My wife and I are considering the roundtrip from San Diego to Hawaii in 2012. We've noticed that the VA category cabins are either in the front or the back of the ship. Can anyone tell me about the cabins in the very back of the ship. Are there motion issues? I'd like to hear everything that anyone has to tell me. Thank you.

I was in a VA aft on the Oosterdam this past June on an Alaska cruise. One thing that was a problem was the soot on the balcony. I think the ship burns trash in the incinerator at night and the floor of my balcony would be covered in black "stuff". I'm not sensative to movement, but there was "some" on the night that we had 20 foot seas and 60 MPH winds! Actually what I noticed that night was a lot of metal on metal creaking sounds. Those aft cabins were added to the ship during a drydock and I was hoping that the cabins had been welded on very well!!

I have photos and descriptions/comments about the Oosterdam's Staterooms here from other Cruise Critic members: http://joanjett2000.topcities.com/HAL/Oosterdam/index.html
BTW, the 'soot' would be from the smokestack and the Room stewards will clean it. Normally it will blow straigh out from the ship and not settle on any of the decks. It just depends, I believe on the speed of the ship.

Deck 5 on the Oosterdam (and I think all Vista ships) is completely covered. Look at Joanie's pictures to decide what deck you like. We have stayed on the very stern VA's (i.e. wake views) several times on several different lines and I'll always book when when available. And I always try to get one that is at least half covered so I can use it in either rain or bright sun.
As to movement, I'm not that sensitive to the movement back there but when I do feel a slight rolling, it kind of rocks me to sleep. If there are high seas then yes, you will feel it as opposed to the middle of the ship. There are creeks and squeeks from time to time but that is a sound most ships make - you just may not notice it in the public rooms. In any case, enjoy! We're going to Hawaii too in 2012 :)
