise. I do LOVE to spend money on cruise ships! And they see me coming!!! The $55 bottle of body wash on Celebrity one time was the most outlandish thing I have bought.......

Hi, the one thing that looks interesting in the new coupon book is the Pinnacle Grill dinner with purchase of 7 bottle Admiral's wine package. As a 3*** Mariner, we would get 25% off the wine package...does that mean we wouldn't be able to use the Pin Grill coupon?
Anyone run into this? Thanks!!

I'll take the coupon book any day of the week (I rarely get them). we take longer cruises and always order the 7 admiral pack of wine, so a free Pinnacle Grill dinner is just fine with me.
there were a couple of other things I have used in the past. Not really big ticket items, but they were used.
Now if the NA hadn't had noro last cruise, I probably would have tried the spa & thermal pools, but with the pools shut down, I couldn't do it.
Too bad, one didn't know if advance if they were in use for the cruise and could just go get one.
I rarely get the books - in fact my last one was courtesy of a kind cc member on the boards who sent me hers :) now how nice is that :D:D
but although they are coasters to some, they can be of use to others.
If you are going to spend the money anyways, it's nice to get something back - and a free PG dinner is just fine - and no problem at all :)

On my December cruise, I received two coupon books via my travel agent. Now I guess it was a promotion because this was the first HAL cruise that it was offered.

It seems that these coupon booklets are a promo put on by HAL at certain times. Maybe they are based on GAP points, but each time we have had them, there has been advertising about them as part of a sale, usually along with OBC and/or Pinnacle dinners.

Dear KK
GAP means Guest Amenity Points. Apparently when an agency books a group, they get amenities to offer their clients based on points. Lisa would know about this a lot better, but each amenity "costs" so many points.
If you get a copy of the Polar Online booking info, the "GAP" term shows up, for example, GAP Pinnacle Grill Dinner, 2011 GAP 10x7 candid photo sheet.
Since it is my aim in life to book "sales", we get these regularly.
