We've been on several HAL cruises and really liked getting the daily eight-page New York Times digest (mostly to check scores and get the crossword puzzle). The last HAL cruise for us was a year ago and we're wondering if any recent HAL cruiser can tell us whether or not the digest is still available. Many thanks.

YES. It is still delivered everyday and placed in every cabin's mailbox. We enjoy that paper daily.

Still had it on our Oct. cruise in Med. Sea. Like the crossword puzzle also!

Not only was it delivered to my cabin, but on my last cruise there was also a supply of them in the Lido at breakfast. That was nice as I could read my paper, even if it hadn't been delivered before I headed out. :)

Another note is there is a separate version delivered for guests from Canada and U.SW. so each get news they would be more interested in.

The problem with the Canadian news is that you don't seem to get it everyday. It also seems to be slanted to the east half of Canada. I was trying to find out who won the race for mayor in Calgary on Oct.18/10 on my recent cruise. There was no information given. Instead they had news about Celine Dion:rolleyes:. They did give the winner of the Toronto and Ottawa elections.

The Times Digest is delivered every morning -- our cabin stewards have had it in the mailbox by 7:20 - 7:30.
For a couple of years now there has been someone going around in the Lido passing out the paper. And in the dining room there is usually a stack of them for you to pick up on.
On some ships there is even a few mplaced in the Explorations Cafe.
DH always does the cross word puzzle every day.

My DH loves the puzzle also. Does it everyday. :)

Thanks for answering, everybody. We've got our pencils sharpened (pencils are recommended for Times puzzles, particularly those from Thursday through Sunday) and eagerly await our 11/23 Zuiderdam cruise. Cheers.

'Lorekauf'--- It's not really news "slanted to Eastern Canada", in my humble opinion it's slanted to Ontario and Quebec!! We Maritimers have the same trouble getting information as you do, and you can't get much farther east than us! ;)
It's the same as our federal elections ----- it realy doesn't matter a damn how any one votes except Quebec and Ontario!! :(
I guess that's just our cross to bare.

On our recent Veendam cruise I noticed U.S., Canadian, Australian and U.K. versions.

Yep, we had them on our cruise in September. I also noticed different versions in the mail boxes of other guests. We liked them too. I loved doing the crossword puzzles, noticed that they start out easy, by the end of the week I could barely get started. LOL

Call me a fanatic, but when considering ships and itineraries, the fact that Holland America still has the New York Times Digest tips the scale in their favor every time. Celebrity had a USA today version, then had it only available in the library, not delivered to your room. RCCL abandoned putting out anything at all. With all the cutbacks the cruise lines seem to be doing, I hope the one thing they don't cut out is the quality of the New York Times Digest, the personal delivery to the cabin and the early timing of delivery so I can glance at it first thing in the morning. I very much enjoyed it on my Maasdam cruise last week. Well done, HAL.

We got them every day on our Noordam trans-Atlantic - but they only showed up in late morning -- an obvious snag given the time difference - especially while still in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic.

The Australian newsheet does not contain the crossword.
